In pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations Agenda 2030, the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and Ethiopia’s own current national development agenda, the Second Five- Year Growth and Transformation Plan 2015/2016-2019/2020 (GTP II), there must be broad-scale commitment across country stakeholders to leave no one behind.

Abstract Descriptive and logit analysis were employed to investigate the impact of social, economic and technical factors on decisions to adopt new agricultural technologies in the Ada and Selale districts of Ethiopia. Peasants follow sequential adoption of technologies. In both study areas, priority is given to adoption of crop production augmenting technologies followed by technologies that complement crop production (Ada) and contribute to increases in milk production (Selale). Producers of both regions require existence of certain pre-conditions prior to the adoption of technologies. Ada farmers require more pre-conditions related to livestock production while Selale farmers require more preconditions related crop production.

    www.ipms-ethiopia.org www.eap.gov.et Working Paper No. 21 Sustainable land management through market-oriented commodity development: Case studies from Ethiopia This working paper series has been established to share knowledge generated through Improving Productivity and Market Success (IPMS) of Ethiopian Farmers project with members of the research and development community in Ethiopia and beyond. IPMS is a five-year project funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and implemented by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) on behalf of the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MoARD). Following the Government of Ethiopia’s rural development and food security strategy, the IPMS project aims at contributing to market-oriented agricultural progress, as a means for achieving improved and sustainable livelihoods for the rural population. The project will contribute to this long-term goal by strengthening the effectiveness of the Government’s efforts to transform agricultural production and productivity, and rural development in Ethiopia. IPMS employs an innovation system approach (ISA) as a guiding principle in its research and development activities. Within the context of a market-oriented agricultural development, this means bringing together the various public and private actors in the agricultural sector including producers, research, extension, education, agri-businesses, and service providers such as input suppliers and credit institutions. The objective is to increase access to relevant knowledge from multiple sources and use it for socio-economic progress. To enable this, the project is building innovative capacity of public and private partners in the process of planning, implementing and monitoring commodity-based research and development programs.

Dairy has been identified as a priority area for the Ethiopian government, which aims to increase Ethiopian milk production at an average annual growth rate of 15.5% during the GTP II period (2015-2020), from 5,304 million litters to 9,418 million litters. This study was carried out to assess determinants of dairy product market participation of the rural households in the case of Adaberga district in West Shewa zone of Oromia national regional state, Ethiopia. The study took a random sample of 120 dairy producer households by using multi-stage sampling procedure and employing a probability proportional to sample size sampling technique. For the individual producer, the decision to participate or not to participate in dairy production was formulated as binary choice probit model to identify factors that determine dairy product market participation.

Introduction Rhamnus prinoides L’Herit, common name dogwood, Amharic name Gesho, family Rhamnaceae, is a widespread plant species in East, Central and South African countries. It is a native plant to Ethiopia, Botswana, Eritrea, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda and exotic to Kenya. It also occurs in Cameroon, Sudan and Angola. The African dogwood, R. prinoides (Rhamnaceae) is a dense shrub or a tree that grows up to 6 m high (Berhanu Abegaz and Teshome Kebede, 1995; Hailemichael Alemu et al., 2007; Afewerk Gebre and Chandravanshi, 2012). Rhamnus prinoides is a shrub or tree to 6 m, unarmed; branchlets sparsely crisped pubescent. Leaves alternate, glabrous but for scattered appressed hairs on midrib; petiole 3-17 mm, sparsely pubescent; stipules falling off quickly; lamina ovate, elliptic or oblong, 3-12.5 x 1.5-4.5 cm, glandular serrulate; apex acuminate to acute; base cuneate to rounded. Flowers yellowish green, solitary or in 2-5flowered axillary fascicles; pedicels 5-15(-20 in fruit) mm, sparsely pubescent, drooping in fruit. Receptacle puberulous. Sepals 5, acute, 2 mm long; petals usually absent or 1 mm long; filaments 1 mm; ovary 3(-4)-locular, style 1 mm. Fruit subglobose, 5-8 mm in diameter, turning through red to blackish purple; stones obconic (Hedberg and Edwards, 1989). Rhamnus is found in upland forest (usually on edges or in clearings and former cultivations), riverine forest, secondary forest and scrub, also widely planted in hedges and gardens (Hedberg and Edwards, 1989).

As a result, they have long established their capacity for adaptation. However, in recent years, changes in their environments from increased frequency of drought, land fragmentation and natural resource degradation have undermined their adaptive strategies increasing their vulnerability. Trends point to a pattern of climatic hazards more frequently turning to disasters. One option for pastoralist and agro pastoralists to build on their adaptive capacity and resiliency is closely related to their skills on managing their natural resources.
