And God said, “I pardon you, as you have asked.” (Numbers 14:19)

A story is told about Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditzev (1740-1809). One year, a few days before Yom Kippur, he was standing in his study, gazing out the window. He saw an itinerant handyman walking up the street carrying his bag of tools looking for work and shouting, “Who has something in need of repair? Who has something that needs fixing?” At that moment, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak fell to the floor and cried out, “Oy! Woe is me! And woeful is my soul! The Day of Judgment is upon me and I still have not repaired myself!” Broken vows. Broken relationships. A broken world. Sometimes it feels like there is brokenness all around us. Now is the time for repair, for tikkun. For the Jewish mystics, known as the Kabbalists, prayer is the beginning of tikkun. We reflect on the person we wish to be, the world we wish to inhabit, and then we humbly ask for God’s help on our journey. Tikkun happens, and our world is made a bit more whole, when we turn our prayers into action and we make t'shuvah, true repentance, by changing our behavior. The Day of Judgment is upon us. May our worship, our study, our mindful reflection, and our communal involvement inspire us to be better, more loving, more giving, kinder people worthy of forgiveness. May we commit ourselves to becoming m’taknei olam b’malchut Shadai—God’s partners in the repair of the brokenness in ourselves and our world.

Judaism encourages us to reach out to God in prayer at any time, in any place. And yet on Yom Kippur, our tradition teaches that God is especially near, reaching out to us, waiting to hear our prayers. What a beautiful image, as God judges our actions and, we hope, inscribes and seals us in the Book of Life; God is close, listening and waiting for our prayers. Our machzor helps us to reflect upon the year gone by in order to realize the central goal of Yom Kippur: repentance. And yet we can also look forward. On Yom Kippur, let us ask ourselves: this year do I want to be more charitable and more honest in my business dealings? Do I wish to gossip less? Do I want to be more observant of or the kosher laws? Do I hope to be kinder and more loving or to use my time more thoughtfully? Do I hope for moral courage to speak out? How might I be a better parent, sibling, child, and friend? We commit ourselves to the work necessary to become that person. We pray that God will walk alongside us throughout this journey. We pray with gratitude for the gifts God has given us. We are thankful for the blessings that fill our lives. And with great humility, we turn to God. With optimism and hope, we ask to be inscribed and sealed in the Book of Life for the coming year as we travel, on this holiest of days, toward our loving God.

In their retelling of the Exodus story, the ancient rabbis imagined the Sea of Reeds raging before the fleeing Israelites; it was an impassable barrier blocking their route to liberation. As they stood trembling before the menacing waters, the armies of Pharaoh approached, threatening to carry them back to captivity. Trapped, they turned to Moses in panic, their taste of freedom suddenly seemed alarmingly fleeting. In the midst of the pandemonium, a certain man named Nachshon ben Aminadav came forward and took a first determined step into the water. It reached his knees—he kept going. It reached his waist—he continued forward. As his head disappeared beneath the waves the onlookers turned away, resigned to their impending fate. Suddenly, a deafening crash of waves drew their attention from the looming Egyptian troops to the water once again. And there with a look of determination in his eyes was Nachshon standing on dry ground, leading the way across the sea. Sometimes we must take the first steps into the cold waters to open up the path to the future that we seek. How many times in our own lives have we found ourselves up against the sea? Unable to take those first tentative steps forward into the fearsome unknown. We cannot return from whence we came, but the path ahead is unclear, a bit threatening, filled with the unpredictable. The story of the Israelites up against the sea is both our national story and our personal story. Today, now, this year, let us take the first steps so we might cross the sea that lies between what we are and what we might become.

For the Yom Kippur that Falls on the Sabbath Day Since the beginning of Jewish tradition, our ancestors held fast to a belief that time can be sacred, that we can wring from our hectic lives a day in which industry and occupation cease to have meaning. Observe the Sabbath day and keep it holy... Six days shall you work and perform all your labors, but the seventh day is a Sabbath for Adonai your God. The Sabbath acknowledges our sacred responsibilities, to God and to one another. You shall perform no labor—neither you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your servant, nor your livestock, nor the stranger that lives among you, so that your workers may rest, just as you do. Today, we bring deeper meaning to the Sabbath, making this sacred hour an opportunity to cleanse the mind, to purify the soul, and to hold fast to one another. This shall be to you a law for all time: In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your soul. You shall do no manner of work, neither the citizen nor the stranger among you. Thus do we exalt this precious gift, this day of rest, this day of atonement. Our God and God of our ancestors, bless us with the threefold blessing as it is written in the Torah for Your holy People:

May God bless you and keep you. May it be so. May God cause God’s light to shine upon you and be gracious unto you. May it be so. May God favor you and give you peace. (Numbers 6:24-26) May it be so.

What will it sound like? Utter silence or the clash of swords becoming plowshares? What will it look like? A clear, blue, sunny day or the smoky aftermath of something big? What will it taste like? The sweetness of a summer fruit or the bitter taste of loss and grief? What will it smell like? A fresh ocean breeze or charred wood and ashes? What will it feel like? Safe and secure, swaddled in the arms of someone you love, or cold and alone, unsure of what’s next? But until we know it, until we hear it, see it, taste it, smell it, feel it, we must speak it. AHAVNU Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook (1865–1935) was the first Ashkenazi chief rabbi of pre-State Israel. He taught that, on Yom Kippur, one should not only confess the bad that one has done but acknowledge the good as well. According to Kook, “there is great benefit to repairing the soul…through the confession of mitzvot in order to gladden one’s heart and to strengthen the ways of life in the path of God.” Celebrating our best impulses then gives us the positive reinforcement we might need in order to continue that behavior. *****

As the sun begins to set, we lift our hearts toward the New Year. In celebration of who we were, and in anticipation of who we might yet become, together we honor our best selves. For the good that we have done, We have advised with wisdom and patience, blessed, comforted the mourners, and danced at weddings. Wouldn’t most everyone prefer life יְל ֹזַּה ָחְצִ תא֔ ק֖ ָלָאָה־תֶאְו יְלוּ ֹקֲﬠַ ׃בֽ ה֖ 13 ֹזַּהְ ׃תאֽ ו ֥לֹא ִ א ְתּ ֶ ֖כ יִכּם ֩ ְל ֶשֲׁא־תֶא ַב ְדּ ֶ ֑כ ר֨ ם ָא ֹ נ נְשֶׁ ֗יִכי וֹ֜ ֹכּ ֵ ר ה֗ ֹפּ֙ת ֶא ָמִּﬠת וּנ֙ ־ ֙ ַה ְבִּ ֣ מֹע ֵ ר ד֣ ית to death, blessing יַּה םוֹ֔ פִל נְ ֵ י֖ והי ה֣ הAֱא ֵ וּני֑ ֵאְ ו ת֨ ֶשֲׁא ר֥ ניֵא ֶ ֛ נּ וּ ה֖ ֹ פּ מִּ ﬠ ָ ֥ נ וּ ַ ה ֽ יּ ׃םוֹ 15 ִ כּ ־י to curse? Here is his ֹזַּה תא֔ ָלָאָה־תֶאְו ה֖ ֹזַּה ׃תאֽ 14 יִכּ ֩ ֶשֲׁא־תֶא ר֨ נְשֶׁ י וֹ֜ ה֗ ֹפּ ָמִּﬠ וּנ֙ ֙ מֹע ֵ ד֣ ד֣ ֵ מֹע ֙ וּנ֙ ָמִּﬠ ה֗ ֹפּ וֹ֜ נְשֶׁ י ר֨ ֶשֲׁא־תֶא ֩ יִכּ insight: There are יַּה םֶ֣תַּא םוֹ֔ םֶ֔תְּﬠַדְי פִל נְ ֵ י֖ והי ה֣ תֵ֥א הAֱא וּנְבַ֖שָׁי־רֶשֲׁא ֵ וּני֑ ֵאְ ו ת֨ ֶשֲׁא ץֶרֶ֣אְבּ ר֥ ניֵא ֶ ֛ םִיָ֑רְצִמ נּ וּ ה֖ ֹ פּ תֵ֧אְו מִּ ﬠ ָ ֥ נ וּ וּנְרַ֛בָﬠ־רֶשֲׁא ַ ה ֽ יּ ׃םוֹ 15 ִ כּ ־י וּנְרַ֛בָﬠ־רֶשֲׁא תֵ֧אְו םִיָ֑רְצִמ ץֶרֶ֣אְבּ וּנְבַ֖שָׁי־רֶשֲׁא תֵ֥א םֶ֔תְּﬠַדְי םֶ֣תַּא two ways to “choose

life.” The first way בֶרֶ֥קְבּ םֶ֣תַּא םֶ֔תְּﬠַדְי םִ֖יוֹגַּה תֵ֥א רֶ֥שֲׁא וּנְבַ֖שָׁי־רֶשֲׁא ׃םֶֽתְּרַבֲﬠ ץֶרֶ֣אְבּ םִיָ֑רְצִמ תֵ֧אְו וּנְרַ֛בָﬠ־רֶשֲׁא וּנְרַ֛בָﬠ־רֶשֲׁא תֵ֧אְו םִיָ֑רְצִמ ץֶרֶ֣אְבּ וּנְבַ֖שָׁי־רֶשֲׁא תֵ֥א םֶ֔תְּﬠַדְי םֶ֣תַּא is the “I” way. If we want, we can choose בֶרֶ֥קְבּ םִ֖יוֹגַּה רֶ֥שֲׁא ׃םֶֽתְּרַבֲﬠ to think of ourselves 11 י֚ ִכּ מַּה וְצִ ָ ה֣ ֹזַּה תא֔ ֶשֲׁא ר֛ נָא כֹ ִ י֥ וַּצְ מ Sְ ֖ יַּה םוֹ֑ נ־אֹל פִ לְ ֵ תא֥ ִה ֙או Sְ֔מִּמ Sְ֔מִּמ ֙או (DEUTERONOMY 30:11-20) first. We can worry 12 about our needs and ְו 11֥לֹ י֚ אִכּ ְ ר ֹ מַּהח ָ וְצִ ֖קה ָ ה֣ ִֽה ו ֹזַּהא תא֔ ׃ ֥ ֶשֲׁאלֹ ר֛ א ַ ב ָ נָאשּׁ כֹ ַ ִ ֖ י֥ מ ִי ם וַּצְ מִ ֑ה Sְ ו ֖ א ֵל יַּה םוֹ֑ א ֹ֗מ ר נ־אֹלִ ֣מי פִ ַי לְ ֲﬠ ֵ תא֥ ֶלה־ ָ ֤ לּנ ִהוּ ֙או Sְ֔מִּמ Sְ֔מִּמ ֙או our desires and our 13 wishes, and only later ְו ַמָשַּׁה֥לֹא י֙ ְ ֙הָמְ ר ֹח ָ ֖ק יְ וה חָקִּ ִֽה ֶ ו ָה֣ א׃ וּנ֔ ָלּ12 יְ ֥ולֹ ֵﬠִמְשַׁ א
