CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

The past twelve months have seen the Canterbury Hockey Association moving in a positive direction. This positive direction is reflected in both on field (turf) and off field successes.

The on field successes are typified by the magnificent performance of all the representative teams. This has come about due to the tremendous efforts of the coaches, managers, players and supporters. On behalf of the Association I would like to thank you for your efforts.

However, without the financial, administrative and coaching support provided by the Association’s permanent employees this success would not have occurred.

I would like to thank Greg Clark for stepping in to the position of acting Development Manager at relatively short notice. Greg has now been confirmed as the Development Manager. Throughout the year Greg has undertaken all of his tasks in a thoroughly professional manner. His knowledge and experience has made a huge contribution to the performance of all the representative teams and the development of players. Thank you to Greg.

The Association’s contribution to the funding of these teams has been substantial. Once again the Association has managed to further reduce the players’ cost of representing Canterbury. This could not have been achieved without the dedication and hard work of our Sponsorship Manager Michele Wattez. Michele’s acute ongoing understanding and knowledge in this area has been invaluable. Thank you to Michele.

The administrative assistance provided by Margaret Huckstep and Lyndsey Leask has ensured that things have run smoothly. Both Margaret and Lyndsey have spent countless hours to ensure that all administrative matters are dealt with in an efficient and timely manner. Thank you to Margaret and Lyndsey.

Without good leadership an organisation such as ours would, in spite of the best efforts of the staff, flounder. Derek Torkington has now completed his first year as CEO. Notwithstanding that Derek had little background in hockey he has done a tremendous job in providing leadership of the Association. His tireless efforts have not gone unnoticed. The Association is very fortunate to have Derek Torkington leading it. Thank you to Derek for all your efforts.

The off field successes include the high level of maintenance of the facilities, a new turf at Nunweek Park and the completion of Stage one of the upgrade to the Grandstand at Porritt Park.

Without the leadership provided by Peter Seymour the Association’s facilities would not be maintained at the present high level. Thank you for your efforts Peter. Peter has been ably supported by Bill Lynn and Bevan Fergusson who have worked long hours to ensure that our facilities are maintained at the highest possible standard. Thank you to Bill and Bevan.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT The next twelve months look very exciting with the proposed replacement of the No 1 turf at Porritt Park due to be completed before the start of the 2005 season and the building of new Association offices at the northern end of the grandstand.

Thank you to my fellow Board members who have provided me with a huge amount of support and encouragement; not only over the past twelve months, but also for the four years I have been on the Board.

As I step down from the Board I would like to take this opportunity to wish the Association all the best for the future.

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT C.E.O. REPORT

After the previous difficult year we are pleased to see that Canterbury Hockey is now in a sound financial position, due mainly to the strong support we receive from the funding agencies.

The Board has continued to show strong commitment to Canterbury Hockey and without their valuable support my job would have been considerably harder. Canterbury Hockey has a dedicated group of Board members led by Jeff Goldstein and this has shown in the way that the Board has operated successfully during the year.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank the members of the Finance Committee under the Chairmanship of Graeme Paterson and the valuable work from Paul Duggan & Associates, our accountants, who have given many hours outside of their brief to Canterbury Hockey.

Under the Chairmanship of Jeff Goldstein, the Executive Committee has met monthly to discuss any urgent business and the time given has been appreciated as with other Board members

During the year we had a stable staff and with the addition of Greg Clark taking over the Development Manager’s role after Lincoln Churchill resigned to work in Hong Kong, this has enabled us to work through the season with few problems. The staff at Canterbury Hockey have continued to work long hours and both the Board and myself appreciate the extra hours that are put in outside of their job descriptions.

On the representative side, over the whole season, Canterbury was the top province nationally. Four National titles were won, more than any other Association and Canterbury was represented in more tournaments throughout the year. It is a credit to the coaches, managers and the many volunteers who help in this area that Canterbury has continued to be one of the leading provinces.

This year a new Competitions programme was put in place with varying degrees of success. This will be built on for the following season with the continuing development to strengthen Canterbury Hockey.

It has been a very busy year for Canterbury Hockey. During the year we have replaced the turf at Nunweek Park and are currently looking at how we will finance and replace the No. 1 turf at Porritt Park. This turf has been a continual problem with flooding and gradual wear and tear. It has now been down ten years and needs replacing.

Currently we are looking at building new offices; the present space is inadequate for the size of the business and this project is also underway with new offices being completed in the 2005 year.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT SPONSORSHIP & MARKETING REPORT

Grants from Charitable & Gaming Machine Trusts To host tournaments, send representative teams away to compete in their national competitions, provide players with equipment, uniforms and facilities costs many thousands of dollars. It is highly unlikely that our Association, or members, would be able to achieve all of this without the high level of funding received from Charitable Trusts and Gaming Machine Trusts. Canterbury Hockey would like to express their sincere gratitude to all those who have generously provided financial assistance, through various forms of funding, in particular The; Community Trust, The Canterbury Foundation, The Scottwood Group, NZ Community Trust, Lion Foundation, The Southern Trust and Pub Charity.

Corporate Sponsorship This year there has been a huge increase in organisations taking advantage of the exposure received from having signage at Porritt & Nunweek Parks, this remains to be a very cost effective form of branding. Canterbury Hockey’s updated website is also proving to be a good form of exposure for businesses associated with our sport. There are many other areas, and levels, in which Corporate Sponsors are able to support Canterbury Hockey; this includes Naming Rights to teams, competitions & facilities and the provision of product & services. It is my aim that every Sponsorship Partnership is tailored to meet the individual needs of that organisation, therefore, both parties having benefits from the association. I would like to thank those who have continued to sponsor us during 2004 and welcome on board all new sponsors. In addition to this, I would like to recognise the organisations who are Canterbury’s 2004 naming right sponsors;

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT Fundraising Events This year Canterbury Hockey focused on two main fundraising events, both of which were a tremendous success!

Golf Tournament at the Waitikiri Golf Club The weather could not have been better and the food and beverages supplied on course by 92 More FM, Lion Breweries and Coca Cola went down very well with all the players. Prize giving, raffles and nibbles were held in the club house.

It was a full field with every player receiving a prize, and the members of the winning team, Cue Time, received Scenic Circle Hotel B & B and Meal Vouchers plus Montana Wine (valued at over $300 pp).

The success of this tournament was due to the generosity and support of many of Canterbury Hockey’s sponsors, and, of course, all those who entered teams in this tournament.

Special thanks goes to: The Canterbury Foundation, the Christchurch Casino, Scenic Circle Hotels, 92 More FM, Red Badge Security, Anthony Harper Lawyers, Rainbow Print, Arrow International, Air New Zealand, AMI Insurance, Elmswood Court Retirement Village, Lion Breweries, Coca Cola, AMP Argent, Vic & Whale Restaurant plus Alan Paterson & his HSOB/Burnside team, who marked the cards and, of course, the staff at Waitikiri Golf Club.

Christchurch Casino Celebrity Dinner and Auction This dinner raised approximately $12,000, an outcome which would not have been achieved without the support of many, however, in particular I would like to express our gratitude to our Celebrity Guest Speaker Don Tricker, Coach of the Black Sox, whose speech was well received by all, to Malcolm Ellis - MC, to Bryan Andrews - Auctioneer and to Arthur Pitcher & Aaron Flynn from the Christchurch Casino. In addition to this, I would like to recognise those who very generously donated auction items and purchased tables for this dinner; Action Signs, AMI Insurance, HSOB/Burnside Hockey Club, Just Hockey, NZ Academy of Sport, Burnside High School, Canterbury Hockey Supporters, Harewood Hockey Club, Cavell Leitch Pringle & Boyle, Air New Zealand, Canterbury Hockey Association Board Members, Terrace Downs Golf Resort, National Car Rentals, Scenic Circle Hotels, Hanmer Springs Thermal Reserve, The Court Theatre, Kevin Clarke Photography.

Media & Publicity 2004 was a busy year for Canterbury Hockey, in terms of hosting Tournaments. It began with two tests in the International Series between NZ Women Black Sticks and the Indian Women, followed by the Rankin Cup Secondary School Girls Tournament, then the Collier Girls Primary Tournament and finally 3 home games in the Lion Foundation NZ Hockey League.

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT It is Canterbury Hockey’s aim to raise the profile of hockey and promote events in Canterbury as much as possible. We achieved this in 2004 by way of commercials on radio & television, interviews throughout the season on CTV, the filming of some games, photographic coverage at tournaments, regular weekend competition up dates to Newstalk ZB and advertisements in newspapers.

Canterbury Hockey also distributes weekly media releases and uses e-mail, newsletters and the website as mediums to list draws, promote events, competitions, and the likes. In particular, I would like to express our gratitude for the support provided by the following local media, their expertise and extensive coverage of our sport has assisted greatly in increasing public awareness of hockey in Canterbury: -

• 92 More FM, for their ticket promotions, commercials, sausage sizzles & live cross overs during games. • Kevin Clarke Photography, Canterbury Hockey’s Official Photographer. • Newstalk ZB & Radio Sport for their competition coverage, commercials, ticket promotions and player interviews. • CTV who filmed games, provided commercials, news coverage and interviews on Pete Smith’s Sports Show & the Good Living Show. • The Press & Kevin Tutty for his regular hockey articles during the season. • The Christchurch Star whose editorials have assisted in promoting our events; to Nick Tolerton for his coverage of hockey.

In my opinion, Canterbury Hockey’s 2004 Season would not have been such a great success without the contribution from all the aforementioned, however, it is essential to realise that non financial contribution from volunteers, coaches & managers also plays a large part in the success too.

Thank you to everyone who has given their support!

Michele Wattez Sponsorship & Marketing Manager

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT COMPETITIONS REPORT

This is my last report as Competitions Committee chairman of Canterbury Hockey, and I feel that we the committee, have left the competitions structure in place for the future benefit of Canterbury Hockey.

During the 2003 season the committee viewed the current competition, and set about revamping the structure of the top 2 grades. With this achieved, the CHA Board was informed and with their blessing, the new structure was put to all hockey clubs at the end of the season, with all clubs and schools embracing the new structure.

The 2004 season started early for both men and women in the Canterbury Premier League (CPL) and Premier Reserve grades. At the end of one full round for both grades, teams were graded into CPL, Premier Reserve (A), and Premier Reserve (B), with the bottom team of Premier Reserve dropping into the First Grade. This new structure gave all club/school teams very even, or close games for the latter half of the season, thus producing a very close championship finish. This new structure allowed, for the first time, school teams to compete in the women’s CPL. St Margarets stayed in the CPL for the full season and went on to win the premier Federation Cup Schoolgirls hockey tournament for 2004. The other major departure was to withdraw from the SHL, allowing the Competitions Committee to introduce a knockout championship to cater for all the grades where applicable, and this was well received.

During the season the Competitions Committee was advised that the sport was loosing umpires from the sport, and a more hands on approach from the umpires was suggested. This not only arrested the decline of umpire numbers, but also improved the players’ attitude, and play, which at this point of time, has transferred to the Cavaliers and the Cats who are both at the top of the NHL.

The mid season meeting with the clubs was well attended by all, with the clubs and schools providing positive feedback to the committee for the future. The other positive was the setting up of a focus group to look at the future direction of hockey and how to make the sport stronger as well as lifting the standard of play.

I would like to thank the office, Derek, and staff, Margaret and Michele, as well as Facilities staff, Peter Seymour and team at both Porritt and Nunweek, for the support that was given during the year, making the competitions run that much more smoothly. It would not be Hockey without thanking Lindsey Leask, for again giving the countless hours that go unnoticed by the hockey fraternity on the draw. Also to the CHA Board for your support during the season.

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT Finally to the rest of the Competitions Committee of : Bev Savage, Lin Thompson, John Schoeman, Mike McIlroy, Greg Clarke (DM), Mark Rippon, Peter Seymour, Murray Chesterman, and Chris Edwards. Thank you for the support and wise counsel on issues that arose during the season.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT PARKHOUSE LANDSCAPE GRASS HOCKEY

This season started on 17 April with the format as it has been for the last few seasons. There were seven teams in the Women’s Grade and six in the Men’s, so there were slight adjustments for both grades to finish on the same day.

Because of the weather the season was extended after the split round so the semis and finals could be fair for all teams.

As I was unable to attend the Finals’ Day I was finding it difficult to do a report. I was fortunate enough to have a reporter attending the games. Thank you to the reporter for this. Extra time was needed by Harewood when they found themselves locked one a piece with Hinemoa/Kaiapoi at the end of normal time in the final of the Women’s Grade. Harewood required 4 minutes of extra time before becoming the 2004 titleholders. The playoff for 3rd and 4th between Avon and Hornby went to penalty strokes with Avon winning. Sydenham and Selwyn played off for 5th and 6th with Sydenham taking 5th position. Otautahi was 7th

In the Men’s Grade Old Boys and Selwyn Green had met on three occasions this season with mixed results. It was a high scoring game with Selwyn Green scoring six goals to Old Boys five. That slender goal scoring superiority was reflected in the evenly contested match with Selwyn/ Green securing the victory. Avon and Selwyn/Blue drew their match for 3rd and 4th with the scores locked at 1-1. These boys chose to leave the score as a draw and not play it out. The playoff for 5th and 6th was a great game while Hinemoa/Kaiapoi overcame Harewood 3-2, and it was the afternoon tea provided by Hinemoa ladies that drew the most appreciation.

The finals were played at Nunweek Park in balmy conditions on well prepared fields with continual food and refreshments arranged by John Turner and the Hornby girls. Thank you to Harewood for the use of your grounds and Club rooms and thank you to Hornby for arranging the Finals’ Day. I hope another Club will take a turn next season.

Thank you to Ann Harper for being available as Grade Manager. Sorry you missed the Finals’ Day.

Mike McElroy has done a great job with the draw again this season. There may be someone out there who would like to help Mike next season.

Thanks to all the players, coaches and umpires who continue to support Grass Grade Hockey. You are a great group to work with.

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT I have enjoyed being involved with Grass Hockey over the years but I believe it is time for a change so this will be my last year as Board Representative. All the best to you in the coming seasons.

Finally, thank you to Parkhouse Landscape and Garden Supplies who continue to support our sport.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT FACILITIES

NUNWEEK PARK

The Turf Earlier this year, a new wet/dry turf was laid down on top of the existing old turf and has been well received by players and staff. The final levelling has yet to be completed; this should be cleaned up over the summer period ready for the 2005 season.

The Lux levels of lighting at the Park are of concern with 14 lamps having 3500 hours of use, which is somewhat more than the recommended time span; these lamps will hopefully be replaced early in 2005.

The Grounds Thanks to Bill Lynn, the Park looks great with the trees growing well and grassed areas looking healthy. Some fencing damaged during the year will be replaced over the summer as will the boards on the goals which are in a sad state of repair.

Staffing Bill is employed for 30 hours per week, but is on site many hours over this paid time. Nunweek continues to have heavy usage during the winter, which requires my time on site as well at times each week. The summer months are also busy with Summer Hockey on Mondays and Tuesdays (90 teams), Secondary School games on Wednesdays, and Masters on Thursdays, as well as repairs and maintenance for the next season.

The Shop Canteen facilities continue to be well patronised, proceeds from these sales are used for tangible assets at Nunweek Park. During the year $20,000 was granted for turf development and $10,000 towards a ride-on cleaning machine for both parks.

The Future Nunweek Park will always be an integral part of Canterbury Hockey; with the new turf, buildings in good order and grounds in fine shape, 2005 looks good. With Bill’s expertise on deck during 2005, it should be a good year.

PORRITT PARK

The Turfs The new turf continues to have problems with wobbly lines, seams coming adrift and surface bubbles. Astrograss have repaired some areas a few times this year and are due back down during November. The turf is so well used it is hard to find time to dry it out so that maintenance can be undertaken. Once again it is envisaged that the turfs will be closed for casual use on Fridays to allow machinery on the turf for cleaning.

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT The old turf is past its ‘use by’ date, causing some concern with excess water not draining away. Staff and volunteers spent many hours cleaning mud and grime from the turf during the year, it is hoped that the turf can be replaced in the not-too-distant future.

Fencing will be repaired or replaced over the summer and a staining and painting programme put in place.

The Grounds The grounds are looking fine with planting well underway; pathways require some T.L.C. but are OK for now. It is hoped that the sealed area on the eastern side of the new turf will be in place shortly and this will provide a warm-up area with 3 walls for ball-hitting etc.

The Stage 1 lights on No. 2 ground will require changing next year otherwise the lux levels will drop down. The Stage 2 lights on No. 1 will also require changing next year for the same reason; these will be in the budget for 2005.

The Buildings The new lounge development was a serious dust, noise and water problem for almost 12 months causing staff to constantly clean the ground floor areas on a daily basis; but it was worth all this with a resulting lounge area, which is well used.

We now have an upmarket relaxation and viewing area with a very fine kitchen. Now we have to find a group who are able to operate a canteen, bar and food area. Checking with Dunedin, they have tried individuals and private enterprise, and have finally settled on a club who are operating very successfully, or maybe the Supporters Club may be in a position to take it on.

Staffing Bevan Fergusson, has proved his worth with his skills at maintenance/repairs around the park, fixing locks, gates, water taps, turf and machinery throughout the year.

Staff looked after the requirements for the New Zealand Women’s Squad training camp prior to the Olympics, which was substantial, together with the visiting overseas teams.

Bevan recently organised and supervised the new bank planting up the driveway by the ramp.

The Shop The mobile café was a new innovation this year, but once again not very well patronised by park users; a small canteen was set up in the old shop, which was open when the mobile shop was not on site.

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT The Future Once the replacement turf for No. 1 is financed and laid, and then the Stage 2 of the grandstand development completed, we will have a very pleasant facility at Porritt Park. The proposed closure of the current grassed area for car parking will be offset by increased parking lanes down Hockey Lane behind No. 1 turf; this proposal is now being looked at by Christchurch City Council and hopefully will come to fruition next year.

We, the Staff, Peter, Bevan and Bill, look forward to 2005 with anticipation and enthusiasm.

Peter Seymour Facilities Manager

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT COACHING AND DEVELOPMENT REPORT

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES

Scottwood Trust Pathway Squads Once again the pathway squads at the beginning of the year conflicted with summer sports commitments. Unfortunately this situation cannot be avoided due to the position of the representative tournaments.

Despite this we had in excess of 60 underage players complete the 6-week trainings that focused on the basic skills. The improvement shown in the technique of a lot of the players so early in the season was a real positive.

Goalkeepers were also included with this group, as opposed to having a separate goalkeeping academy, and they benefited from the coaching provided by Jonathan McAleese and Linda Bezema as well as having plenty of field players to hit balls at them.

Coaching This year the standard or representative coaching has been excellent with qualified coaches being in charge of most under age teams. Mark Beatson did a great job earlier on in the year working with the junior coaches taking them through how to teach the basic skills with a lot of coaches going through that program

Pre-Christmas Development Squad Once again the opportunity for players who have not had a chance to represent Canterbury throughout the year to participate in an end of year squad has been well received with a great number of players attending. It gives these players on the fringe the chance to access some good quality coaching and improve their skill base.

Greg Clark Acting Development Manager

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT 2004 REPRESENTATIVE REPORT

Overall the representative season was excellent with great results from primary through to Senior.

Scenic Circle Hotel Canterbury Cavaliers The Cavaliers have, on the whole, played some pretty exciting hockey and can be very proud of what they achieved during the course of their season. Overall the team is very young and to see how they performed and progressed over the course of the year bodes well for the future of Canterbury Hockey.

Taeke Taekema has had a huge influence on the team, both on and off the field and his penalty corner expertise, the way he plays the game, taught a lot to our players.

Once again the management team of Andrew Hastie and Chris Maister was instrumental in the team’s success and solid performances throughout the season.

Results vs Southern 9 – 1 Win vs Northland 10 – 2 Win vs Central 5 – 1 Win vs Wellington 2 – 0 Win vs Auckland 5 – 3 Win vs North Harbour 1 – 7 Loss vs Midland 6 – 1 Win

Semi Finals vs Wellington 3-2 Win (Extra Time) Final vs North Harbour 1 – 5 Loss

Canterbury Cats The Cats continued to improve with each game and played some good hockey that was shown by the fact they were placed first going into the finals and had not been beaten.

Unfortunately, in the semi final they suffered their first loss of the year against a very good Central team.

The impact the Olympics had on the build up was considerable. For the team to be without both coaches for a majority of the campaign was a major handicap and in addition to this, the disruption in having some key players away at the same time is a major disruption to the cause.

But again we have a nucleus of some very young players, with seven new caps in the side, and the future is looking good for this team.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT Results vs Southern 2 – 1 Win vs Northland 2 – 1 Win vs Central 1 – 0 Win vs Wellington 2 – 2 Draw vs North Harbour 4 – 4 Draw vs Midland 5 - 1 Win

Semi Finals vs Central 2 – 3 Loss vs (3rd & 4th) North Harbour 3 – 1 Win

Meridian Energy Senior B Men and Women The Senior B men played some very impressive hockey in their week away at National tournament. Unfortunately with this team, along with the women, they had a very disruptive build up.

Both teams were affected by the unavailability of players due to the fact that many players were unsure whether they would be picked up on the draft by NZHL teams or whether they would be available to play. This was compounded by the fact that the cut off for naming the NHL teams is 1 September and the tournament starts on 20 September, not conducive to a stable build up.

Lion Breweries Under 21 The men completed their season with a comprehensive win in their tournament, beating Northern 4 – 2 in the final. The team was undefeated throughout the week and on their way to the final scored 33 goals and only conceded 8, by far the best performance at the tournament.

The women had mixed results at what was a very close tournament. Their 4th placing belies the fact that but for a single goal earlier at the tournament they would have been in the final.

These tournaments are the toughest on the representative calendar, both mentally and physically and to perform so well is a credit to both teams.

Under 18 The men had an excellent tournament culminating in a 4 – 2 win over Auckland in the final. This team was well coached and managed and the team responded well to the environment that was created.

The women’s team again performed well in finishing third in an extremely close competition.

Coca Cola Under 15 The U15A Boys had a very tough competition and they eventually finished 5th, after losing a tough battle against Manawatu in the quarterfinals. They performed extremely well in a tough competition. There are some extremely good players at this level and the future is bright at this level. ______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT The Under15B Boys stepped up to the mark and convincingly won their tournament 2 – 0 over Auckland in the final. This team improved with every game they played, and apart from a 0 – 1 loss to Wellington in a meaningless pool game, no team got close to them through out the week.

The Under 15A Girls narrowly lost to Northland in the final 4 – 5 in a very tight match. This is the second year in a row that Northland has pipped Canterbury but all credit to the team who never gave up.

The Under 15B Girls finished 3rd in their tournament, which again is a creditable performance.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT TOURNAMENTS

Canterbury hosted two national tournaments in 2004, along with two women’s international series. Canterbury also hosted the New Zealand women’s national training squad from January to March

August 2004 saw the hosting of the Federation Cup Tournament. A small group of representatives from the host schools put together a very successful tournament even though it was one of the coldest weeks of the year. Some far north teams had not played in snow flurries and it was a novelty for them. Despite the cold conditions, only one game was cancelled on the final day. St Margaret’s College were worthy winners and well supported by a home crowd. New Zealand Institute of Sport students acted as tournament controllers during the week. This provided the students with a practical hands on opportunity at event management

In September, the Collier Trophy tournament was played at Porritt Park. This well organised tournament was also dogged with cold weather. However this did not deter the competing twenty six teams and supporters from an enjoyable week. The Canterbury A Girl’s team took out the title giving both tournaments home winners.

Nunweek Park had a successful secondary schools tournament running the same week as Federation Cup and this tournament continues to provide competition for those schools not travelling to other NZHF secondary tournaments.

With the New Zealand women basing their squad in Christchurch prior to the Olympic Qualifying tournament, this provided an opportunity for local players to watch the New Zealand women train. The Japanese women’s team travelled for a weeks training and games against the New Zealand women prior to the OQT.

In May, the New Zealand women played two tests against the Indian women. Thank you to the local Indian community who assisted the team during their stay and to Gita Patel who acted as the liaison person.

In 2005 Canterbury will host the U15 Boys National Tournament and Marie Fry Tournament.

Junior Management Committee Initiatives The Management Committee embarked on implementing a number of initiatives this season. 1 An extensive elite player coaching programme was developed and introduced through March and April by the Coaching and Development Committee, and the better results from our representative teams reflected the benefits of this programme.

2 An introductory coaching course for 8 Aside Coaches was introduced, again by the Coaching and Development Committee. This proved a popular and beneficial initiative.

3 The Board authorised the Junior Management Committee to take over the administration and development of Junior Umpires. The Umpiring Committee headed by Marilyn Downward oversaw the initial implementation of this, working closely with the Canterbury Umpires Council. The completion of the implementation phase of the programme will extend into the 2005 season.

Tournaments: Collier Trophy The Junior Management Committee was given the responsibility of providing the organisational and administrative effort for this year’s Collier Trophy Tournament. An enormous amount of work goes into organising a Tournament of this size, and thanks go to the organising Committee - Keith Moorfield (Chairperson), Jane Brown, Megan Hayward, Julia Perry, Sharon Grant, and Rosie Linterman for their efforts. The Tournament was very successful and particularly well received by the 25 visiting teams.

Super Six This annual event again proved popular and successful. The organisation and administration of this tournament was given to four senior High School students - Joan Downward, Sophie Fitzsimons, Anna Broms, and Te Paia McGregor. My thanks go to them for their efforts.

The Boys’ Tournament was won by Harewood Red with Medbury School second. The Girls’ Tournament was won by Carlton Redcliffs, with St Josephs second.

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT Finances The Junior Management Committee operated within the budgeted expenditure, and revenues matched expectation. Through various grants and budgeted funds the Management Committee was able to start on a programme of replacing the representative teams uniforms and equipment.

Acknowledgements The enormous workload taken on by Malcolm Long, administering the entire competition programme, was greatly appreciated, and I extend to Malcolm on behalf of the Junior Management Committee my sincere thanks.

Marilyn Downward’s effort in starting implementing the Junior Umpiring Programme is also greatly appreciated by the Committee.

I would also like to thank the other members of the Management Committee for their efforts this year in what has been a very successful season.

Representative There was something of a renaissance in the performance of our Representative Teams in 2004. Without a doubt the highlight was the win by the Canterbury A Girls at the Collier Trophy Tournament, which was hosted by this Association. To get back the Trophy that almost belonged to Canterbury in the 1990’s, was a wonderful performance by the Girls. Backing that performance up, there was an improved finishing position for the Canterbury A Boys gaining 3rd place at Hatch Cup. Our B Boys team also went to the Hatch Cup Tournament and did extremely well, almost making the top 8 and then went on to finish 16th. The B Girls this year headed for new territory participating at the McGrath Trophy Tournament held in Rotorua. This tournament hosts B teams from the upper North Island, and it provided a good opportunity for the team to meet stiffer competition from the stronger Associations up north. The team won through to the semi final where it lost on sudden-death penalty strokes to Auckland. The team went on to finish 3rd. Last but not least we had both the Canterbury Development Squads winning their respective Tournaments at the South Island B Championships held in Oamaru. Overall 2004 provided a wonderful overall result for Canterbury Junior Hockey, and thanks go to the Managers and Coaches who spent many dedicated hours getting the teams to perform so well.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT MASTERS

Masters is the fastest growing area in all sports at the moment. Witness the growth of the National Hockey Tournament where there were 55 teams involved in 2004, and the competition has been further extended for next year to include a 55+ Men’s grade. Masters players are major contributors to hockey-related activities across most of the clubs in Christchurch. They are club administrators, coaches, board members and supporters who do a lot to promote good hockey. Pam Thompson was appointed to the NZ Masters’ Hockey Council last year and flies Canterbury’s banner at every opportunity.

Canterbury Masters Hockey starts in October, breaks for Christmas for about six weeks and finishes at the end of March, so there are some who don’t get much time off hockey. Games are played on Thursday evenings at Porritt and Nunweek Parks, and one men’s game per week is played in Ashburton. There are currently 10 teams in the men’s and 9 in the women’s competitions, giving us 18 games of hockey in the season.

The Masters’ Hockey Committee applies some specific rules that are outside of the CHA by- laws and should be incorporated within that document.

• Players who play only Masters Hockey are required to pay a $50 registration fee. Other players have already paid this with their winter subs and need only cover match fees. • Flexibility is exercised with regards playing for more than one club. This is to encourage teams to use only masters’ aged players and to help build the competition. Teams are able to use up to three masters’ players from another club to make up numbers and still avoid a default, but are expected to play fair and not stack their team with other people’s “guns”. • The age criteria that is applied to the Canterbury competitions are lower than the national criteria by five years. This is to encourage aging players to stay with hockey, and it does succeed. There are several 29 year-old women who are really looking forward to turning 30 so that they can play Masters’.

In previous years we’ve found it difficult to gain the support of CHUC umpires for Masters’ games. They were reluctant to give up their summer break for players whom they perceived to have a negative attitude towards them. This year, umpires Grant Thornley and Kerry Watson have been prime movers in facilitating a situation where relationships between the two groups are much more cordial. Players are less confrontational and umpires more willing to give of their time, and this is greatly appreciated. It has certainly made for more positive hockey.

The 2003-2004 season was successful. At times it was a close-fought competition, but there is quite a gulf between the top and bottom-ranked teams, especially in the men’s grade.

The Masters’ National Hockey Tournament was held in North Harbour in March this year and Canterbury was well represented with four teams: Women’s 35+, Women’s 50+ (won the silver medal again), Men’s 40+, Men’s 50+ (won the gold medal for the third year running.) Several Canterbury players were chosen for National honours after the tournament in North Harbour in March 2004, others having already been selected in the previous year. ______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT Players are not eligible to play for other regions unless they have made themselves available for Canterbury teams and Canterbury cannot pick up draft players if there are eligible players in our region. The 50+ Women, however, have been successful for the past two years after augmenting our numbers with players from as far a field as Gore, Invercargill, Ranfurly, Timaru, Ngatea and Warkworth. At Masters’ level there is no limit to combining with regions that do not have a local Masters’ competition. Guest players pay a nominal registration fee to CHA.

Canterbury Hockey Masters acknowledges the support from the Canterbury Foundation to attend the National Tournament.

In 2005 there may be as many as six Canterbury teams at National Masters’ Tournament.

Pam Thompson Masters Chairperson

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT CANTERBURY HOCKEY SUPPORTERS’ CLUB

This season saw the start of the renovations of the stand and viewing section. At present it is difficult to see all of the No 2 pitch while seated. Perhaps the City Council will endeavour to address this. However it is very pleasant to get out of the wind and under some cover to see some hockey. It is hoped that the enclosure of the front stand will be completed by the Christchurch City Council within the next three to four years.

The naming of the Lounge has been attended to and this was in accordance with an agreement between Canterbury Hockey and the Supporters Club.

Honours Board It is hoped to have the Honours Boards erected and updated before the end of 2004

Members Membership is down, hovering around the three hundred mark. New members are always welcome and Jeanette Higgins and Trevor Good can provide information about the Supporters Club.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT UMPIRES

2004 saw another challenging year for umpiring in Canterbury. C.H.U.C. has endeavoured to broaden its ranks and further strengthen umpiring in Canterbury and have had a lot of success this year.

Most of the success however is at present only being seen in C.H.U.C’s junior ranks where we have very strong numbers and an excellent team working towards both better coaching and better support for juniors wishing to umpire A huge thanks must go to Colleen Cameron and her coaching team as well as Marilyn Downward for the progression of junior umpiring in Canterbury which is reflected in the umpires who went to Hatch Cup and Collier Trophy.

C.H.U.C’s senior umpiring numbers have remained mostly consistent this year with good numbers for both the Women’s and Men’s CPL grade. We do however have a large gap between the top elite group of umpires who umpire in the Lion Foundation National League and the club umpires. It is out intention for 2005 to provide more coaching support for the senior umpires and more active recruiting to try to close the gap between the Club and Elite umpires. Ted Gilliver once again worked tirelessly as umpire appointer and made the best of many difficult positions and requests placed upon C.H.U.C. and its umpires. A special thanks goes to Ted for his commitment to this thankless job.

It is worth noting the Canterbury had five umpires officiating this year in the National League – more than any other association in New Zealand. Our National League umpires performed very well throughout the duration of the National League and this saw Craig Gribble appointed to the men’s final and Nigel Iggo as reserve. Gareth Greenfield was also recognised at the NZ Awards Dinner with the most promising umpire for 2004 award.

C.H.U.C. are looking forward to the challenges of 2005 and are positive that with the support of the CHA board we can ensure strong umpiring is an integral part of the Club hockey scene in Christchurch.
