This positive direction is reflected in both on field (turf) and off field successes. The on field successes are typified by the magnificent performance of all the representative teams. This has come about due to the tremendous efforts of the coaches, managers, players and supporters. On behalf of the Association I would like to thank you for your efforts. However, without the financial, administrative and coaching support provided by the Association’s permanent employees this success would not have occurred. I would like to thank Greg Clark for stepping in to the position of acting Development Manager at relatively short notice. Greg has now been confirmed as the Development Manager. Throughout the year Greg has undertaken all of his tasks in a thoroughly professional manner. His knowledge and experience has made a huge contribution to the performance of all the representative teams and the development of players. Thank you to Greg. The Association’s contribution to the funding of these teams has been substantial. Once again the Association has managed to further reduce the players’ cost of representing Canterbury. This could not have been achieved without the dedication and hard work of our Sponsorship Manager Michele Wattez. Michele’s acute ongoing understanding and knowledge in this area has been invaluable. Thank you to Michele. The administrative assistance provided by Margaret Huckstep and Lyndsey Leask has ensured that things have run smoothly. Both Margaret and Lyndsey have spent countless hours to ensure that all administrative matters are dealt with in an efficient and timely manner. Thank you to Margaret and Lyndsey. Without good leadership an organisation such as ours would, in spite of the best efforts of the staff, flounder. Derek Torkington has now completed his first year as CEO. Notwithstanding that Derek had little background in hockey he has done a tremendous job in providing leadership of the Association. His tireless efforts have not gone unnoticed. The Association is very fortunate to have Derek Torkington leading it. Thank you to Derek for all your efforts. The off field successes include the high level of maintenance of the facilities, a new turf at Nunweek Park and the completion of Stage one of the upgrade to the Grandstand at Porritt Park. Without the leadership provided by Peter Seymour the Association’s facilities would not be maintained at the present high level. Thank you for your efforts Peter. Peter has been ably supported by Bill Lynn and Bevan Fergusson who have worked long hours to ensure that our facilities are maintained at the highest possible standard. Thank you to Bill and Bevan. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2004 ANNUAL REPORT The next twelve months look very exciting with the proposed replacement of the No 1 turf at Porritt Park due to be completed before the start of the 2005 season and the building of new Association offices at the northern end of the grandstand. Thank you to my fellow Board members who have provided me with a huge amount of support and encouragement; not only over the past twelve months, but also for the four years I have been on the Board. REPORT After the previous difficult year we are pleased to see that Canterbury Hockey is now in a sound financial position, due mainly to the strong support we receive from the funding agencies. The Board has continued to show strong commitment to Canterbury Hockey and without their valuable support my job would have been considerably harder. Canterbury Hockey has a dedicated group of Board members led by Jeff Goldstein and this has shown in the way that the Board has operated successfully during the year. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the members of the Finance Committee under the Chairmanship of Graeme Paterson and the valuable work from Paul Duggan & Associates, our accountants, who have given many hours outside of their brief to Canterbury Hockey. Under the Chairmanship of Jeff Goldstein, the Executive Committee has met monthly to discuss any urgent business and the time given has been appreciated as with other Board members During the year we had a stable staff and with the addition of Greg Clark taking over the Development Manager’s role after Lincoln Churchill resigned to work in Hong Kong, this has enabled us to work through the season with few problems. The staff at Canterbury Hockey have continued to work long hours and both the Board and myself appreciate the extra hours that are put in outside of their job descriptions. On the representative side, over the whole season, Canterbury was the top province nationally. Four National titles were won, more than any other Association and Canterbury was represented in more tournaments throughout the year. It is a credit to the coaches, managers and the many volunteers who help in this area that Canterbury has continued to be one of the leading provinces. This year a new Competitions programme was put in place with varying degrees of success. This will be built on for the following season with the continuing development to strengthen Canterbury Hockey. It has been a very busy year for Canterbury Hockey. During the year we have replaced the turf at Nunweek Park and are currently looking at how we will finance and replace the No. 1 turf at Porritt Park. This turf has been a continual problem with flooding and gradual wear and
