Their results were backed up by very positive results from our age group teams the Under 21 Men and Women, Under15 Girls and Hatch Cup teams winning their respective tournaments. The Under15 Men, Under15B Women and our Collier Trophy teams all finished second and our Under 18 Men third, making for proud results for a proud Association. This year has been a very successful one. The Canterbury Hockey finances are in a strong position which have allowed for continued development. We have upgraded our facilities so that we now have an excellent number one Turf enabling us to host NHL Tournaments and New Zealand games in the future. The new office building will enable staff to work in great conditions and is an excellent acquisition to Canterbury Hockey. It will present a great shop front to the public for many years to come These results do not happen without the hard work of many people within Canterbury Hockey. Derek Torkington, CEO, has worked successfully to build a positive relationship with all of the hockey community. He has been ably assisted by Greg Clark, our Coaching and Development Manager who has implemented new programmes and refined previous ones. The Facilities staff capably led by Peter Seymour (Bill Lynn, Mel Rainbow) has presented us with safe, well dressed turfs, and clean, tidy stadia. Margaret Huckstep ensures Canterbury Hockey functions at satisfactory levels at all times. Thank you also to Lindsay Leask for her hard work in the background. The Board has continued to develop the systems put in place so that our game moves forward. This year sees the end of the Board term for Bev Savage who has made a huge contribution to hockey in Canterbury. Her knowledge will be missed. Chris Maister’s term as CHA President has concluded and his contribution at Board meetings and his passion for Canterbury Hockey will be sorely missed. I would also like to thank all of the committees who support Canterbury Hockey to make it one of the best hockey provinces in the country. Each Committee holds a special place in the fabric of Canterbury Hockey. It is your contribution that helps our community grow and develop. Thank you to each individual player, official, staff member, parent, spouse, supporter, and friend who makes up the body of Canterbury Hockey for contributing to this terrific season. Anthony Koorey Board Chairperson __________________________________________________________________________________________________ CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2005 ANNUAL REPORT CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER REPORT Another interesting year has been completed and I am pleased to say that Canterbury Hockey has continued on in a sound financial position. This has been maintained with the support of the funding organisations. Under the new legislation this position is always under review and will have to be managed carefully for the 2006 season. The Board continues to work for the betterment of Canterbury Hockey and the hours that are put in on top of their paid employment is outstanding. Without the support of these dedicated people Canterbury Hockey would not be the strong organisation it is today. Once again I would like to thank the members of the Finance Committee who under the Chairmanship of Graeme Paterson in conjunction with our accountants Paul Duggan and Associates have completed another successful year. This year we have had a new Chairman in Anthony Koorey who has led the Board through some challenging times. It has been appreciated by the staff at Canterbury Hockey that Anthony has made the change of Chairman a seamless exercise. We have had few changes with the staff for the year with Steve Sheppard our new Sponsorship and Marketing Manager coming on board and with some minor restructuring Mel Rainbow has taken over the Manager’s role at Porritt Park. We welcome both of these new staff members on board and I am sure they will make a significant contribution to the hockey community. Staff continue to work long hours for the betterment of hockey and the commitment they have all put in for the 2005 year is appreciated by the Board and myself. Our representative teams have performed to a high level once again. We were the top province nationally, five national titles were won, four runners up and one third place out of twelve tournaments entered. Altogether this was an outstanding result and a credit to the high standard of coaches, managers and volunteers that we have in this province. We have completed almost all of the projects that were started in 2005 with the laying of Porritt 1 and the completion of the new office building. This gives us a complex to be proud of and enabled us to have very successful National League finals at Porritt. We will continue to build on our successes for the following year making sure that the proud tradition of Canterbury Hockey is maintained. Derek Torkington Chief Executive Officer __________________________________________________________________________________________________ CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2005 ANNUAL REPORT SPONSORSHIP & MARKETING REPORT Like most New Zealanders I place great importance on success both on and off the field. With Charitable Trusts further tightening their donation policies we have to work smarter to secure funding. This will involve more fundraising events and initiatives which will require the support of our hockey community. As such the continuing success of Canterbury Hockey is very much dependent on the assistance and support of our community and building partnerships with local businesses. It is my aim to develop relationships of mutual benefit and in doing so raising the profile of Canterbury Hockey and its players. Grants from Charitable & Gaming Machine Trusts To host tournaments, send representative teams away to compete in their national competitions, provide players with equipment, uniforms and facilities costs many thousands of dollars. It is highly unlikely that our Association, or members, would be able to achieve all of this without the high level of funding received from Charitable Trusts and Gaming Machine Trusts. Canterbury Hockey would like to express their sincere gratitude to all those who have generously provided financial assistance, through various forms of funding, in particular the Canterbury Community Trust, Lion Foundation, NZ Community Trust, Pub Charity and Scottwood Trusts. Fundraising Events This year Canterbury Hockey focused on two main fundraising events, both of which were a tremendous success! • Golf Tournament at the Waitikiri Golf Club The weather was brilliant as ten keen teams teed off at Waitikiri Golf Club on St Patrick’s Day. It was a full field with every player receiving a prize.
