CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 3 - CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

In February this year I was given the honour of being elected Chairperson of your Association. In this short time I have become acutely aware of the huge amount of work put in by the large number of volunteers who contribute to the success of hockey in Canterbury.

In the main these people go about performing their roles without much recognition. I would like to publicly acknowledge and congratulate all those people, whether they are umpires, coaches, managers, supporters, parents or family for their splendid contribution to the success of Canterbury Hockey in 2002.

Of course hockey would not exist without the players and to all you players I would like to congratulate you on your participation and success.

Similarly, without the continuing efforts of the various committees and in particular the competitions committee led by Neville England there would be no organized competitions. The Competition Committee does, under quite difficult circumstances at times, a tremendous job. To those people who might criticize some of the decisions made by the Competitions Committee all I can say is - the Committee needs members, put yourself forward and help.

Marc and his staff have continued to provide an excellent service to the hockey community. Thank you for your efforts in 2002. Following Jason Robb’s resignation midyear Michelle Wattez was appointed as the sponsorship manager and in her short time with the Association has been enthusiastic and successful.

Margaret Huckstep was recently appointed to a full-time position as Administration Manager to the Association and as a result she has stepped down from her position as a Board Member after serving for eight years. Margaret has done a tremendous amount of work for Canterbury Hockey, both as a Board Member and as Chairperson for the last six years. Thank you Margaret and we look forward to a long lasting and successful new relationship. Also leaving the Board after serving two terms is Graeme Abbott. His expertise and experience in the sponsorship area was most valuable. I would also like to thank my colleagues on the Board of Canterbury Hockey for their support. The Association has continued to prosper due to their combined wisdom, guidance, good government and common sense.

The 2002 season saw the second turf at Porritt Park commissioned. This not only allowed for more training and game slots but it also provided a superb surface for our players. As a consequence in May 2002 we saw the first international hockey game on the new turf when the Black Sticks defeated the USA.

The premier Canterbury women’s team – The Cats, had an outstandingly successful season in winning the national hockey league. The premier Canterbury men’s team – The Cavaliers, also had a successful year by coming third in the national hockey league. This augurs well for 2003.

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 4 - The other Canterbury representative teams, including the various age group teams, had mixed results. All players performed creditably and represented the province with distinction. Congratulations to all our representative players.

As the Board looks towards 2003 one of the biggest challenges that faces the Association is funding. The Board recognizes that the various grants that have been available to sporting bodies in past years are declining. Canterbury Hockey will need to work more efficiently and “smarter” in order to ensure that sufficient funding is obtained to allow us to continue to provide a variety of services at the highest standard.

Also in 2003 the Board will be endeavouring to implement a policy with the aim of minimizing the cost to players when they represent Canterbury. Members of the Association will be kept informed as this policy is developed.

I look forward to the challenges of 2003 when once again we will all contribute to Canterbury Hockey’s continued success.

Jeff Goldstein Board Chairperson

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 5 - SPONSORSHIP REPORT

2002 has been a successful year for the Canterbury Hockey Association, in that the support received from our sponsors has been outstanding.

One highlight of our 2002 Season was a Celebrity Luncheon and Auction held at the Christchurch Casino. This was well received by all those who attended. Many thanks to the Christchurch Casino for their superb organisation of this event.

Our representative teams have benefited greatly from our association with the Scenic Circle Hotels, the service and calibre of accommodation provided has been excellent, and we continue with a sponsorship partnership into the 2003 Season.

We are very fortunate that Donnithorne Simms continues to be our vehicle sponsor; they offer their support by providing 3 Mitsubishi Lancers for our use.

The Community Trust has very generously supported the Canterbury Hockey Association by providing a grant to assist with the running of our organisation particularly in the coaching and development programmes.

Special thanks go to the Gaming Machine Charitable Trusts, who sponsor Canterbury Hockey, these are; Bendigo Trust, Canterbury Foundation, Community Grants Foundation, Lion Foundation, Metro Charitable Trust, NZ Community Trust, Scottwood Charitable Trust, and The Southern Trust. Without the high level of financial assistance from these organisations it would be too costly for the Canterbury Hockey Association, and its members, to undertake many of the current programmes.

The contributions from the Parklands Tavern – sponsor of the Canterbury Cavaliers, Tuskers Richmond – sponsor of the Canterbury Cats, Fitzgerald Arms – sponsor of the Canterbury Premier League, the Cardrona On Avon, the Excelsior Sports Bar and the Golden Mile Tavern have been invaluable and have provided much needed assistance to our representative teams.

With the increase in numbers of people visiting both Nunweek and Porritt Parks, signage surrounding the turfs has become a very cost effective marketing medium; I envisage the growth of demand in this sponsorship option to continue.

Organisations currently involved are as follows: -

Air New Zealand, AMI Insurance, AMP Mark Rippin, Arrow International, B A Murray Ltd, Cameron Air & Seafreight, Cameron Electrical, Canterbury of NZ, Cardrona on Avon, Christies Café, Coca Cola, Cynosure Productions, D A Lewis, ETA, Fencing Industries, Harewood Hockey Club, Hi-Stress Concrete, Jade Software Corporation, Just Hockey, Key Business Partners, Kookaburra, Lincoln University, Lion Breweries, McDonalds Family Restaurants, Meridian Energy, Montana Wines, 92 More FM, Nuggets & Diggers Casino Café Bar, Paragon

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 6 - Computers, Philips NZ Ltd, QEII Sports & Leisure Centre, Rangi Ruru Girls School, Scenic Circle Hotels, Shell Carlton Corner, Sport Science Centre, Sportsmed, Tandoori Palace, The Press, University of Canterbury.

In addition to signage sponsorship, many of these businesses have been exceedingly generous in providing product and/or financial support to the Canterbury Hockey Association.

One way we have been able to acknowledge the support from our sponsors is by listing them on our website, hockeycanterbury.co.nz, and offering them the opportunity to include their web addresses as a link. Without Cynosure Production’s expertise, this task would not have been completed so quickly or efficiently.

Our aim for the 2003 Season is to introduce a “Club” atmosphere to the Canterbury Hockey Association, by providing the hockey community the chance to be involved with many fun and interesting events.

We are currently working on fundraising ideas for 2003. Included in our Calendar of Events are:

• Launch of our 2003 Season with a Golf Tournament at Avondale Golf Club • Celebrity Luncheon at the Christchurch Casino • Race Night at Addington Raceway • Mystery Bus Trips • Pool Competition at Cue Time • Trivia Nights

All in all we have had a great 2002 which would not have been possible without assistance from volunteers, supporters and sponsors, many thanks to all those concerned.

Michele Wattez Sponsorship Manager .

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 7 - PUBLICITY AND MEDIA

PUBLICITY Unfortunately with the demise of NOW TV there was no coverage of local hockey this season but CTV provided coverage of the home National League games after a price was negotiated.

The Association's web page had a major overhaul during the season but the real challenge for the Association is to ensure the information is kept up-to-date. It is fast becoming the most effective way in which the players are getting information about Canterbury Hockey i.e. draws etc.

E-mail is obviously also becoming an increasingly popular way of getting information out to members and during the summer the Association is looking at improving the system so that a database of email addresses, by grade, can be used to get the information that is required from time to time out to selected groups.

Neither the Hockey Race Night nor the Golf Day were held in 2002 but these events have already been included in the 2003 calendar along with a host of many new events.

MEDIA The NEWSTALK ZB crew (Brian Ashby, Malcolm Ellis, Craig Kerr and Lesley Murdoch) gives superb coverage to our sport.

Malcolm Ellis with his Saturday Scoreboard show allows the Association to give updates during the afternoon on our local Fitzgerald Arms Tavern Canterbury Premier League (CPL) matches and also the opportunity to promote other events that may be occurring in our sport. We are indebted to the coverage we get on the Saturday Scoreboard which the Association knows is enjoyed by many listeners.

Brian Ashby as sports editor has gained a real passion for hockey after covering the sport at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and he continually contacts the Association for updates on the sport and ensures our sport gets good coverage when events are occurring.

Kevin Tutty from THE PRESS once again provided hockey with excellent coverage during the year. Whilst some in the hockey community are disappointed with the overall media coverage hockey gets, the coverage hockey receives in THE PRESS is far greater than for other main centres in the country. We are extremely fortunate to have a reporter with Kevin's knowledge appointed to Hockey, as many other Associations do not have this opportunity.

Nick Tolerton of the STAR once again provided regular stories from hockey and was always searching out stories with a differing nature. The Association appreciates his work for hockey and especially the coverage given during the National Hockey League.

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 8 - James Croot who works for the Eastern Mail not only gives hockey very good coverage in the EASTERN MAIL but ensures we have articles in the other Mail publications as well e.g.. WESTERN MAIL.

Thanks to Peter Oakes who assisted with the Media Releases this season, which meant weekly updates being sent to the media and being displayed on the webpage about the local CPL competition

In summary the Association thanks all the media for their support and we are indebted to the coverage they provide for our sport.

We can always bemoan the coverage we get from the media but it really is up to the Hockey Community to keep the pressure on the media if we want greater coverage. As a sport we must ensure that information is supplied to the media both at Association and club level if we are to get the coverage we deserve.

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 10 - ADMINISTRATION AND FINANCE

Details of financial performance are reported directly to the Association’s Annual General Meeting.

In February this year the Board of Management held its first meeting where the Strategic Plan was reviewed and several new ideas were put forward including looking at ways to ensure that the cost of playing hockey was affordable.

A focus this year was to try and have all the sub committees appointed and operational but unfortunately this has not occurred. This will be a major focus over the upcoming summer months to ensure they are all in place going into the 2003 season.

A highlight, committee wise, was the formation of the Coaching and Development Advisory Group, which met on several occasions during the year.

The Board of Management met on six occasions during the year to discuss policy matters and set the direction for Canterbury Hockey to be carried out by the staff.

During the year in staff movements Lyndsey Leask moved from the role of Administration Manager to become the Development Managers Personal Assistant. The Association is grateful that we have been able to retain the services of Lyndsey Leask who brings a wealth of sporting expertise to our sport and her thoughts are always well respected.

Hayley Parkin was appointed to the position of Administration Manager but was only with the Association for a couple of months before being lured away to a teaching position in Auckland. Margaret Huckstep has been appointed to the role to replace Hayley Parkin and the Association will no doubt be well served by Margaret who has a lengthy involvement in the game as an administrator both at regional and national level.

Lincoln Churchill continued in his role as Development Manager and he has a real passion and vision for the game in Canterbury and the direction he wants it to take. Lincoln has put a lot of planning in for next season during this year and a lot of new initiatives are planned to happen. With the support of the clubs and schools 2003 promises to be a very exciting year in the Coaching and Development area.

Jason Robb resigned as the Association's Sponsorship Manager in 2002 and the Association wishes to express our thanks to him for establishing the position and forming new sponsorship avenues for the Association. Michele Wattez, his replacement, brings excellent credentials to the role and a proven background in the sponsorship area. Already in her short time with Canterbury Hockey Michele has shown that she is going to be a real asset for the Association.

The facilities staff, under the excellent leadership of Peter Seymour, continues to maintain Porritt Park and Nunweek Park to the highest level and they are to be commended for the way in which they maintain the parks in such a tidy and safe way for the players.

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 11 - The association thanks Bill Lynn for his work at Nunweek Park and Bevan Fergusson for his role at Porritt Park. During the year Oliver Norton (Porritt Park Assistant) resigned and took up a role with Jade Stadium. We wish him all the very best for the future and thank him for the contribution he made to Canterbury Hockey. Nathan Rolton who was in the role of manager at Nunweek Park, also resigned.

OBITUARIES

Several stalwarts of Canterbury Hockey passed away during the last year. Among them were:

GERALD MAISTER. Due to a rugby injury, Gerald Maister turned to hockey. As a goalkeeper he played for the Selwyn Club and represented Buller, Canterbury, the South Island and New Zealand. A senior teacher and headmaster in several primary schools in the northwest suburb, Gerald encouraged many young people to play hockey and develop their skills. In retirement he continued to foster youth hockey in his involvement with the Waimairi Artificial Surface project. Gerald pioneered radio and television commentating in the City. He served as CHA Secretary for many years and was a member of the NZHA Management Committee and was President of CHA 1989- 91. In all of these activities he earned respect for his integrity and his genuine interest in all players.

DAVE TILLEY was a goalkeeper for High School Old Boys when the Club achieved senior status in 1951. He continued to be a loyal supporter of his Club when he retired from playing and was made a Life Member in 1980. Dave made his career in men's wear and this brought him into contact with many hockey followers. He was well known for his immaculate attire, his sense of humour and his involvement in social activities. As the three sons in the Tilley family began playing hockey, Dave became a keen follower of Canterbury Hockey.

NANCY WAGNER began her involvement with hockey whilst at High School in the 1920's. Nancy became an administrator in the mid 1940's and served Canterbury and the NZWHA for thirty years that culminated with Life Membership to both Canterbury Hockey and New Zealand Hockey In her retirement she was a keen supporter of Canterbury teams at the National Tournament and actively supported the New Zealand women's tours. Nancy was a well-respected person and known for her forthright approach and common sense. She was also an astute businesswoman and in the 1930's came back from Australia with the right to make party hats for Woolworth's and on selling her business she retained a royalty

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 12 - COMPETITIONS REPORT

This season, the Competitions Committee had the luxury of Porritt Park’s second turf being operational, thus giving a total of three turfs available for the winter hockey season. Again, like last season, hockey was on a growth line as a winter sport with a small increase in the number of teams. The third turf allowed for more Friday night games, as well finishing Sunday evening games a little earlier than has been the case in past seasons.

With the Masters tournament, the National Colts (men and women), at the beginning of the season, as well as the men’s Under 18 tournament during the season, this placed tremendous pressure on the Competitions Committee to play all the grades, without penalising too many of the teams, or grades concerned. At the Mid season meeting between clubs and Competitions Committee, it was resolved, for next season, not to play certain grades during the holidays, as well as try where possible not to play teams affected by underage representative commitments. This season in consultation with the Board, Clubs, and the Development Manager, the Competitions Committee set guidelines for game deferments due to clubs having representative players in their teams. This new ruling will apply to the 2003 season. Although the CPL for both men and women still had six teams, the standard of the bottom teams lifted making the bottom of the table a lot tighter, and this showed in the closeness of the games.

Southern Hockey League continued with the same format as past seasons and still has its share of difficulties, especially as the NHL players prepared for the NHL games ahead, leaving some teams weaker than would be expected. The Competitions Committee will over the next few seasons try to resolve this problem. The NZHF has yet to decide on the timing of the NHL and this will impact on our forward planning.

The structure of CHA’s club competition was changed this season, from round robin winners, to semi finals and finals to select the grade winner, with the exception of 2nd grade, which kept the round robin winner. The new format created a lot of interest, and was well received by hockey players in all grades as teams struggled to make the top four for the play-offs, thus allowing teams the chance to win the grade, when they only finish in the top four. Next season all grades including 2nd grade will have pool play followed by play–offs for grade winners. Another development has been end of season play-offs for CPL and 1st grade promotion/relegation, to allow clubs and teams to plan for the next season.

The Competitions Committee changed its operational process to work with focus groups. Although difficulties were experienced at the start of the season, by season’s end the focus groups were working well, allowing the Competitions Committee to access the next seasons starting and finishing dates for all the grades.

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 13 - The Committee will lose at the annual meeting Chris Clements, who gave valuable service to hockey during the short time he was available, along with Colleen Cameron, who has been elected to a position on New Zealand Hockey Umpires' Committee. We wish them well in their future endeavours. Other committee members offered not only time but also their knowledge to allow hockey to function at the level hockey players expect.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 17 - SOUTHERN HOCKEY LEAGUE

The timing of the Tuskers Richmond Southern Hockey League once again conflicted with the NZ Hockey League and hence the Canterbury Cats and Cavaliers players were not available to compete.

On the positive note, it does allow clubs, with an eye to the future, to introduce new players at the CPL level. It also allows the Associations to be more competitive and therefore the League was very close through all the divisions.

The competitiveness of the Associations evident as they won three out of the four titles.

Otago won the men's Division One title for the first time from Harewood in a closely fought final 3-2. The Division Two men's final was a one way affair with the HSOB/Burnside defeating Sewlyn 4-0.

Nelson, after being runner up last year in the women's Division One, went the extra step this year and won the title with a 3-1 win over Harewood.

Mid/South Canterbury fought out a thrilling Division Two women's final with Rangiora. Mid/South Canterbury won 3-2 and secured the title for the first time.

Next year the Tuskers Richmond Southern Hockey League again appears to be affected by the timing of the NZ Hockey League.

Clubs and schools have shown that obstacles can be overcome. With the added bonus of the re-introduction of the 2003 National Inter-Club finals to be held in Wellington, there will be much to play for in the 2003 Tuskers Richmond Southern Hockey League.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 19 - GRASS HOCKEY The 2002 season was another good year for the Cardrona on Avon Premier Grass hockey competition. The number of teams remained the same as last year

Men Women

Avon Avon Wizards Avon Harewood Harewood Hinemoa/Kaiapoi Hinemoa/Kaiapoi Hornby Selwyn Blue Selwyn Green Otautahi Selwyn HSOB/Burnside Sydenham

Members of these teams change very little over the years. Some of the grass players also take part on the turf during the week and taking into account that many of these players have been playing hockey for many years this shows great enthusiasm for the sport. The men and women's grades play very competitive hockey.

The season started on 20 April 2002 with two rounds finishing 20 August 2002. Round Robin Winners were Men - Avon Wizards and Women - Hornby. The competition then went into Pool Play with the top three and bottom four culminating in finals on 31 August 2002.

In the final games Hornby played Harewood in the women's section in a closely fought game with Hornby winning in extra time. In the men the Avon Wizards won over HSOB/Burnside in an evenly contested game. Congratulations to the winning teams and to all the other teams who competed this season.

Maybe it is easier to run a grass competition than a turf one, and I must say we have a very smooth running programme. A pre season meeting is held in March/April. All dates for the season are decided. It is unusual for a club not to be represented at this meeting. and the format for the previous season is reviewed. Usually we don't meet again until the end of the season unless there have been games cancelled due to bad weather; then the format may need to be reviewed.

We are fortunate in our Grade Managers, Julie Crake for the women and Graham Brosnahan for the men. Both these people are busy with other hockey commitments so a big thank you to them. Mike McIlroy has organised the draw this year and has done very well. Didn't hear any problems re venues, etc. Well done, Mike!

For the second year the Harewood Club hosted the finals day at Nunweek Park. Thank you to Harewood for this; we appreciate the good work you do with the grounds and organising the function. We hope to arrange more financial help for Harewood for the finals day next season.

Thank you to all the players, coaches, managers and CHA for supporting grass hockey. Thank you also to all the umpires who turn out regularly every week. A special mention to the umpires who fill in for other teams as well.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 20 - Finally on behalf of Canterbury Hockey I would like to thank Cardrona on Avon for their sponsorship over the season. We really appreciate your support and trust we can all work together again next season.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 21 - FACILITIES

NUNWEEK PARK

The Turf The scheduled replacement of the sand turf into a water turf has, due to funding restraints, been postponed until late 2003. This will result in considerable work being done over the summer to repair the southern end circle, which is in bad shape, but we are sure that this turf will be available during 2003.

The replacement policy of the past for lighting has not continued this year and now some lamps are well past their use-by date. Around 20 lamps have surpassed the 2500 hours allowed. The replacement for 12 lamps is included in the 2003 budget.

The Grounds Bill Lynn continues to spend a lot of time on ground maintenance and has planted a further 20 trees on site; the grassed areas are in good shape as are the perimeter fences. One area of concern is the wooden fencing surrounding the turf, which is showing wear and tear in places; replacement panels are allowed for in the 2003 budget.

The painting programme slowed down during 2002 but the facility buildings will be painted over the summer.

Staffing The new manager at Nunweek Park, Nathan Rolton, decided that this was not for him and departed from Canterbury Hockey in June 2002. Since then Bill Lynn was appointed as manager. With Nathan not being replaced, Peter Seymour joined forces with Bill Lynn to ensure a smooth running operation at Nunweek and to share time on site. It is planned to advertise for a cleaner to assist the manager in general cleaning Monday, Wednesday and Friday for a total of 10 hours per week during 2003 as a trial run.

The Shop Canteen facilities at Nunweek continue to be successful. Even though the turf had limited usage for hockey the shop still recorded $24000 sales for the year, which is a great achievement. Discussions will be under way shortly with W.A.S.P. and Canterbury Hockey regarding the canteen becoming under the auspices of C.H.A.

The Future Nunweek Park will always be an integral part of Canterbury Hockey, and 2003 will be no exception. It is hoped that funding will be forthcoming to ensure the replacement of the turf.

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 22 - PORRITT PARK

The Turf No 2 turf is very well used, seems like all year round now. Although we have had teething problems with the top of the circles coming adrift and some tabs coming away, it is in reasonable condition after an extremely busy season. It is not an easy task to keep clean and tidy due to constant debris from trees, and also dust from the grass ground development. Astrograss are due to come down to repair the damage to the turf.

No 1 turf continues to be a problem with drainage causing flooding at times, but it has behaved itself well during 2002. The centre sprinklers have been realigned and are giving a wider coverage of the whole area. The rubber shock pad attached to the turf is a cause for concern as the rubber is starting to crumble in places and is difficult to repair. Replacement of this turf is scheduled around the end of 2005.

The Grounds The grounds are looking very attractive with the open plan in place. Some seeding of the banks is now in progress and should cover the bare areas shortly with new grass. Some grass sprinklers around No. 1 turf were damaged during mowing and have now been replaced.

A mini-twister of sorts demolished a large section of fencing on the east side of No. 1 turf recently. This has been re-erected by staff and netting posts concreted into the ground. A new lighter weight net is being made and will be on site in the near future.

The northern bank on No. 2 turf is too steep for mowing on the fence side and has now been poisoned ready for shrub planting over the late summer. Staff have discussed this with C.C.C. nursery experts who have advised on planting types.

The Buildings At this point in time, the C.C.C. have not indicated a timetable for the development of the upstairs area; this leaves us in a quandary of what to do down below. With this in mind we intend to paint the four changing rooms, including the floor, the entranceway and passageways if time and funding permits.

Negotiations are underway to erect a ticket office by the main gates of No. 2 turf, which will act as a staff room as well. The current ticket office is due to be removed when development of the grandstand gets under way.

Staffing Bevan Fergusson was appointed manager of Porritt Park in early March, and has proved to be a great asset to Canterbury Hockey. Oliver Norton, the assistant manager, decided to move on recently, and has not been replaced. Like Nunweek Park, it is the intention to appoint a part- time cleaner for 10 hours per week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, to assist the manager. It is also envisaged that a person will be appointed to look after the training needs at Porritt on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 until 10 p.m. This should ensure that the current three staff can concentrate on games, players, coaches, schools and maintenance programmes. ______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 23 - Lighting/Scoreboard The lighting needs of No. 1 turf are critical, with 3 lights already out. We have budgeted for the replacement of all Stage 1 lights during 2003 and the Stage 2 lights that are out or lost the lux illumination, also a light that is out on the new turf will be replaced.

The scoreboard on No. 1 turf is being repaired for slight damage, cleaned and painted. Funding is not available yet for a permanent scoreboard on No. 2 turf.

The Future With a new turf at Nunweek in 2003, and a new turf at Porritt during 2005, the future of facilities for hockey looks good. We have smart looking grounds, development of the lounge area upstairs to look forward to and we have a company who are very interested in providing canteen and eating facilities upstairs with hot chips, soup, pizza, toasted sandwiches, rolls, pies and other goodies, with a range of coffee and a bar. If all goes well they will commence early 2003 on a temporary basis until the full development of the upstairs is finalised. All we need now is to increase our hockey players and hockey clubs as users of the turfs and facilities at both Porritt and Nunweek.

We, the staff, Peter, Bevan and Bill, look forward to 2003 with anticipation and enthusiasm

Peter Seymour Facilities Manager

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 24 - COACHING AND DEVELOPMENT REPORT

Development Programmes

The past year has ushered in some major new initiatives to the coaching and development programme. The Pathway Development Squad has been introduced for the first time. The concept of this squad is to track players’ development as they move through the age groups squads. Players receive a written report as well as a tape of video analysis of them performing basic skills. A Goal Keeper Academy has also been introduced this year to try to provide some high quality specific coaching for young keepers in the Canterbury region. A Year 8 Hatch and Collier Development Squad has also been introduced this year. The purpose of this squad is to provide a stepping stone for elite young players between primary and U15 level hockey.

The existing squads have also continued to run. The start of this season the elite development squads provided some good quality coaches for the players that made up the base of the representative squads. Next year this squad will change to be the Pathway Squad. The open development squads have also been well attended this year. These squads provide extra coaching for those players on the fringe of representative squads. This year’s squad is also being used for coaching development, with support and assistance from the Development Manager.

Summer camps were well attended and were a great success despite some unseasonal weather in the first camp. Aside from hockey a range of activities were introduced including; pool visits, video arcade evenings and perhaps the most exciting thing of all, human pyramids.

Coaching

Hockey Forums made their first appearance on the calendar in 2002. Although attendance for one of the two forums was badly affected by a rival code's World Cup, the concept was well received. The forums provided a range of speakers and topics that were pitched at all levels of coaching and development. Guest speakers included national and provincial coaches, national players, top-level sports scientists and psychologists.

A group of top coaches was taken down to Dunedin this year to the South Island Academy Forum. The keynote speaker was Ric Charlesworth, so there was extra special interest from the hockey fraternity.

A Level Two coaching course was also run in Christchurch this year, which was the first hockey specific coaching course that the South Island has seen for quite some time. There was a great range of excellent presenters including the national men’s coach, , and the national women’s coach, Jan Borren.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 25 - Above all it must not be forgotten that these programmes and events rely heavily on the assistance from people who often give of their time for little or no financial reimbursement. To these people the hockey community should be truly indebted for without them the game has no future.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 26 - 2002 REPRESENTATIVE REPORT

This year’s representative season was an indifferent one for Canterbury. It is the first year in quite some time that someone will be able to reach in and give the trophy cabinet a good clean. Despite not bringing home the silver ware there were some encouraging signs from some of our representative teams.

The Canterbury U15 boys’ team travelled to Dunedin for the National U15 tournament. After producing some good results and playing themselves into a prime position after a good win over Nelson the team had a disappointing setback losing to Tauranga. This put them in the play off for third, which they shared with Nelson. The U15B boys produced some good results through their representative programme but did not attend a tournament this year.

The Canterbury U15 A girls were one of three teams that had the tough prospect of two semi final games in one day. They lost the second of their two games to the eventual winners Otago. The U15B girls were the only age group team that won a tournament, taking out the national U15B tournament in fine fashion up in Blenheim.

U18 Nationals proved to be tough for the teams that attended them this year. Both our U18A teams had the tough prospect of two semis in one day which this year’s tournament format provided. The U18A girls managed to win them both, the only team in the country in any of the age group tournaments to achieve this, only to trip up the next day against North Harbour in the final. Our U18B team also attended this tournament after a strong North Island Queen’s Birthday tournament effort in Palmerston North, finishing 1st equal with Manawatu. The team had a tough week with the coach falling ill and a difficult draw. It finished lower down the list than it would have expected - 15th.

The U18 A Boys’ team finished a disappointing 5th after they lost to Auckland in their second semi final for the day. The U18B boys finished 5th in the Central North Island B team tournament. Though they did not compete in the under 18 national tournament as a team almost every member was represented in either the U18A team or as pick up players for South Canterbury and Marlborough.

The Under 21 men’s team was unable to make it three in a row, finishing a comfortable second behind a well drilled Northern men’s side. The Under 21 women although beating the eventual winners Auckland, had to settle for second on goal differential.

The Canterbury senior men’s team was unable to defend its national title as it was upset in the semi finals by Manawatu; the team came back well from the disappointing set back to beat Otago for third place. The senior women’s team finished 3rd also after some good performances in a strong competitive tournament.

The Canterbury Cavaliers had a fresher look about them this year under the stewardship of Andrew Hastie. The team achieved its best result since the national title moved to a league format. They only lost to one other team, the eventual winners Wellington. ______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 27 - The performance of the side this year was very encouraging and will provide a fantastic base for next year’s campaign.

The highlight of the representative season this year was undoubtably the Canterbury Cats women’s team who managed to regain the national title for the first time since 1999 A large coaching management team headed by Shirley Haig worked hard with a very competent group of players through a difficult campaign with many players out for large parts of the build up to the season. The Cats put on one of their best shows in the NHL final when they beat Wellington in the final 4-2

All of this year’s representative players, coaches, managers and support crew put in a massive amount of effort. Thank you for all the time and energy that you have put in. Although this year we were not rewarded with a lot of top finishes, the ground-work you put in will go a long way to preparing our teams for future years.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 36 - LINCOLN UNIVERSITY HOCKEY SCHOLARSHIP REPORT

The scholarship scheme has now been very well established in Canterbury. There was another huge pool of applications to choose from this year, which is a great tribute to the success of the programme.

A pre season training programme was set up for the scholars and was very well attended. Individual coaching was also made available for scholars but was perhaps under utilized.

The first year scholars were also taken on a trip to Hanmer, which proved to be a great initiation for them. The scholars met the CHA Board as well and spent a considerable amount of time lost in the Hanmer Forest Park on a mountain biking trip.

A number of scholars were in Canterbury representative teams at senior A and B, U21 and U18 levels. Outstanding achievements were made by Hugh Copland in making the Canterbury Cavaliers men’s side in his first year out of school, as well as being selected for the New Zealand U18 team and more recently the New Zealand Men’s Academy team. Jo Galletly has also racked up a similar list of accolades, making the Canterbury Cats' squad, the New Zealand Indoor team and the NZ Women’s Academy team. Jo’s achievements were recognised in her being named as the Lincoln Hockey Scholar of the year.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 37 - TOURNAMENTS

Canterbury Hockey had an extremely full calendar of tournaments this year and held more National tournaments than any other province in 2002. The benefits of having a twin turf venue have quickly become very evident.

In March the Association hosted the National Masters' Tournament with 40 teams competing from around the country. This is the biggest tournament, team wise, on the New Zealand Hockey calendar and the tournament week came and went without any major problems.

Thanks to Lin Thompson for his excellent work as Tournament Controller for this tournament and his able assistants Sharon Rutherford, Pam Thompson and Robin Cox. The tournament was not the financial success that it should have been, and the Board will address this for next season to make sure that maximum return is made out of tournaments.

In May, the Association saw the return of the NZ Women's Telecom 2GO Blacksticks team onto the new international surface at Porritt Park when the USA team was hosted in the final game of the four game series that was played.

May also saw the Association host the Under 21 Nationals and then in July the National U18 Men’s tournament with a new format in place which saw 24 teams competing for the title

The Association enjoys and maintains an excellent working partnership with the NZIS with regards to tournaments where they supply students to assist with the running of tournaments. Without the support of the NZIS and our own volunteers the Association would simply not be able to run tournaments and we are indebted to them for their assistance.

Nunweek Park again hosted the Secondary Schools tournament in August this year. Unfortunately team numbers were down due to the teachers' strike. From all reports, those teams that attended had a very enjoyable tournament both on and off the field.

2003 sees Canterbury Hockey hosting both the Indoor Nationals in February and the Rankin Cup in August. Planning is already underway for both events.

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 38 - CANTERBURY JUNIOR HOCKEY

The 2002 season saw all Junior hockey teams move off the unpredictable nature of playing on grass to playing each week on an artificial surface of some sort. This meant fairly early starts at some venues, but with more surfaces coming on board for the 2003 season a lot of the 8am starts may be eliminated. Weather wise, we were very lucky with only one or two weeks being disrupted by rain. Other sports relying on grass venues missed a lot more.

ELEVENS The top Primary grade was played solely on Porritt's one and two, under the watchful eye of JMC secretary, Marilyn Downward. Everybody involved in Junior Hockey hugely appreciated the time she voluntarily put in. She will be missed next year. We were able to increase the game time to 25 minute 1/2's, but with 12 girls and 10 boys teams this meant one game a week on a Tuesday night. The skill differences between the top and bottom teams is still huge, so once the split was made 1/2 way through the season, we saw some very close games being played. Some slight alterations to next seasons format will further enhance this grade.

SUPER EIGHTS Super Eights had a much better response from clubs/schools this season. There were a large number of teams all competing at Nunweek Park. This required games to run into the early afternoon. While it is the norm for junior sport to finish around midday, the later finishes were accepted by all. This problem may be alleviated next year with the use of the new St Margarets 1/2 turf that came into being near the end of the season. By having this grade on turf and encouraging coaches to have their players in recognised positions, it will make the step up to Elevens grade easier for those concerned. A number of players from this grade were selected in representative teams.

INTERMEDIATE EIGHTS Intermediate Eights were held at a couple of venues. The boys competed at Burnside High's extended turf, which went very well. The girls started off the season at Rangi, and were full of praise when they got transferred to the larger St Margarets surface. These players benefited greatly from being on turf and their skills increased dramatically throughout the season.

JUNIOR EIGHTS Junior Eights were also at two venues. The girls were based out at Hornby's Wycola Park, while the boys were at the Christchurch Football Clubs courts. Both these venues are marginal in terms of size but seem to be adequate for this age group.

______

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 39 - MINIS Minis held all their early games at St Andrews, two games side by side. These future stars are a joy to watch. Their enthusiasm for getting the ball is such that you could often throw a blanket over all 12 players, the ball and the coaches. In the latter part of the season some of these games shifted to Rangi to avoid the occasional backlog at St Andrews. 2003 should see us fully utilising St Margarets, and with CBHS and Medbury having surfaces of some sort, game times should be improved.

UMPIRING Umpiring still created headaches of various proportions. Elevens teams are required to provide a junior aged umpire. Our thanks go out to those clubs and schools that usually did adhere to this policy. Those that usually didn't (you know who you are) will need to remedy it next season. Umpire development at a Junior level is equally as important as player development, and junior umpires need to be exposed to these top junior games. It is also great to see juniors umpiring the lower grades as it makes them appreciate the umpire's job when they're playing.

REPRESENTATIVE Representative teams were in a rebuilding phase this year, with a lot of young players having to make the step up to the top teams. Their build up was enhanced by entering JMC teams in the Friday night U15 competition. This gave rep squads tough games right from the start and also allowed coaches to see players a lot more for selection purposes. It's something we hope to repeat in 2003. Our Dev. Squad boys had the only real disappointment by being unable to attend the South Island Tournament, but they had a successful two-day, four-team competition in the holidays. Missing out will hopefully make them hungrier for success next season. A huge thank you to the coaches, managers, umpires, parents and players for the time they put in during the rep season.

FINANCE Financially, things ran much smoother this season. There are still a few hurdles to overcome to streamline things in 2003. Adrian Mouldey ran this very well and his experience along with a few changes will ensure costs are kept to a minimum.

This is my last year on JMC, so I'll take this opportunity to thank those I've worked with. Cathy Baker in particular with her endless energy and enthusiasm to get things running even after 20 odd years of running Junior Hockey in Canterbury. She has two children coming up through the ranks so hopefully Junior Hockey will have her expertise to call on for a few years yet.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 41 - CANTERBURY HOCKEY SUPPORTERS’ CLUB

It was a pleasure to be involved with the opening of the new water base turf with hockey arranged for people of all ages. Fun was had by all.

Through the effort and hard work of the committee and club members over the 32 years of our existence, the Supporters have helped Canterbury Hockey in many ways with manpower and money (approx $20,000) and on opening day things were no different. We had the pleasure of handing over a cheque for $30,000 to the Canterbury Hockey Association. This was used to purchase new furniture for the lounge at Porritt Park and the new turf, in exchange for naming rights to the lounge (now called Supporters Club lounge) and other advantages. We look forward to the help of the younger people of Canterbury Hockey supporting us to help support the development of hockey. By joining Supporters for a small cost of $15-00 per year, this provides us with extra money and manpower to ensure the Supporters Club is still here helping long after we have all gone.

Sportsman/Woman of the Year

The awards were presented at Porritt Park between the Cats and the Cavaliers games against Wellington.

Sporstwoman of the Year Ana Morgan of the Avon Hockey Club Sportsman of the Year Chris Clements of the Carlton/Redcliffs Club

Golf

Thanks to the hard working effort of Ron Grimwood and his team, sixty people enjoyed a good breakfast and round of golf. The results were:

HSOB/Burnside Team Cup HSOB/Burnside Hockey Club Thomson Cup Ron Archer HSOB/Burnside Cup Martin Higgins Bob Erikson Memorial Trevor Thomas

Donations

Again this year, we assisted the junior teams with the cost of their transport while they were at tournaments. This was due to the effort of Wayne Lovell and his team that run raffles at O'Shea's Public House. We would like to acknowledge the support from O'Shea's, as without it, we could not support the teams with travelling costs.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 42 - Golden Oldies

It has been a quiet year with no visiting teams to play but a group is being organised to travel to Fiji next year. Lloyd Hughes has organised new playing gear for Supporters, which will be on show later this year.

So let's get out there next year for a funfilled year playing and supporting hockey.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2002 ANNUAL REPORT - 43 - UMPIRES

The 2002 season was the first year in which the Canterbury Umpires' Council functioned. The season commenced with the Council Cup, Super Six weekend and followed with the CHA Competitions, Southern Hockey League as well as various New Zealand National Tournaments.

Coaching has been a big focus by the Council at Senior and Junior levels. Thanks to Colleen Cameron, David Oakley, Andy Paulin, Ted Gilliver, Nikki Rankin and Nigel Iggo. Thanks also to Bruce Nimmo (NZ Practical Examiner). Without the efforts and time of these people the development and growth of the umpires in Canterbury wouldn’t continue.

This year proved difficult for the Appointments/Competitions Officer (Kerry Watson) as the structure of the draw has changed with all Premier games on Saturday and First and Second Grade on Sundays. The difficulties faced by the appointer would be improved by more consultation prior to the start of the season when the draw is set. Special thanks to Kerry Watson and also Ted Gilliver who deputised for a 6 to 8 week period (in July and August).

The Umpires' Council has also started a process to develop a Strategic Plan for Umpiring in Canterbury with the assistance of Sport Canterbury. Two workshops have already been held with another planned before the end of the year. Thank you to all those who have participated so far.

Thanks to our sponsors Just Hockey, Excelsior Hotel and Glenbyre Tavern.
