A female driver had a lucky escape when her car went airborne after smashing into the rear of another vehicle on Cambridge Road. The accident occurred at the entrance to the Mega Centre on Saturday afternoon. Police said the west-bound Mazda 2 ran into the rear of a Holden Cruise turning left into the Mega Centre, sending the Mazda 2 spinning out of control before TC211216CT05 coming to rest on its roof in the middle of CRASH SCENE: Fire Brigade members check out the welfare the road. of the driver of this Mazda 2 that crashed into another vehicle Emergency services rushed to the on Cambridge Road at the weekend. scene. Chief fire officer, Ian Campbell said two appliances, as well as the community sponsored operational support ute attended the accident, along with police and ambulance. Firemen helped the driver of the Mazda 2 out from the bottom of the vehicle and into the hands of ambulance officers once it had been ascertained that she had suffered no serious injuries. Ten fire brigade members then flipped the car back onto its wheels to clear the road. Mr Campbell said the car’s roof was a ‘bit dented’ and all the Christmas presents were safe in the boot. The male driver of the other vehicle was uninjured. Police sergeant, Warren Shaw said the message is to slow down and watch your following distances. “Everyone is rushing at this time of the year to get everything done, it doesn’t give much reaction time. “Police will this summer enforce the 4km/h speed ticket threshold which not only applies on the open road but built up areas too.” Mr Shaw said anyone travelling 55km/ h or faster around town can expect a ticket. A reduced speed tolerance was first introduced on New Zealand roads over Queen's Birthday weekend 2010 and has been used during public holiday periods since. Research shows that when police combined high visibility tactics with a reduced speed threshold during Queen's Birthday weekends, the total number of fatality/injury crashes has reduced as much as 25 per cent. That's 30 people whose lives were saved. Council housing may be sold

Waipa District Council has confirmed it will consider selling its pensioner housing complex on Palmer Street in Te Awamutu to local housing charity, Habitat for Humanity Central North Island (CNI). Habitat already owns and operates Freeman Court, a supported independent living complex next to the Palmer Street units. Today’s in-principle decision means council will proceed with formal consulta- tion around the potential sale. This will take place in March next year. A final decision cannot be made until the consulta- tion process is complete. Mayor Jim Mylchreest said the sale would be a “win-win situation” for existing tenants and for the wider community. “If the sale does go ahead, tenants will be guaranteed a unit for life with rents at or below market rate. If tenants wanted to move, they would be offered a priority place at any of council’s other pensioner housing units, including brand new units to be built in and around Te Awamutu from the proceeds of the sale. “It also means we can increase the district’s pensioner housing stock. Given our district’s aging population, that’s now more important than ever.” The council already has 127 pensioner housing units in its district, housing 138 tenants. Tenants pay market rates for the units — rents are not subsidised by ratepayers. Estimates suggest that the sale of the Palmer Street complex could net the Council $1.7-1.9 million. 6 Te Awamutu Courier Wednesday, December 21, 2016

BY BETHANY TIDY

Waikato families in need will have extra toys and games this Christmas, thanks to The Hits Toy Run and gener- ous locals. A big bus filled with toys pulled up outside the i-Site on Thursday for locals to donate. All last week the bus travelled around Waikato towns collecting toys from generous members of the community. The toys will be donated to St Vincent De Paul Society, which will then distri- bute the toys to famil- ies. Last year about 10,000 toys were don- ated. This year organ- isers are hoping for even more. The Hits broadcaster Blair Dowling says the Toy Run is a good chance to give back to the community. “It’s nice to see people pay it for- ward.” Last year the initiative received an award for the best community campaign TC211216BT01 /WaipaDistrictCouncil at the NZ Radio The Hits presenter Blair Dowling (left) meets Luke East Awards. when The Hits Toy Run bus stopped in Te Awamutu.
