Black Sticks Named for Oceania Olympic Qualifier in Hobart
21 September, 2011 Media release Black Sticks named for Oceania Olympic Qualifier in Hobart The Black Sticks national coaches have named their teams for the 2011 Oceania Olympic Qualifier to be played in Hobart from 6-9 October, 2011. The Oceania region has two Olympic allocations courtesy of world rankings for both men and women and with Fiji having pulled out it gives Australia and New Zealand automatic qualification to the London Olympics. The qualifier will now be a three test series between the two rival teams. The national coaches say the qualifier will be more about getting further test experience against Australia and gaining valuable world ranking points. Black Sticks Women’s coach Mark Hager has named an experienced team, selecting the same 18 players who beat Australia in pool play and went on to win bronze at the 2011 Champions Trophy in July in Amsterdam. “This will be a hard fought series against a top team - there is so much rivalry between these two sides. With us ranked sixth and Australia ranked seventh, we will need to win the series in order to hold our position,” says Hager. Black Sticks Men’s coach Shane McLeod has chosen a very experienced men’s team with players like Phil Burrows, Blair Hopping and Dean Couzins – all who rack up a total 730 test caps. This will be the opportunity to take on world champions Australia, which will be invaluable in their build up to the Champions Trophy being held at North Harbour in early December. “This Olympic qualifier forms a key component of our preparation towards Champions Trophy and will allow us to test our game against a world champion, gold medal team.

Junior Black Sticks Teams Announced
22 September 2011 Media Release Junior Black Sticks teams announced The Under 21 Junior Black Sticks teams have been announced after being put through their paces at a camp held in Papatoetoe this week. The camp was part of Hockey New Zealand’s new Owen G Glenn Future Black Sticks Programme, with Under 21 national coaches Chris Leslie (women) and Grant Edwards (men) selecting the 18 best players from the squads of 30, which were announced in May after the National U21 Tournament. “Key factors that formed the basis of selection, were identifying players that have core skills, are physically capable, are coachable and can follow instructions, as well as having the ability to play at intensity and who can counter attack quickly,” says Under 21’s women’s coach Chris Leslie. Players named in the women’s team include current Black Sticks Amelia Gibson, Samantha Charlton, Julia King and Rhiannon Dennison. They are joined by three up and coming players, midfielder player Shareena Nana and strikers Natasha Cotton and Tara Hall. The women’s team first and only international competition for this year will be in India at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Under-21 Four Nation Women's Hockey Tournament, from 8-12 November. The 18 players named in the Junior Black Sticks Men, include current Black Sticks Squad players Shay Neal, and Kane Russell, along with Development players, midfielder Nick Ross and defender Dwayne Rowsell. Jared Panchia (17), the youngest player in the team and younger brother to Black Sticks player Arun Panchia, has also made the cut.

SENTINEL HOMES TRANS-TASMAN SERIES MEDIA GUIDE The Sentinel Homes Trans-Tasman series features four doubleheaders between the Vantage Black Sticks and the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos in the build-up to the Tokyo Olympics. All eight matches will be played at the new Massey University turf in Palmerston North. The series is possible due to the opening of the trans-Tasman bubble in mid-April, allowing quarantine-free travel between the two countries. The matches will be the first internationals in New Zealand since the FIH Pro League was interrupted by Covid-19 in March last year. The Black Sticks squads for the Tokyo Olympics will be named in the week after the Trans- Tasman series.
