MEDIBANK MELBOURNE MARATHON FESTIVAL 2018 OFFICIAL RESULTS MEDIBANK MELBOURNE MARATHON FESTIVAL OCTOBER 14 The 41st edition of the Medibank Melbourne Marathon Festival witnessed record breaking numbers, 34,734 participants joined together for Australia’s 2018 MEDIBANK largest marathon festival, the event eclipsed the previous highs of 2013 – THANK YOU FOR MELBOURNE MARATHON an outstanding result. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Once again in true Melbourne fashion, the weather played its part with calm almost perfect conditions for the start of the race however as the day went on the temperature rose along with the wind making conditions that PARTICIPATING bit harder for the runners as the race progressed. Congratulations to Liam Adams and Sinead Diver who took victory on the day in the Marathon recording times of 2hr15mins13secs and 2hr25min19secs respectively, the highlight a race record achieved by Sinead along with a $20,000 bonus along the way! I would like to record our sincere appreciation to all of our sponsors, with particular thanks to title sponsor Medibank and long term partners ASICS and Active Feet. In 2018, SriLankan Airlines were back for the second year as our title sponsor of the events largest race the Half Marathon which incidentally sold out. In 2018 we also added the support of GARMIN who powered the events App which took more fabulous steps hosting the full 7hr live feed. The Festival’s key media partners, the Nine Network, Nova and Herald Sun combined to provide significant exposure for the event, whilst on the ground the Festival again delivered more activations, more exhibitors and more entertainment with bands, DJ’s. The event once more was a dominant presence on social media reaching over 37 million people worldwide with our images, stories & engaging content. Thousands of photographs were uploaded by users showcasing their race day experience, making #melbmara the top trending hashtag across the country. The entire festival was streamed live through our YouTube channel, website & mobile app which brought in over 18,000 viewers across the day. Now in its third year; the official Melbourne Marathon app saw a further 25,000 downloads with users spending over 10 minutes tracking their friends & families taking this to a total of over 64,000 users. Over 16,000 hours were spent on the website in the lead up to the event where visitors enjoyed our tailored training, nutrition & performance content. The Medibank Melbourne Marathon solidified its position as the largest Marathon and Half Marathons in Australia and is set to raise in excess of $1.3 million dollars for charity. We also acknowledge CPEC, our official premier charity partner, for their incredible support of our event and the work they do with so many kids in need. In closing I wish to thank and congratulate, all the winners, my team at IMG that deliver this fantastic event, the volunteers who work tirelessly on the front line and behind the scenes, the Spartans, our trusty suppliers and of course last but certainly not least all of our participants who contributed to a wonderful day at the 2018 Medibank Melbourne Marathon. Marcus Gale Event Director 2018 MEDIBANK MELBOURNE MARATHON FESTIVAL RESULTS GUIDE 3 2018 MEDIBANK MELBOURNE MARATHON FESTIVAL SRI LANKAN AIRLINES HALF MARATHON Beautiful cool, still conditions initially greeted runners in the 41st Melbourne Marathon on October 14. Antony Martin became the first 90-year-old to compete in our event. He finished the half marathon in 4hours THE NUMBERS and 12 minutes. The Medibank Marathon numbers trended northwards again with more than 7000 entrants and 6373 finishers – our largest tally since 2014. That made Melbourne the largest marathon in terms of finishers in Australia – for ASICS 10KM AND 5KM RUN the tenth year in a row. The Asics 10km run grew by more than 600 with 7953 finishers, while the 5km event had 3374 finishers. THE RECORDS Sydney’s Harry Summers flew around the Asics 10km circuit in 29.23, while 1500m star Melissa Duncan was first female home in 34.19. Irish born mum Sinead Diver ran the fastest marathon by an Australian on home soil, slashing 46 seconds off Lisa Weightman’s 2013 race record to win in 2:25.19. Her record came with a $20,000 bonus on top of her Martin Cooper (15.12) and Melissa Baster (19.55) were first into the MCG on the new 5km course. $20,000 winning prize. Only three Aussie women have run faster overseas – Benita Willis, Lisa Ondieki (nee O’Dea) and Lisa Weightman.
