E - 1 - iii ­ ZILA ROADS MAINTENANCE AND IMPROVEMENT PROJECT USAID PROJECT NO. 388-0056 PROGRESS REPORT August 1984 1.0 GENERAL Heavy rainfall and accompanying floods continued to hamper work progress in all three Districts during the month of August. Weak­ nesses in the maintenance and construction systems continued to b~' identified. One example was the dispatch of a project supervising engineer for temporary duty elsewhere without first arranging for a substitute supervisor. The result was an unexpected delay in project progress. However, these weak points in the system, once they are identified, can be corrected. All three Districts report that an imp~ovement in Contractor procedures has oeen noticed. This is a positive development. Another positive action was the mitigation of the contractor payment reimbursement bottleneck in Sylhet. Work on material salnpling and testing was able to proceed almost normally, in bpite 0f the adverse weather. The tests reported from all thrt';e la':-urCl':.cries were mostly routine in nature. Both the second-cyc18 in-~ountry training program and the second AIT third-coufI,:ry +:-rai:ll.ng p:-ogram were approved. It is estimated that about 125 te.;hnlr:-i wn wL:.I participate in the second-cycle sessions. The dUl1Ib('r to be nominated to attend the second AIT course will be the ~ams n~ last year - 15. The additional improvements in reporting techniques planned for introduction in this report had to be delayed until next month. The preparation of the baL charts to show both scheduled and achieved progress for all segments of the ZRMI Project is taking more time than anticipated. 2.0 ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT No new developments to report. 1 2 3.0 MAINTENANCE SYSTEM AND SUPERVISION 3.1 General The ZRMI Pro:~ct maintenance work is being handled under the concept of a Pilot Maintenance Scheme initiated aarly in 1984, and which has a separate and independent component in each of the three Districts. The locations of the roads involved in the individual maintenance schemes are shown on the respective District maps as follows o Exhibit I Sylhet District o Exhibit II Rangpur District o Exhibit III Faridpur District Photos of maintenance work in Rangpur District may be found in Appendix A. In the July Monthly Report, it was mentioned thdt bar charts showing scheduled and achieved progress on the~aintenance schemes would be included for all three Districts. Unfortu~ nately, these charts have not yet been prepared hy the Districts, so their inclusion will have to be delayed until the September report. The unseasonable heavy rainfall and accompanying flooding conditions once again were obstacles to significant progress during this reporting period. 3.2 Sylhet District 3.2.1 - Hatimganj - Dhakadakshin Road (Earth Road) Work on this rond had been halted due to depletion of the revolving tund. However, arrangements were made to alleviate the bottleneck in the timely submission of payment vouchers and other documents for review by the Consultant and Subsequent action for reimbursement by USAID. Following this positive development, work was initiated on this project. 3.2.2 Badarghat - Bariberbazar Road (Paved and Earth Road) Aggregates, shingles, and peagravel have been stock­ piled in preparation for the initiation of the main­ tenance work on the paved portion of the road. 3 3.3 Rangpur District 3.3.1 Rangpur - Mahiganj Road Progress was slow on this project due to the com­ bination of adverse weather and lack of foresight on the part of the Zila Parishad Office. (The SAE in charge of the project was dispatched to Dhaka to attend a training course and no arrangements were made for interim supervision). It is expected that the progress will improve when the supervising SAE returns to his post in the near future. 3.3.2 Rangpur - Badarganj Road Last month it was reported that the estimated completion date for this project wa3 August. However, no additional work was noted during this reporting period, so that total accomplishment still stands at 90 percent completion of shoulder improvement work. 3.4 Faridpur District 3.4.1 Rajbari - Baliakandi Road Breaking of bricks for patching work was the only activity observed on this site during the reporting period. It was observed that the first-class bricks stockpiled at the site were not sufficient to complete the replacement of H.B.B. in the damaged areas. Arrangement for one or two additional fire pits would help to expedite the work. 3.4.2 Talma - Nagarkanda Road Activity on this scheme was confined to patch work on the existing bituminous pavement. This operation was being performed without first cleaning the shingles. The brick abutments of one bridge on this road need immediate maintenance. Vegetation which has taken root should be removed. The erosion damage to the embankment that was reported last month was not repaired and now a portion of the pavement has suffered some damage. Such erosion damage should be repaired immediately, or it will 7 get progressively worse. Patching work, shoulder dressing, and brush cleaning has Deen completed from the start of the project to the grade level crossing. 4.0 PREPARATION OF TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS 4.1 Bridges Work continues in the Dhaka office on the preparation of typical plan and superstructure anC foundation sections for bridges of 40-ft span, or less. It is estimated that thi~ work will be =ompleted by mid-September. 5.0 TRAINING 5.1 General 5.1.1 By memo No. S-IV/2R-4/82/20g, dated 20/08/1984, the Local Government Division confirmed that the tour of duty of the Training Advisor had been ex­ tended for a period of six months. 5.1. 2 As can be seen from Exhibit IV, the overall progress of the ZRMI Project Training Program as of the end of August 1984, was about 54 percent, compared to a scheduled progress of 56 percent. 5.2 On-The-Job Training This is an on-going effort on the part of each District RE and the individual members of his staff. At the end of this report1ng period, it is estimated that this activity is about 70 percent complete. 5.2.1 Material Sampling And Testing Th~ activities of c~~ three District Soil Labora­ tories are summari~ed in tabular fashion in Appendix B. 5.2.2 The RE's continue to work closely with the XENl s and their staffs in the planning and programming of a viable maintenance system for rural roads.     Bangladesh Rice J. 21 (2) : 157-172, 2017 Diversity of Cropping Patterns and Land Use Practices in Faridpur Region A B M Mostafizur1*, M A U Zaman1, S M Shahidullah1 and M Nasim1 ABSTRACT The development of agriculture sector largely depends on the reliable and comprehensive statistics of the existing cropping patterns, cropping intensity and crop diversity of a particular area, which will provide guideline to policy makers, researchers, extensionists and development workers. The study was conducted over all 29 upazilas of Faridpur region during 2015-16 using pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire with a view to document the existing cropping patterns, cropping intensity and crop diversity of this area. From the present study it was observed that about 43.23% net cropped area (NCA) was covered by only jute based cropping patterns on the other hand deep water ecosystem occupied about 36.72% of the regional NCA. The most dominant cropping pattern Boro−Fallow− Fallow occupied about 24.40% of NCA with its distribution over 28 out of 29. The second largest area, 6.94% of NCA, was covered by Boro-B. Aman cropping pattern, which was spread out over 23 upazilas. In total 141 cropping patterns were identified under this investigation. The highest number of cropping patterns was identified 44 in Faridpur sadar and the lowest was 12 in Kashiani of Gopalganj and Pangsa of Rajbari. The lowest crop diversity index (CDI) was reported 0.448 in Kotalipara followed by 0.606 in Tungipara of Gopalganj. The highest value of CDI was observed 0.981 in Faridpur sadar followed by 0.977 in Madhukhali of Faridpur.

First page focus on qualitative information and second page on figures) Reporting Sub Office: Jessore Hazard (Flood/Cyclone etc.): Flood Reporting Date: 08.08.07 Reporting Period: 6-7 August 2006 Overall Summary: (Overall synopsis of the situation combining qualitative and quantitative information, disaster trend deteriorating or improving, overall coordination etc.) • Overall situation in Rajbari, Faridpur, Shraitpur, Madariprur and Magura is deteriorating day by day new areas such as Barisal, Gopalganj inaundedted by flood water. • In Shariatpur 72%, Faridpur 53%, Madaripur 42%, Rajbari 27% and Magura 32% of the total areas severely affected by the flood where 29%, 30%, 51%, 52% and 37% of the population affected respectively. • Disaster control room opened in all district and upazila headquarters. District and Upazila disaster management committees are working efficiently and maintained liaison among the other partners. • The District Disaster Management Committee of Madaripur and Shariatpur have generated local fund for relief activities. This fund collected from different professional groups, elite persons and others. • Advisors of central Government already have visited in Rajbari and Faridpur district. Honorable President has planned to visit Shariatpur district today. Prevailing Situation: (Precise and focused description on what occurred, when occurred, how the event has negatively impacted the lives/livelihoods of the populations and WFP beneficiaries, coping capacity, crops, assets, cattle/poultry, infrastructure etc. Please also articulate gender related information i.e. special needs for the women etc.) • Prevailing flood situation created by heavy rainfall in mid-July and upstream water. Basically situation has been severely deteriorating since 1 August 2007.

Since the new development concepts will be introduced to JICA-2, the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) required JICA to execute the special assistance for project implementation (SAPI) for the smooth implementation of new development concepts under JICA-2. The objective of SAPI is to support the project management unit (PMU) established in the LGED for the preparation of operational guidelines of JICA-2. The expected outputs of this SAPI are as follows: Output 1: The operational guidelines of JICA-2 are prepared; Output 2: The first and second batches of subprojects under JICA-2 are selected; Output 3: Training manuals on organizing/strengthening water management cooperative association (WMCA) in JICA-2 are prepared; Output 4: The capacity of project management is improved and project implementation system is in place by conducting orientation and workshop; and Output 5: The local consultants engaged in JICA-2 are selected.

J. 2010;5(2):63-65 Review Article Outbreak Of Nipah Encephalitis In Greater Faridpur District MY Ali1, SA Fattah2, MM Islam3, MA Hossain4, SY Ali5 Abstract Nipah viral encephalitis is one of the fatal re-emerging infections especially in southeast Asia. After its outbreak in Malaysia and Singapore; repeated outbreaks occurred at western part of Bangladesh especially in Faridpur region. Besides, sporadic attacks appear to occur in the country throughout the year. Here two Nipah outbreaks in greater Faridpur district in 2003 and 2004 are described along with brief review on transmission of the virus. Where the history of illness among patients are very much in favour of man to man transmission. Moreover the death of an intern doctor from Nipah encephalitis who was involved in managing such patients in Faridpur Medical College Hospital strongly suggests man to man transmission of this virus. So, aim of this review article to make the health personnel and general people be aware about man to man transmission of virus, so that they can adapt personal protection equipment (PPE) for their protection against this deadly disease. Though Maximum farmers in our country are illiterate and little educated; they have no enough scientific knowledge about land type, soil quality and crop suitability. But they possess vast indigenous knowledge by living in a same environment for a long period of time. They have developed some strategies that helped them to attain a higher degree of satisfaction in farming. So therefore it is very important to explore the farmer’s vernacular knowledge about the land type, soil quality and crop suitability. To address this indigenous knowledge this study investigates the farmer’s vernacular knowledge about the land type, soil quality and crop suitability in Lower Ganga Flood Plain in Bangladesh. The information was collected from one Mouza in Nagarkanda upazila, Faridpur district Lower Ganga Flood Plain in Bangladesh. Qualitative and quantitative both data were used in this study. The data were collected from primary sources (such as questionnaire survey, FGD) and secondary data sources (such as books, journals, and published and unpublished research reports). Data were analyzed by exploratory statistics. Graphs and graph tables were created by MS excel.
