Cart Marking 2019 The Worshipful Company of Carmen CART MARKING 2019 GUILDHALL YARD, CITY OF LONDON WEDNESDAY 17TH JULY, 2019 A WORD FROM THE MASTER Welcome to Cart Marking! It is with great pleasure that I welcome The Rt Hon The Lord Mayor Alderman Peter Estlin, The Lady Mayoress Lindy Estlin, Sheriff Vincent Keaveney and Mrs Amanda Keaveney and Sheriff Liz Green and Mr Peter Green. I also welcome some of my fellow Livery Masters, their partners, Livery Clerks, our Liverymen, Freemen and Apprentices and all other guests and visitors to Cart Marking this year. I’ve been looking forward to saying that for nine years, ever since I first had involvement with the event in 2010 when, in my first year as a Court Assistant, the then Cart Marking Chairman, Commander Bawtree, press ganged me naval style into helping out. The following year he gave me the news that I would be taking over from him as Chairman of the Cart Marking panel and the rest is history. Talk about being keelhauled! My four years in that role and the seven years involvement in total have given me insights into all aspects of the event so when I thank the Cart Marking panel for everything they’ve done this year, I really mean it! In spite of yet more bureaucratic and financial hurdles put in their way, they’ll deliver another spectacular show. Well done Assistant Richard Buswell and the panel. This pageant would not exist if it wasn’t for the enthusiastic vehicle owners and drivers to whom we owe our thanks and appreciation. The increasing scope of congestion charging, Low Emission Zones and Ultra Low Emission Zones make their generous input into this event more challenging each year. In my nine months as Master, Cart Marking must be the event most raised in discussions with other Masters. That said, even recently, when I explain its history, what we do and why we continue the tradition today, many are still unaware or have little idea what it’s all about. However, Guildhall Yard is only so big and can only take so much weight so perhaps our little secret is best kept that way? So perhaps it’s NOT Good to Talk? Enjoy your day with the Carmen and tell everyone about it - yes, It’s Good To Talk! • Reciprocal Clubs
RECIPROCAL CLUBS RECIPROCAL CLUBS Using our reciprocal clubs is easy, opening up a worldwide network of 153 clubs in 36 countries. Most of these clubs have websites which are almost invariably full of good information about their facilities, times of opening, and detailed location. Members should make their own arrangements directly with reciprocal clubs. If a letter of introduction is required please contact the Oxford and Cambridge Club on 020 7321 5176 or email [email protected]. Members should always carry their card of introduction (the membership card issued at the end of January) when visiting reciprocal clubs. Obviously Members should observe the rules and regulations of the host club. Clubs are listed alphabetically by country and then by city. The textual commentary attached to each club entry shows the principal facilities. Members seeking more information are invited to make direct contact with the clubs concerned. Members are reminded that several clubs do levy a guest charge. All bills should be settled directly with the reciprocal club and before leaving. We learn much from the comments of our Members. It would be positively helpful to tell the Secretariat about your experiences in, or your impressions of, any club that you visit. The Club website www.oxfordandcambridgeclub.co.uk will be updated regularly, so please check online for any amendments or additions. At the time of going to press details are correct. Women in the Livery and High Civic Office in the City City of London Women in the Livery and High Civic Office in the City including Lady Masters Association and City Consorts A Research Paper by Erica Stary, LLM, FTII, ATT, TEP Past Master Tax Adviser, Past Master Plumber and Upper Warden Elect Tin Plate Workers alias Wire Workers © Erica Stary January 2021 Women in the Livery and High Civic Office in the City FOREWORD It’s a privilege to be asked to write the foreword for this new paper on Women in the Civic City and Livery. What started as a short research project in lockdown on the Lady Masters Association has turned into a comprehensive and informative paper on how the role of women in City Civic life has evolved since the Middle Ages. It’s easy to forget how quickly the livery has changed in this regard. In 1983, when the first female Lord Mayor, Dame Mary Donaldson was elected, more than half of the livery companies were not open to women on equal terms as men. At the turn of the millennium, more than a quarter still did not allow equal admittance. Now, at long last, in 2020, all City livery companies and guilds accept women on equal terms with men, making this a timely moment for this research paper to be published. As the paper reminds us, women have had a long and significant impact in civic and livery life in the last thousand years. Many Medieval guilds were reliant on the skilled work of women and many buildings only came into the possession of the Livery or the City Corporation, such as the former Bricklayers Hall or Columbia Market, through acquisitions and donations from women.
