Anglo-Saxon England provides no drama on which I can base my own celebratory offering to Peter, but it does have one famous quasi-dramatic text in iElfric's Colloquy. The choice of this text as my subject, then, is partly dictated by the aptness of its form, but it is also chosen because, as I hope to show, it exemplifies the well-considered, imaginative and yet kindly teaching which is as characteristic of Peter as of/Elfric, and which those of us who have worked alongside him at Leeds, teaching Old as well as Middle English, would want to celebrate in this retirement festschrift. My purpose will be to examine iElfric's pedagogic techniques, as witnessed by the copy of the Colloquy preserved in British Library, MS Cotton Tiberius A iii, fols 60v-64v,' considered to be the closest to jElfric's original, and to suggest why, despite its undoubted pedagogic sophistication, it did not achieve the popularity of his Grammar and Glossary. -
Fate and Fortune in Old English Literature Course

Langeslag Time: Tue 8:30–10 Office: SEP 2.306 Room: Theologicum 0.135 Phone: 0551/3919706 Credits: 6 (incl. lecture for some modules) Office hours: Wed 2–3 Prerequisites: one prior course on Old English E-mail: [email protected] Course Description Short of the Bible itself, few texts were as influential on learned medieval thought as Boethius’s Consolation of Philosophy. Small wonder: the events of the era read like living proof of the seemingly capricious upturns and downturns of fortune taken on in the work. Alfred of Wessex came within an inch of losing his kingdom before it grew to encompass all of England; Geoffrey Chaucer survived the Black Death that killed half his compatriots before he reached ten years of age. Both men were so impressed by the sixth-century treatise on fortune that they chose to make it available in English prose. Even so, the late ninth-century Alfredian translation of The Consolation of Philosophy was not England’s first encounter with the concepts of fate, fortune, providence, and free will. By the time of its production, Anglo-Saxons had already spent three centuries integrating Christian thought into the very heart of their culture, which involved the absorption of sophisti- cated views on all these concepts against the background of the transience/eternity dichotomy. Moreover, literary evidence suggests that the Anglo-Saxons had a robust tradition of fate that thrived prior to and/or alongside Christianity. In this sem- inar, we will study a variety of Anglo-Saxon expressions of the degree to which life on earth is predetermined, brutish, and short. -
The Earliest Life of St Dunstan
The Earliest Life of St Dunstan Michael Winterbottom Dunstan, the most important of the tenth-century reformers of the English church, was bom near Glastonbury in Somerset. In 940 he became abbot of the local monastery. After exile under King Eadwig, he was favoured by King Edgar, and was successively bishop of Worcester and of London, be fore becoming archbishop of Canterbury in 960. He died in 988. Much of the material concerning him is collected by William Stubbs in his Memorials o f Saint Dunstan (Rolls Series 63 [1874]). It includes a series of Lives, the ear liest of which is the topic of the present article (Stubbs, 3-52). This is dedi cated to a slightly later archbishop, Ælfric, who held office from 995 to 1005. The author describes himself as ‘omnium extimus sacerdotum B. uilisque Saxonum indigena’. It has been cogently argued by Michael Lapidge1 that ‘B.’ was an Englishman, trained at Glastonbury, who was in Dunstan’s retinue until moving to Liège around 960 and eventually dying there. It is certainly true that the author tells us little or nothing of the events of Dunstan’s archbishopric: a topic to which I shall return in the second part of this paper. For the earlier period, his Life is of the highest importance. 1. The Three Versions B.’s Life is transmitted to us in three manuscripts, none of them written long after the date of authorship. This article situates the dual translation within the broader context of ninth- and tenth-century literary culture, challenging the received view of the two versions as separate projects and arguing instead that the Old English Boethius was conceived and received as a vernacular opus geminatum, or ‘twinned work’. While the opus geminatum and the prosimetrum are generally thought to maintain distinct generic identities, this case study allows for a more capacious understanding of both modes, which I demonstrate were inescapably linked in Anglo-Saxon circles – and which were shaped by a broader aesthetic of prose-verse mixture. Bede’s Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum contains what is undoubtedly the most famous surviving story of an Anglo-Saxon poet, the illiterate cowherd Cædmon, whose divine inspiration is supposed to have initiated a new strain of vernacular, Christian poetry, and who continues to provoke an unending series of questions about Anglo-Saxon poetic communities.1 But Bede’s history also contains a less famous anecdote about a poet, just as illuminating for Anglo-Saxon conceptions of genre and translation. “Contributions” Is the Theme of the Twentieth Biennial Conference of the International Society for the Study of Early Medieval England
“Contributions” is the theme of the twentieth biennial conference of the International Society for the Study of Early Medieval England. Under this broadly conceived and inherently positive rubric, we have accepted papers that focus on individuals, groups, sources, events, artifacts, and phenomena that have contributed and/or continue to contribute to the study of early medieval England. We intend this theme both to highlight and to celebrate the spirit of collaboration, interdisciplinarity, and dialogue between diverse parties that has typified our field at its best. By focusing on contributions—academic and popular, medieval and modern, English and non-English, Anglophone and non-Anglophone—we hope this conference will help to dispel myths of an early medieval England that was exclusionary, isolated, and culturally homogenous and contribute to building a more inclusive and constructively pluralistic field. Due to circumstances surrounding COVID-19, the conference will take place fully online. General format (note that individual venues may deviate from this format) a) Availability beforehand: The ISSEME papers at the Winchester, Montréal and Leiden venues will be made available as 20-min. pre-recorded papers on a platform (e.g., unlisted YouTube clips) a week in advance of the conference, so that attendees can watch these at their own leisure, irrespective of their time zones. The ISSEME papers at the Adelaide venue that are given live will be recorded and made available afterwards. b) On the days of the conference: 20-min. pre-recorded papers will be livestreamed (or, in the case of the Adelaide venue, may be given live), followed by a 10-minute live discussion. -

CUTLER, COLIN J., M.A. Turning Back the Tides: The Anglo-Saxon Vice of Ofermod in Tolkien’s Fall of Arthur. (2016) Directed by Dr. Amy N. Vines. 26 pp. Tolkien’s Fall of Arthur has at its heart the theme of ofermod, a theme which appears throughout Tolkien’s criticism and creative work. In his essay “The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm’s Son,” he argues that the Anglo-Saxon word ofermod in the poem The Battle of Maldon condemns the warband’s leader for an over- reaching pride which places his men in desperate straits. There has since been much ink spilled on the precise meaning of ofermod, with several scholars taking exception to Tolkien’s interpretation of the word. In its survey of the critical debate, this paper conducts a study of the word and its derivatives in various Anglo-Saxon texts, taking the Microfiche Concordance to Old English as its starting point. After weighing in on the critical debate surrounding ofermod, I then trace Tolkien’s creative use of the theme in both his tales of Middle-Earth and his pastiche of “The Battle of Maldon” to establish the patterns of its temptation, attraction, use, and effect in his work before analyzing these same patterns as driving motivations for the characters in The Fall of Arthur. DEPARTMENT OF ANGLO-SAXON, NORSE, AND CELTIC UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE Insular Latin language and literature, 400-1100 ASNC TRIPOS, PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION, PAPER 9 ASNC TRIPOS, PART I, PAPER 9. Course description and scheme of lectures This course studies the Latin literature composed in the British Isles (Ireland, Wales, Anglo- Saxon England) during the period A.D. 400-1100, and surveys the varieties of Latin language used across that geographical and chronological range. The aim of the paper is the acquisition of familiarity with the principal Insular Latin authors and texts, and of the ability to situate these within the literary and historical context of early Insular Culture. At the end of the two-year course, students should also have acquired the ability to read both prose and verse texts in the original Latin, and translate them accurately. Although the emphasis is upon literary and cultural history, there is also scope for more detailed study of specialised aspects of the literature, such as style, rhetoric, and sources. The teaching is focussed on a number of set texts, copies of which are made available to students at the beginning of each year. Classes and lectures University teaching for the course consists of a mix of classes and lectures. The lectures operate on a two-year cycle in Michaelmas Term, alternating between Anglo-Latin literature and Celtic Latin literature (British Latin, Cambro-Latin and Hiberno-Latin), for each of which there will be six lectures, providing a broadly chronological overview, to be attended by both first- and second-year students. In Lent term there will be four lectures on genres and topics within Insular Latin literature for first-years only, followed by four for second-years only. -
