Illuminated Miniature Prefacing a Copy of the Regularis Concordia 213 viii ABSTRACT My dissertation investigates the value of ‘standards’ and ‘standardization’ as tools for historians to interpret social and political dynamics in the Middle Ages. To date, medieval scholarship has utilized these concepts in a relatively unsophisticated manner; standardization has been taken to simply mean the imposition of uniformity. My dissertation uses the work of contemporary engineers and sociologists to problematize this understanding of standardization. I argue that the term, properly employed, signifies a process of consensus, of horizontal rather than hierarchical relationships and of ongoing revision. Further, I contend that standardization is a means and not an end, and that those who create and disseminate standards allow for a substantial degree of diversity, provided the diverse means are all directed at the same end. Anglo-Saxon England of the tenth and eleventh centuries serves as a proving ground for this conception of standardization. As a period that witnessed the coalescing of a single kingdom, uniting a number of hitherto distinct Germanic and Celtic cultures, it would appear to present a number of opportunities to apply the principles I have adduced. I focus on three such subjects. The first is the realm’s coinage. Through an examination of single finds and hoards, as well as the extant legislation, I demonstrate that the creation of a single coinage, accepted throughout the kingdom, was the result not of any single initiative, but an evolution over the course of generations. Similarly, in the case of legal texts, I trace a process in which both the form and content of older codes was continually ix updated to the current prevailing standard. Finally, my examination of attempts to regulate the behavior of monks reveals not a desire to impose an invariable regimen, but a negotiated process that embraced a variety of traditions, old and new, foreign and domestic. x INTRODUCTION THE PURPOSE AND DESIGN OF THIS STUDY This dissertation represents an attempt to interrogate the usefulness of “standardization” as a concept for medievalists. Cornell University 2011 This dissertation, The ‘Bestli’ Outlaw: Wilderness and Exile in Old and Middle English Literature explores the reasons for the survival of the beast-like outlaw, a transgressive figure who highlights tensions in normative definitions of human and natural, which came to represent both the fears and the desires of a people in a state of constant negotiation with the land they inhabited. Although the outlaw’s shelter in the wilderness changed dramatically from the dense and menacing forests of Anglo-Saxon England to the bright, known, and mapped greenwood of the late outlaw romances and ballads, the outlaw remained strongly animalistic, other, and liminal, in strong contrast to premodern notions of what it meant to be human and civilized. I argue that outlaw narratives become particularly popular and poignant at moments of national political and ecological crisis—as they did during the Viking attacks of the Anglo-Saxon period, the epoch of intense natural change following the Norman Conquest, and the beginning of the market revolution at the end of the Middle Ages. Figures like the Anglo-Saxon resistance fighter Hereward, the exiled Marcher lord Fulk Fitz Waryn, and the brutal yet courtly Gamelyn and Robin Hood, represent a lost England imagined as pristine and forested.

    ABSTRACT RICE, CARL ROSS. Diocletian’s “Great Persecutions”: Minority Religions and the Roman Tetrarchy. (Under the direction of Prof. S. Thomas Parker) In the year 303, the Roman Emperor Diocletian and the other members of the Tetrarchy launched a series of persecutions against Christians that is remembered as the most severe, widespread, and systematic persecution in the Church’s history. Around that time, the Tetrarchy also issued a rescript to the Pronconsul of Africa ordering similar persecutory actions against a religious group known as the Manichaeans. At first glance, the Tetrarchy’s actions appear to be the result of tensions between traditional classical paganism and religious groups that were not part of that system. However, when the status of Jewish populations in the Empire is examined, it becomes apparent that the Tetrarchy only persecuted Christians and Manichaeans. This thesis explores the relationship between the Tetrarchy and each of these three minority groups as it attempts to understand the Tetrarchy’s policies towards minority religions. In doing so, this thesis will discuss the relationship between the Roman state and minority religious groups in the era just before the Empire’s formal conversion to Christianity. It is only around certain moments in the various religions’ relationships with the state that the Tetrarchs order violence. Wright Professor Martin Camargo Associate Professor Jim Hansen ABSTRACT “The Assembled Body: Anatomical Enumeration and Embodiment in Anglo- Saxon Devotional Texts” argues that Anglo-Saxon Christians viewed the material body as a potent site for spiritual transformation. This notion finds its fullest expression in the rhetorical scheme of anatomical enumeration which appears across a diverse collection of Old English and Anglo-Latin devotional forms that range from the seventh to eleventh century, such as anonymous personal protective charms and prayers, confessional formulae, monastic execrations, scientific writing and diagrams produced Byrhtferth, as well as a number of Ælfric of Eynsham’s vernacular homilies. This project demonstrates how Anglo-Saxon authors employed such enumerative anatomical catalogs to highlight the vibrancy of the flesh at moments spiritual uncertainty. The choice of this text as my subject, then, is partly dictated by the aptness of its form, but it is also chosen because, as I hope to show, it exemplifies the well-considered, imaginative and yet kindly teaching which is as characteristic of Peter as of/Elfric, and which those of us who have worked alongside him at Leeds, teaching Old as well as Middle English, would want to celebrate in this retirement festschrift. My purpose will be to examine iElfric's pedagogic techniques, as witnessed by the copy of the Colloquy preserved in British Library, MS Cotton Tiberius A iii, fols 60v-64v,' considered to be the closest to jElfric's original, and to suggest why, despite its undoubted pedagogic sophistication, it did not achieve the popularity of his Grammar and Glossary.

    Chapter 16 Wessex and the Reign of Edmund ii Ironside David McDermott Edmund Ironside, the eldest surviving son of Æthelred ii (‘the Unready’), is an often overlooked political figure. This results primarily from the brevity of his reign, which lasted approximately seven months, from 23 April to 30 November 1016. It could also be said that Edmund’s legacy compares unfavourably with those of his forebears. Unlike other Anglo-Saxon Kings of England whose lon- ger reigns and periods of uninterrupted peace gave them opportunities to leg- islate, renovate the currency or reform the Church, Edmund’s brief rule was dominated by the need to quell initial domestic opposition to his rule, and prevent a determined foreign adversary seizing the throne. Edmund conduct- ed his kingship under demanding circumstances and for his resolute, indefati- gable and mostly successful resistance to Cnut, his career deserves to be dis- cussed and his successes acknowledged. Before discussing the importance of Wessex for Edmund Ironside, it is con- structive, at this stage, to clarify what is meant by ‘Wessex’. It is also fitting to use the definition of the region provided by Barbara Yorke. The core shires of Wessex may be reliably regarded as Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, Berk- shire and Hampshire (including the Isle of Wight).1 Following the victory of the West Saxon King Ecgbert at the battle of Ellendun (Wroughton, Wilts.) in 835, the borders of Wessex expanded, with the counties of Kent, Sussex, Surrey and Essex passing from Mercian to West Saxon control.2 Wessex was not the only region with which Edmund was associated, and nor was he the only king from the royal House of Wessex with connections to other regions.

Alcenius had designs on a publication treating of the Anglo-Saxon coins found in Finland, and to this end he compiled a list of the same. One part of this list containing most of the coins of Aethelred, along with a short introduction, was printed already, but owing to some cause or other the issue of the essay was discontinued some time before the death of the author. Although the original list has not now been found fit for use, 'the investigations of Mr. Alcenius have anyhow been of good service for the composition of this paper. The list now appears in a revised and also completed form. Further on in this essay short descriptions of the coin types have been inserted before the list of the coins of each king, and there has been an attempt made to a chronological arrangement of the types. Mr. Alcenius also tried to fix the relative and absolute chronology of the coins of Aethelred, but I regret to say that I could not take the same point of view as he as to the sequence of the types.
