    Austria as a ‘Baroque Nation’. Institutional and media constructions Andreas Nierhaus Paris, 1900 When Alfred Picard, General Commissioner of the World Exhibition in Paris 1900, declared that the national pavilions of the ‘Rue des Nations’ along the river Seine should be erected in each country’s ‘style notoire’, the idea of characterizing a ‘nation’ through the use of a specific historical architectural or artistic style had become a monumental global axiom. Italy was represented by a paraphrase of St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice, Spain chose the look of the Renaissance Alcazar, the United States selected a triumphant beaux-arts architecture, Germany moved into a castle-like building – in the style of the "German Renaissance", of course – and the United Kingdom built a Tudor country house. However, there were considerable doubts about the seriousness and soundness of such a masquerade: ‘Anyone wanting to study national styles at the Quai d' Orsay would fail to come to any appreciable results – just as the archaeologist who wants to collect material for costume design in a mask wardrobe [would equally fail]. Apart from few exceptions, what we find is prettily arranged festive theatrical decoration (...).’1 Whereas the defenders of modernism must have regarded this juxtaposition of styles as symbolic of an eclecticism that had become almost meaningless, both the organizers and the general public seemed very comfortable with the resulting historical spectacle. It was no coincidence that the Austrian Pavilion was given the form of a Baroque castle. (Fig. 1) Its architect Ludwig Baumann assembled meaningful quotes from the buildings of Johann Bernhard and Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach, Lucas von Hildebrandt and Jean Nicolas Jadot in order to combine them into a new neo-Baroque whole.

With a few exceptions, the Baroque hand drawing should not be seen an artwork in its own right. It was primarily a form of preparation and design for another artistic medium. Accordingly, the exhibition is divided by areas of design – for altars, for ceiling and wall paintings, as well as for altar pieces and copper engravings. The works are often striking as individual works in their vivid, spontaneous and modern-seeming strokes.

The exhibition of the Hungarian National Gallery in tribute to her was a merger of two showings. One was about Maulbertsch’ most important pupil, Winterhalder’s work. It was organized by Czech art historians under Lubomir Slavícˇek’s guidance, with the participation of Central European researchers. It was first put on display in Langenargen, the native town of Maulbertsch, and brought to Budapest via Olomouc. The other exhibi- tion was the work of Hungarian art historians led by Anna Jávor. It centred on the activity and works of Maulbertsch and Winterhalder in Hungary, with sig- nificant pieces also loaned from abroad(Fig. 2).1 It was a worthy homage to Klára Garas, who published her monumental monograph of Maulbertsch half a century earlier, in 1960. It was undoubtedly her chef d’oeuvre, which has been the foundation of research into the art of Maulbertsch and his circle and into eighteenth- century Central European painting until today.

On His 300th Birthday Upper Belvedere 25 October 2018 to 3 February 2019 To mark the 300th birthday of Martin Johan Schmidt, also known as ‘Kremser Schmidt’, the Belvedere is dedicating an exhibition to the renowned Baroque painter as part of its IN-SIGHT series. Along with Paul Troger and Franz Anton Maulbertsch, the ‘Austrian Rembrandt’ remains one of the most important exemplars of eighteenth -century art in Central Europe. Works originating from the master make for substantial portion of the Belvedere’s Baroque collection. Stella Rollig, CEO of the Belvedere: ‘The oeuvre of Kremser Schmidt is fascinating because it is characterized by an incredible thematic variety. Apart from his sacred art, the artist’s lesser known late work offers insight into the world of the Baroque period. These particular works are shown special attention in this exhibition.’ The exhibition therefore spans from the sacred in Kremser Schmidt’s art to his extensive graphic and print works, focusing on his late secular and mythological depictions. As a result the artist’s less familiar repertoire is made available, for instance his depictions of satyrs, nymphs, and a Venus with Cupid. Although identities of the early collectors of these paintings can no longer be determined, the exquisitely rendered images most likely adorned the private rooms of respectable Baroque art lovers. Paintings such as the Zahnbrecher (Tooth Puller) or the Sägfeiler (Saw Filer) are of particular interest today.
