Austria as a ‘Baroque Nation’. Institutional and media constructions Andreas Nierhaus Paris, 1900 When Alfred Picard, General Commissioner of the World Exhibition in Paris 1900, declared that the national pavilions of the ‘Rue des Nations’ along the river Seine should be erected in each country’s ‘style notoire’, the idea of characterizing a ‘nation’ through the use of a specific historical architectural or artistic style had become a monumental global axiom. Italy was represented by a paraphrase of St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice, Spain chose the look of the Renaissance Alcazar, the United States selected a triumphant beaux-arts architecture, Germany moved into a castle-like building – in the style of the "German Renaissance", of course – and the United Kingdom built a Tudor country house. However, there were considerable doubts about the seriousness and soundness of such a masquerade: ‘Anyone wanting to study national styles at the Quai d' Orsay would fail to come to any appreciable results – just as the archaeologist who wants to collect material for costume design in a mask wardrobe [would equally fail]. Apart from few exceptions, what we find is prettily arranged festive theatrical decoration (...).’1 Whereas the defenders of modernism must have regarded this juxtaposition of styles as symbolic of an eclecticism that had become almost meaningless, both the organizers and the general public seemed very comfortable with the resulting historical spectacle. It was no coincidence that the Austrian Pavilion was given the form of a Baroque castle. (Fig. 1) Its architect Ludwig Baumann assembled meaningful quotes from the buildings of Johann Bernhard and Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach, Lucas von Hildebrandt and Jean Nicolas Jadot in order to combine them into a new neo-Baroque whole. -

We chose the TU Wien anniversary year 2015 as an opportunity to focus on cooperation between researchers independent of their status and affiliation to an institute. We are glad, that the idea of this platform, which supports young researchers, enhances interdisciplinary work within the TU Wien, motivates cooperation between researchers and companies, and gives our colleagues the possibility to publish their results, was supported and accepted by so many people. More than 80 members of the TU Wien submitted an abstract and want to present their research during the VSS on the 25th and 26th June 2015. We are proud to present the collection of the contributions to the VSS in these proceedings. The collected abstracts provide a small overview of the scientific work that is taking place within the fields Material Science, Simulation, Mechatronics and Energy and Environment. In combination with the talks, the posters, the prototypes and discussions during the VSS, exchange of knowledge and the benefit from the interdisciplinary character of this event are enforced. -

M1928 RECORDS OF THE GERMAN EXTERNAL ASSETS BRANCH OF THE U.S. ALLIED COMMISSION FOR AUSTRIA (USACA) SECTION, 1945–1950 Matthew Olsen prepared the Introduction and arranged these records for microfilming. National Archives and Records Administration Washington, DC 2003 INTRODUCTION On the 132 rolls of this microfilm publication, M1928, are reproduced reports on businesses with German affiliations and information on the organization and operations of the German External Assets Branch of the United States Element, Allied Commission for Austria (USACA) Section, 1945–1950. These records are part of the Records of United States Occupation Headquarters, World War II, Record Group (RG) 260. Background The U.S. Allied Commission for Austria (USACA) Section was responsible for civil affairs and military government administration in the American section (U.S. Zone) of occupied Austria, including the U.S. sector of Vienna. USACA Section constituted the U.S. Element of the Allied Commission for Austria. The four-power occupation administration was established by a U.S., British, French, and Soviet agreement signed July 4, 1945. It was organized concurrently with the establishment of Headquarters, United States Forces Austria (HQ USFA) on July 5, 1945, as a component of the U.S. Forces, European Theater (USFET). The single position of USFA Commanding General and U.S. High Commissioner for Austria was held by Gen. Mark Clark from July 5, 1945, to May 16, 1947, and by Lt. Gen. Geoffrey Keyes from May 17, 1947, to September 19, 1950. USACA Section was abolished following transfer of the U.S. occupation government from military to civilian authority. -

While the German language signified intellectual independence and freedom of self-definition (against one‘s roots) for Kertész before the Holocaust, he notes (based on his engagement with fellow writer Jean Améry) that writing in German created severe difficulties in the post-war era. Using the examples of Hilde Spiel and Friedrich Torberg, this article explores this notion and asks how the loss of language experienced by Holocaust survivors impacted on these two Austrian-Jewish writers. The article argues that, while the works of Spiel and Torberg are haunted by the Shoah, the two writers do not write in the post-Auschwitz language that Kertész delineates in his essays, but are instead shaped by the exile experience of both writers. At the same time though, Kertész‘ concept seems to be haunted by exile, as his reception of Jean Améry‘s works, which form the basis of his linguistic genealogies, shows an inability to integrate the experience of exile. -
