11 9 Kamloops Cenotaph at Memorial Park

The Kamloops Cenotaph was officially dedicated at Memorial Park on May 24, 1925, commemorating those killed· in the First World War from Kamloops and the surrounding region. The Cenotaph initially included an honour roll with the names of the 189 local men who died in the First World War. An additional list of th~ Second World War dead was unveiled in 1947 with the names of the 92 local men killed in WWII. In addition, the Cenotaph includes memorials to the Korean War dead as well as a tribute to Master Cpl. Erin Doyle who was killed in 2008 while serving in Afghanistan.

-The Cenotaph unveiled at Memorial Park in 1925 was designed and built by the M Monument Company of Vancouver. A notable design feature of the Ceno1aph is the inclusion of a clock from the renowned British clockmaker J.W: Benson. The clock was in fact among the earliest proposals for the Kamloops . It was purchased in 1921 by the Ladies' Auxiliary to the Great War Veterans Association for $1,063. The Ladie~· Auxiliary raised funds for the clock over the span of a year having decided that the city was in need of a permanent memorial to those killed in the war. Directly following the end of the First World War, the Great War Veterans Association and the Ladies' Auxiliary to the GWVA collaborated with Col. J. R. Vicars to compile a roll of honor listing the names of the war dead from Kamloops and the surrounding district. The honour roll was set on display in 1919 in the window of the Leland Hotel, one of the most .prominent locations in the city at jhe time. The unveiling of the Kamloops ·Cenotaph six years later was the outcome of the dedicated efforts ()f the Ladies Auxiliary, the GWVA, and City Council.

A public plebiscite was held in 1924 to decide upon the location of the Ceno1aph. After the northeast comer of Battle Street and Second Avenue was chosen for the location of the Cenotaph, local architect W. H. MacAulay was asked to plan the layout of the grounds at ~emorial Hill, today's Memorial Park. His design transformed the hillside into a public park and garden that acts as a living monument and civic space for memorial gatherings honouring the war dead. The park In a way serves as a frame for the. Cenotaph, encouraging us to contemplate the list of names of those killed in war, while overlooking the city the clock bids us to remember.

The Ka~loops··•• · mm~msi!BBlllil!lalll Cenotaph stands strong on Battle Street, right behind the beautiful brick building that is Stuart Wood elementary.

Forty steps northeast of the tall cenotaph sits a small pyramid-shaped cairn, made of dozens and dozens of oval-shaped rocks.

The cairn is dedicated to the city's youth who died in the First World War.

"In memory of the boys of the Kam loops Public and High Schools who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-1918. They shall live for evermore," reads the inscription.

The addition of his name to the cenotaph is the first since the Second Wor1d War.

The ceremony was sombre and respectful, quiet and reflective.

Doyle accompllshed much in his 32 years.

He joined the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry unit in Edmonton after spending three years with the Kamloops-based Rocky Mountain Rangers.

Doyle was the recipient of myriad honours, including the Chief of Defence Staff Commendation, awarded after he twice saved lives following the detonations of improvised explosive devices.

N. the cenotaph ceremony were various dignitaries - Mayor Peter Mllobar, local IVlA. Terry Lake, Kamloops MP Cathy Mcleod - and an assortment of soldiers, active and retired.

And, there were many, many children, kids in grades 3 to ?from Stuart Wood.

The ceremony continued and the sun beat down.

The students were quiet.

Some stared at the cenotaph. Others stared past the memorial and into the adjacent park.

Some bowed their heads and read the four-page program of the dedication. Others bowed their heads and picked at blades of grass. Up front, on a table draped with soft cloth and faclng the many eyes was Doyle, in full uniform and staring back from inside a framed portrait.

Among the third row of students sat a child in a uniform of his time, that of the renowned soccer player, Robinho.

They all know the story of Doyle.

Principal Sydney Griffith noted they did a study unit on The Ufe [And Death] of Erin Doyle,

"First of all, he was a badass," says Isaac Roberge, 13.

"But, even though he wasn't actually a high-ranking officer, he was always there for his members."

"He sounds like a really good person,n says fellow 13-year-old Nathan Connors.

"He helped people survive."

Twelve-year-old Quinlan Smith will soon join the cadets and wants to eventually join the Canadian Army.

''You're helping people with honour," Quinlan replies when asked why he envisions a life in the military.

"You're not just sitting in an office writing cheques."

Isaac and Nathan are also mulling a move into cadets - though neither is sure of landing in a battle zone.

"I would like to join cadets to understand it more," Isaac says, "to get a sense of how it is."

Adds Nathan: "I want to sort of understand what people are going through in the war - but I don't want to go in the war."

What, then, do these boys know of war?

Quinlan's great-grandfather served in the Second World War and is still alive.

Does he talk about his experiences in battle?

"Not really," Quinlan replies. "It's not a pretty thing to talk about."

To whom it may concern,

I am writing this letter on behalf of the Kam loops Regional Heritage Fair Committee in support of the Kamloops Museum and Archives' proposal to beautify and improve the southwest area of Memorial Park located on Battle Street and the Cenotaph itself. i ! ~ The Kamloops Regional Heritage Fair Committee is responsible for planning and executing a Heritage Fair annually for students in and around the Kamloops Thompson area. Every year, upwards of a thousand students participate in some capacity; whether It be submitting a stamp design, participating in opening or closing ceremonies, and/or creating a project of their own. Students work hard to research an element of their heritage, whether it be local, provincial, or national in nature and present it in a meaningful way. Throughout this process, students learn a great deal about the significance of their own personal history and the history of landmarks and buildings, to their lives and to Kamloops, to British Columbia, and to Canada as a whole. In fact, the Cenotaph itself has been the subject of more than one Heritage Fair project over the years.

During the Fair, the Cenotaph is often a site we visit as a part of a Heritage Walk of Kamloops, and provides students with the opportunity to learn about and show respect for the local soldiers who have died in war, including most ·recently Master Cpl. Erin Doyle, who died in Afghanistan in 2008. It is also a venue where many students from our school district show their respect to all Canadian soldiers, past and present, on Remembrance Day every year. Memorial Park is also a very popular meeting place in the summer, which is especially true on Saturday mornings when the Farmers' Market is taking place.

Memorial Park and the Cenotaph, unfortunately, is showing signs of wear. The proposal being submitted by the Kamloops Museum and Archives hopes to improve this historical site by installing a wheelchair ramp to ensure accessibility to everyone, by improving lighting to make it a safer place in the evening, by adding plants and vegetation to add to the visual aesthetics of the monument, by repairing and enhancing the existing fencing and stairs, by adding benches, by repairing the clocks so that all 4 of them function, and by increasing the flat grassy space to the north of the tower, which would allow for larger gatherings.

Sincerely,

Susie Mabee Kamloops Thompson Regional Heritage Committee Chairperson

Re: Battle Street Cenotaph Restoration Project

Dear Ms. Baker:.

Please accept this letter as support for your Battle Street Cenotaph Restoration Project. The Royal Canadian Legion fully supports the efforts of the City of Kam loops in this Project.

Cenotaphs are very important to the memory of those Canadians that gave their lives in the service of Canada, and the display of is one way of ensuring the people of Kamloops remember the men and women who served. To have a Cenotaph that is in poor repair or in a deteriorated condition is a slight to their memory.

Kamloops Legion will undertake to assist this Project in any·way It can, including financial assistance or people fo assist with some of the labour.

On behalf of the Royal Canadian Legion, thank you for your efforts.towards this Project.

Yours sincerely,

LETIER OF SUPPORT BA'ITLE STREET MONUMENT RESTORATION

Kamloops' original cenotaph 011 Battle Street is a magnificent monument, one of the finest such monuments of the post-World War l era. With the recent addition to the cenotaph of Master Corporal Erin Doyle's name as a fallen Afghanistan veteran, the cenotaph now has even greater continuity between generations that will help it to endure as a location of well known meaning and. respect. This being said the monument is in need of maintenance and could be enhanced with renovations. As a member of the committee .of concerned organizations and individuals who over the past year have put together an initial plan for restoration of the monument, I see the plan as sufficiently flexible to be completed in stages, to be scaled up or down depending on available funding and support.

Speaking on behalf of the Rocky Mountain Rangers as a Unit, in addition to our standing offer of support in the form of volunteer soldier labour, we are willing to donate $500 from Unit Non-Public Funds towards this project. If additional financial fundraising is required we will endeavour to assist in that work. Regarding volunteer work and funding from the Rocky Mountain Ranger Association Kamloops Branch. Rocky Mountain Ranger Museum, and the local Rocky Mountain Ranger cadet corps, while I am confident based on discussions with individuals that they will support, I will leave it to the respective representatives of those affiliated organizations to speak regarding details of their support. 1(0, Kevi yler, Lieu e ant-Colonel, Commanding Officer, Phone: (250) 851-4885

Re: Kam.loops Museum & Archives - applica1ion for Cenotaph /Monument Restoration Program-Kamloops Memorial Park

The Kamloops Heritage Commission is in full support of the Kamloops Museum & Archives application for :funding under the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program initiated by veterans Affairs Canada. Memorial Park has tremendous heritage value for the City of Kamloops. After years of fund raising by the Women's Auxiliary to the Canadian Legion the original World War I cenotaph was first dedicated in 1925. The cenotaph was designed by a local architect and constructed out of imported granite. It is unique as it one of two cenotaphs in all of Canada that incorporated a clock, in this case, one for each of the four sides. The cenotaph's first plaque honoured the 189 K.amloops men who died in World War I and the planting of trees in the park, a parade and a ceremony marked its opening. After World War II the 92 Kamloops men who died in action were listed on a plaque and after the Korean War another plaque was added. Last year a plaque was installed honouring Master Corporal Erin Doyle who died in the Afghanistan War. In this manner the cenotaph bas great symbolic meaning for all those who served Canada during wartime. This is definitely an important project especially in this centenary year of World War I. The restorative work outlined by the Museum in its application is necessary to bring the cenotaph back to its original state. The repair ofthe clocks is long overdue and new decorative fencing would greatly add tO its visual appeal. Improvements such as the landscape features of bushes and grasses will also add to the attractiveness ofthe park. Wheelchair access and a better stairway entry are other important aspects ofthe proposal that will bring Memorial Park up to modern standards. The inclusion ofbenches will make the cenotaph an area for contemplative reflection on the impact ofthe wars and the men who served their country. h1 summary, the Ka.mloops Heritage Connnission feels that lhe Memorial Park project is an extremely worthwhile and timely proposal. Re: Letter of Support for the Memorial Park Upgrade

To whom it may concern:

The Kamloops Communities in Bloom Society is proud to call the Kamloops Museum & Archives a longtime partner. Together we have worked tirelessly on the improvement and beautification of the community we call home, Kamloops. More than just flowers, Kamloops Communities in Bloom focuses on volunteerism, citizenship and beautification. Part of this work centers around the history of our area and sharing it with the community.

Just last year we worked jointly on sharing the story of our bicentennial. We are lucky to live in such a unique area and for the last 200 years have worked cooperatively with the TK'emlups te Secwepemc. In our bicentennial year, the Kamloops Museum planned a number of huge, community wide events including a River Rendezvous which re-enacted a historic canoe meet up between Mayor, Council and Chief, Council and Elders. It was fascinating and its depth and scope really showed what the Kamloops Museum and its team was capable of.

In addition to the many programs and projects they embark on, the Kamloops Museum engages members of the community from all facets of life through their exhibits, classes, workshops and tours. They are instrumental in spreading historical knowledge and culture in our city.

Kamloops Communities in Bloom is proud to call the Kamloops Museum a partner. We wholly support their applications for funding to complete beautification and work on Memorial Park and the Cenotaph and couldn't think of a better organization to take on this challenge.

Re: Letter of Support for the Memorial Park Upgrade

To whom it may concern:

The Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association has worked in partnership with the Kamloops Museum for the last few years on a number of events and community initiatives. The Kamloops Museum plays a vital role in the livelihood and landscape of the Kamloops community. They open up pathways of thought about our past and the role of heritage and culture in our society.

We choose to work with the Kamloops Museum because of their inclusive mandate and open policies. They are of course a museum and city organization, but they are one that always goes above and beyond and reaches out to bring education and knowledge to the public, opening eyes along the way. They do not believe that access to learning and education should come with a price, which opens this world up to everyone including those with multiple barriers who would not otherwise get a chance to participate.

We have found them to be an extraordinary organization to partner with and their work brirtgs immeasurable benefits to Downtown Kamloops and the city as a whole. For these reasons and more, the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association is in full support of the Kamloops Museum's application for funding to support their efforts in beautifying and improving Memorial Park and the Cenotaph itself located within it

Memorial Park and this cenotaph has a long history within Kamloops. It has been a staple in the dty and for many years was 'the place' groups gathered for Remembrance Day ceremonies and other memorials. It is hoped that with these changes, the park and its cenotaph can once again become the great place of remembrance it once was.

The KCBIA shares the goals of the Kam loops Museum in supporting this goal. All of their past programs, events and projects have been very well received and we welcome what's to come.

216 The Memorial Hill Cenotaph on Battle Street in Kamloops, BC is located beside Stuart Wood Elementary School.

The grade 7 students wrote letters of suppo.rt for this project and are hoping we are successful in the grant application process.

217 Dear Veterans Affair

Our Cenotaph is important to the community because it reminds us of the soldiers of Kamloops who died in the past. I, as a student of Stuart Wood, · believe that the park should be respectfully improved and fixed to honour the people who fought for our country. The Cenotaph was built in 1925 and it has been 100 years from th.en, and as an anniversary gift for our beloved · Cenotaph, it should be improved with park benches, community garbage · disposal, fresh flowers for every summer, and the clock should be fixed so it can work for the first time in years.

If you are willing to donate money to a growing community to improve the memory of the Cenotaph, please do, because a lot of people love the Cenotaph and the park and want to improve the appearance of the lovely place where we can be silent and remember children and men who died in the awful war that cost our country millions of lives.

Stuart Wood is a big part of the Cenotaph, many children of this school have died in the war and their names where placed on the Cenotaph. In memory we ask you to represent the children who rode into war and did not return. As a student of this school I want to improve the park not only to honour people but to create a peaceful place for old folks and. family members to enjoy a walk in a community park without being watchful of minefields or bombs from over head.

We ask you to bring back the life of these people in our hearts, and revive the memories of these unforgettable people who defended our lives with great bravery and honour. So please, donate to improve our precious Cenotaph.

-Simerely .Laretfo

218 Dear Veterans Affair.

Our community is trying to bring the cenotaph back to life to help and get the community to stop and remember the people who fought in the war's.

The park is a little run down and that is why our community is looking

for a grant of twenty five thousand dollars it would not only be the town

community but the Stuart Wood community that thanks you as well.

Sincerely.

Josh from Stuart Wood

219 Dear Veterans Affairs,

Ifs been I 00 entire years since the first World War, and I think we should honour our soldiers by upgrading the Cenotaph in our Memorial Park.

If we were to get that $25,000 dollar reward, we can restore the monument and put proper fencing and decorations. This would be a great year to do it, because it's been a whole century. Also, our class has a g-eat view of the Cenotaph out of the window, the only problem is there are a few trees in the way. So if we were to restore it and clear out the area, it would look beautiful and nice with all of the bright spotlights and flowers. This is why I think you should donate the money to us, because our community is special.

Not many schools have the chance to say that they're just 20 yards away from the most beautiful monument built in town. Think about our veterans. They were sent out and killed for our freedom. We should honour them in a better surrounding. They deserve it. We've even been told some of our veterans went to this very school before the World War.·

Another reason to fix the Cenotaph is because wheelchair accessed Veterans aren't currently able to get to the monument because there are only stairs leading to it. So if you are giving away this money, we would greatly appreciate it if you donated it to us.

· Sincerely,

Carter, a Stuart Wood Studen~

220 Dear Veteran Affairs:

I heard about this grant your handing out for $25,000 dollars. All the students and I at Stuart Wood elementary believe that we should get the grant to fix-up our memoriql cenotaph .

. The first reason why you should give us the grant is because lots of the soldiers that are on the cenotaph went to our school and we could honour them by giving our cenotaph a very very good fixer upper. Plus this is very important to the city of Kamloops. We would like to hav~ a new park where we can e~oy remembrance day with our family and where we can have a nice moment of silence in peace with a nice area. This his why we Kamloops people deserve that grant.

Thank you,

Daniel a Stuart Wood student

221 Dear Veterans Affairs:

I am a Grade seven student at Stuart Wood elementary school . We believe that the Cenotaph is a great part ofKamloops history. The Cenotaph is special to Stuart wood because some of the Veterans from Kamloops attended Stuart Wood. Also the Cenotaph is right beside our school. The Cenotaph honours our Fallen soldiers and we would like to fix a few things in Memorial park.

First of all the four clocks on the Cenotaph haven't worked for many years . We need more garbage & recycling cans in the park because there aren't many garbage cans or recycling so many people just litter. There should be more benches so people can enjoy the beauty of the park and honour our fallen soldiers . There are many repairs to be made so please consider giving a grant to Kamloops memorial park cenotaph .

Many Veterans still visit the park today to pay respect to soldiers who risked and lost there lives for our freedom . The park is a reminder of loss and victory and for the many brave men who fought in the first world war , the second world war & finally the last world war . We would like this grant to improve many things in Kamloops memorial park . With the grant we could make the park more presentable and remind everyone that our freedom was protected by our many soldiers .

Memorial park is located on battle street . Battle street was named after the long battle our soldiers faced in war . I think we deserve this grant because memorial park is becoming scattered with litter not to many people visit memorial park . We should help repair the park to remember the legacy our brave soldiers left us . This grant would help let the memory live on .

Our community and school would greatly appreciate this grant . We would put the money towards fixing the clocks , get new benches , waste bins and fix cement path.ways . So please consider Memorial park's Cenotaph for the grant . It would be greatly appreciated .

Sincerely,

Tia, a Stuart Wood student

222 Dear Veteran Affairs;

My name is Liam and I represent the entire schooi when I say this : Our park and cenotaph need to be improved.

Stuart Wood Elementary school and the city of . Kamloops has had the cenotaph for a long time and it needs more things. For example, lots of the veterans can't access the cenotaph because it isn't wheelchair safe. A helpful thing to do would be to make the area around the cenotaph larger, the veterans of Kamloops would much appreciate that.

With the money, We could put in some park benches near the cenotaph and perhaps restore some of the engraving. Many people walk by the Kamloops cenotaph and wish that some more attachments would be added around the area.

Sincerely,

Liam

223 Dear Veterans Affairs:

Hi my name is Lane Lewis. I am a student at Stuart Wood Elementary School. I am writing this letter for a grant to go towards the Kamloops Cenotaph at Memorial Park.

I think we should be given the grant because we need to remember our History and Respect it. I would like to see better things at Kamloops cenotaph Memorial Park like Canons, benches, and lights to see the Memorial tower. We need to repair the clocks so they can work again. We also need to make it bigger for the veterans that are now in wheel chairs. We should make it look like it did 100 years ago.

Sincerely,

Lane, Stuart wood Elementary School

224 Dear Veterans Affairs

My name is Zoe, I'm a student ofStuart Wood Elementary School I believe the cenotaph should be repaired because there needs to be more room for more people to honour the ones who fought in the war. There can be more decorations lik~ a couple more benches and flowers to make it prettier.

The cenotaph is a big part ofour community and a lot of - people would appreciate it ifwe fixed it. The clock should be fixed and expand around the cenotaph for a bigger walkway for people with wheel chairs and to place lots ofreefs around the cenotaph in- honour ofthe ones that fought in the war for peace in 1925 and 1939.

The Memorial Park is a great place to relax, it is peaceful and it is a great place to look at all the fl.owers, and to look at all the names on the plaques from the soldiers.

Sincerely,

Zoe, student of Stu.art Wood Elementary School

225 Dear Veterans Affairs

The Kamloops memorial was dedicated on May 24, 1925 at memorial park in honour of the soldiers who died in World War I. It was updated in 1947 to include deaths of World War II. The most recent update included a tribute to Erin Doyle. As of this year, it has been 100 years since World War I. Because of this occasion, it should get an upgrade.

We need to fix the clock inside it, which has not worked for decades. We need to put more things inside the rather bland memorial park with not much in it We need benches, maybe a water fountain, and something to make Memorial park more memorable. We think it is important because many of the people on the very memorial went to this very school, Stuart wood elementary. We see it every day from the 61h/rpb grade classroom. It is possible that even some people at the school at this very moment might have relatives on the memorial. We need to restore it to its former glory, after many years of being built, and 100 years after the war, it deserves to be more memorable.

Sincerely,

Coby of Stuart Wood Elementary, Kamloops.

226 Dear Veterans Affairs

Myself, as well as my school and my community believe in our cenotaph as well as Memorial park in which it resides should be looked after as well as upgraded.

The city of Kamloops , as well as my school Stuart Wood elementary believe our community should get this grant. Our community has chosen this specific year to upgrade our cenotaph as this is one hundred years from when the first world war started.

My motivation. My specific motivation to write this letter of support , is the fact that some of the soldiers whose names are on the cenotaph went to the same school that I do today when I am writing this . The fact that they walked the halls I do ,that they might have learned in the very .same classroom that they ran in the same fields as me as well as my piers do today. This motivates me gives and me reason to write this very letter you are currently reading. It inspires me to honour those who were lost·during the Korean war the second world war as well as the first.

Our ideas. The community of Kam.loops has come up with a few ideas . A few of the ideas that I have mentioned are. To have better new fencing, to make sure that the clock faces work and expanding the amount of concrete around the cenotaph.

In conclusion my community believes, my school believes, and I believe in upgrading our cenotaph with the money this grant would give us

Sincerely Caleb a Stuart Wood student

227 Dear, Veterans Affairs

This is a Stuart Wood Elementary student, I'm here to tell you some reasons why we not only want but need the money for fixing the Cenotaph on battle street.

Reason# 1- We would appreciate it and we need it to fix up the Cenotaph and park because its in bad shape and we want more park benches.

Reason#2- The plague is to remember all the soldiers and students that fought in the war.

Reason#3- Exactly 100 years ago the first world war started and all the soldiers that died in the war got there name on the Cenotaph. This year would be a great year to honour the Cenotaph upgrade.

These are some reasons why we need the money.

Thank You

Sincerely, Brenden. C

228 Dear Veteran Affair,

I think that upgrading the memorial park is an excellent idea. There's so many things that could be nicer and better. A lot of people walk past it everyday but it's not in the best condition. Having some benches and the four clocks on the cenotaph working would be great. That's why we need the $25,000. If we were going to upgrade this, this would be the year to do it because the first war started exactly 100 years ago.

All of this would be amazing and I think that the men and women who fought in the war deserve a more upgraded Memorial Park. Years to come we will be able to look back at the park and just think of all the people who fought for us in the war and can enjoy the park even more. That is if we do get this money to fix our Memorial Park a little bit. Which is why we deserve the money for our city.

Sincerely,

Lynda

230 Dear, Veterans Affairs

My name is Tim and I am a 12 year old student at Stuart Wood Elementary. I am writing this letter in support of the people of Kamloops in the hopes of restoring the cenotaph in Memorial park to its original beauty.

We will need twenty five thousand dollars to restore it and make it a very enjoyable place for us and all the veterans in kamloops. Right now the park is full of trash and looks very displeasing. We need the money also because it is honouring all of the Kamloopsians who fought for our freedom and now have passed on.

Thank you

Sincerely,

Timmy

231 Dear Veterans Affairs,

In May 1925 the city ofKamloops built a cenotaph in memory of the soldiers and veterans who died in war. Then in the 1940's they added more names to remember.

The Kamloops Cenotaph is currently located at the Kamloops Memorial Park on Battle Street. Beside the cenotaph is Stuart Wood Elementry and it is still standing and is currently still in use. It was also is used back in the 1900's where most of the soldiers and veterans went to school ..

The Memorial Park and Kamlops Cenotaph could use a few more things to honor our soldiers and veterans. If we get this money we are planning to add four more park benches with cement platforms, a bigger cement platform around the cenotaph itself so that way wheelchairs can get around more easily, also some new fencing instead of the metal poles we have now and a couple of lamp post to make it brighter for people who walk around at night.

If we were to get this money we will be very greatful for your support to help make Kamloops Memorial Park and Cenotaph a better and beautiful place

Sincerely, Paige a student at Stuart Wood Elementry

232 Dear Veteran Affairs:

My school and my community is fund raising to rebuild and redecorate the Official Kamloops Cenotaph at Memorial Park located on Battle street.

The school that I go to is Stuart Wood elementary which was built in 1907. Some of the veterans from Kamloops went to this school before they went to WWl, WVV2, AFGHANISTAN WAR and the KOREAN WAR. All of the dead veterans that came from Kamloops have there name printed on it.

We are hoping to upgrade the Cenotaph so more people can fit around it. We also want to add in four more park benches, flowers, a new fence and more room for people to fit in with wheelchairs and crutches.

Our town can't really do that without money to support and buy all of the upgrades, so the community museum entered into. a contest to get $25,000 for the Cenotaph updates. The reason that we want to do the upgrade this year is because WWl started in 1914 and it has been 100 years since then. We hope that we will get the honour to get the money to make these updates on the Cenotaph.

Sincerely,

Angie, a Stuart Wood Elementary Student

233 Dear Veterans Affairs:

The Kamloops Museum wants $25000 dollars for the cenotaph. Why?, Because the park is a run down place that no one wants to go to. If we got this money we would put a fence around the park some cement around the cenotaph, benches with cement under them , and some garbage cans.

Everyday we look out the window of Stuart Wood at a lonely cenotaph on a dead grass hill with bottles everywhere. On the cenotaph are names of soldiers that went to our school. Don't you think they deserve a nicer park?

Sincerely,

Nik, a Stuart wood

234 Dear Veterans Affairs,

Our school Stuart Wood Elementary and the city of Kamloops would very much appreciate money to fix and restore our Cenotaph.

Our school has been here for even longer than the Cenotaph Park. The school is located on Battle Street and some of the soldiers on the cenotaph went to Stuart Wood as children.

I can see the cenotaph out of our classroom window. We would like benches for the Cenotaph Park and also we would like to expand the concrete platform so that the veterans in wheel chairs can see more of the cenotaph. This year is the hundredth anniversary for the start of the First World War, which is why this would be the best year to do this.

Thank.you Sincerely, Adam, Stuart Wood Elementary student

235 Dear Veterans Affair:

I support the idea of upgrading the Memorial Park. The soldiers and veterans should be remembered in a much nicer surrounding. If the Veterans Affairs got the 25,000 dollars, they could really make the park a much nicer, more beautiful place. The cenotaph clock could be fixed , also the landscaping could be a lot better. They could add in some park benches and add some more things that would really make it stand out and become "'.'hat they want it to be.

I agree that it is a very good idea to do this this year because from this point back, the WWI started one hundred years ago. The people who have passed have their names on the cenotaph, most of them have gone to Stuart Wood Elementary School. Upgrading the park would show much more respect and honour.

The Memorial park is supposed to be a much more relaxing, and peaceful place so that we can remember the people who fought for us. I think we should show more respect to the friends and family who have had a loss of someone is the. war if we .fixed it up. If we. were to get this money it would qefinitely make the Memorial Park and the Cenotaph a much nicer, and brighter place to remember who fought for us .

Sincerely, Emma.

236 Dear Veterans Affairs:

This is a student from Stuart Wood Elemtary. I am writing a letter to tell whom it may concerns that we need the money so we can fix the cenotaph. I think that if the Cenotaph gets restored it will look very nice and the veterans will be very appreciative.I am writing this letter in support of the people ofKamloops. We hope that the cenotaph in Memorial park will be restored. We will need 25 thousand dollars to restore the Cenotaph.

Sincerely, Adam .W from Stuart Wood

237 Dear, Veterans Affairs I, William Isaac Vasquez, would appreciate the upgrading of Memorial Park, which cannot happen without the assistance of the Veteran Affairs, the Kamloops City and Archives along with the city and other parties interested in the upgrading of this fme monument we need your $25 000 grant. This money would allow us to make the monument wheelchair safe and fix the broken clocks. Currently, the monument is quite worn down and it needs refurbishing. I, along with many other Kamloopians would appreciate the upgrades.

Thank you for your time. Sincerely, William ISaac Vasquez, Stuart Wood Elementary

239 Dear Veterans Affairs,

It would a be great thing if the money would go to the Kamloops Museum and Archives to use for upgrading and fixing the Cenotaph in Memorial Park.

Many brave soldiers from Kamloops died fighting for our country, Canada. In World War One, 189 local men. In World War Two, 92. The Cenotaph also includes the dead from the Korean War and Master Corporal Erin Doyle. All of these brave men gave their lives fighting in the wars, and they should be honoured.

The Cenotaph was built in· 1925 by the Art Monument Company of Vancouver, at Memorial Hill, which is now Memorial Park. The Cenotaph was built at the Northeast corner of Battle Street and 2nd Avenue, near the Stuart Wood Elementary School. The school was built in 1907, and is even older than the Cenotaph. Many local soldiers who died in the wars attended Stuart Wood Elementacy School.

A notable thing on the Cenotaph is the clock added and created by the renowned British clockmaker J. W. Benson. The clock was one of the first few things to be . added, and was bought in 1921 by the Ladies' Auxiliary for $1,063. It is one of the things which is no longer working and will b~ fixed if the money goes to the Kamloops Museum and Archives.

After the First World War, the Great War Veterans Association collaborated with Colonel J.R Vicars to put together a roll of honour for the dead that originated from Kamloops or the district.

It would be a great thing if the money was given to the Kamloops Museum and · Archives, so we could further honour the soldiers who gave their lives in the wars. Sincerely,

Tony, a Stuart Wood Student
