Restore Memorial Hill Park Cenotaph

Canada's Tournament Capital Restore Memorial Hill Park Cenotaph Prepared by: Julia Cyr Museum Supervisor 115 Restore Memorial Hill Cenotaph Page 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Kamloops, BC Cenotaph was erected in 1925 to commemorate local WWI soldiers who had lost their lives. It was built of grey BC granite on a concrete pad and included a four-face clock. The surrounding Memorial Hill Park was planted with trees and lawn as a living reminder of the soldiers. Plaques with WWII names were added in 1947. A bronze plaque acknowledging the Korean War was added in 1955 and in 2012, the name of a local Afghanistan War casualty was added. Four electric lamp posts and two WWI canons were removed and used in efforts with WWII. The clocks failed to work properly and all attempts to repair them have been unsuccessful. Furthermore, a pipe railing was added around the cenotaph. The concrete pad was occasionally patched but not replaced. A permanent flag pole was erected in the 1960's. In 1922, a stone cairn was erected down the slope from the cenotaph by the students of Stuart Wood Elementary School, located beside the cenotaph and park. The majority of the 192 soldiers who died in WWI attended that school. The entire 4 acre site and its components are now maintained by the City of Kamloops. 1. The Cenotaph initially included an honour roll with the names of the 189 local men who died in the First World War. An additional list of th~ Second World War dead was unveiled in 1947 with the names of the 92 local men killed in WWII. In addition, the Cenotaph includes memorials to the Korean War dead as well as a tribute to Master Cpl. Erin Doyle who was killed in 2008 while serving in Afghanistan. -The Cenotaph unveiled at Memorial Park in 1925 was designed and built by the M Monument Company of Vancouver. A notable design feature of the Ceno1aph is the inclusion of a clock from the renowned British clockmaker J.W: Benson. The clock was in fact among the earliest proposals for the Kamloops war memorial. It was purchased in 1921 by the Ladies' Auxiliary to the Great War Veterans Association for $1,063. The Ladie~· Auxiliary raised funds for the clock over the span of a year having decided that the city was in need of a permanent memorial to those killed in the war. Directly following the end of the First World War, the Great War Veterans Association and the Ladies' Auxiliary to the GWVA collaborated with Col. J. R. Vicars to compile a roll of honor listing the names of the war dead from Kamloops and the surrounding district. The honour roll was set on display in 1919 in the window of the Leland Hotel, one of the most .prominent locations in the city at jhe time. The unveiling of the Kamloops ·Cenotaph six years later was the outcome of the dedicated efforts ()f the Ladies Auxiliary, the GWVA, and City Council. A public plebiscite was held in 1924 to decide upon the location of the Ceno1aph. After the northeast comer of Battle Street and Second Avenue was chosen for the location of the Cenotaph, local architect W. H. MacAulay was asked to plan the layout of the grounds at ~emorial Hill, today's Memorial Park. His design transformed the hillside into a public park and garden that acts as a living monument and civic space for memorial gatherings honouring the war dead. The park In a way serves as a frame for the. Cenotaph, encouraging us to contemplate the list of names of those killed in war, while overlooking the city the clock bids us to remember. 120 > •.
