DOSBARTH 3/4M ACTIVITIES Wednesday 27th January 2021

Our topic this week is: The Royal Family

English: Read the information about the Royal Family below and then answer the questions. Don’t forget to answer using full sentences, remembering capital letters and full stops.

The Head of the Royal Family is Queen Elizabeth II, whose full name is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor. She was born on the 21st April 1926 in London. Elizabeth’s father, King George VI (6th) was never in the direct line of succession, meaning it was unlikely he or his children would ever actually become kings or queens. However, King George’s older brother, Edward VIII (8th) gave up (abdicated) his as King after only 11 months so that he could marry, meaning the throne went to Elizabeth’s father, as he was second in line.

Elizabeth did not attend school, instead being privately educated at home. She served in the Second World War as a mechanic and military truck driver – she is currently the only female member of the Royal Family to have served in the Army.

Elizabeth had a younger , Margaret, Countess of Snowdon (1930-2002). Elizabeth married Prince Philip, of Edinburgh in 1947. Prince Philip was born into the Greek and Danish royal families, but his family were banished from Greece when he was very young.

Together, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip have four children: Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward. As Prince Charles is her eldest son, he will become King when Queen Elizabeth either abdicates or dies. If she were to retire, Charles would become Prince Regent, but not King. After Charles, the throne is expected to go to Prince William and Duchess Catherine (who will be known as King William and Queen Consort Catherine), and then to their eldest child, Prince George.

Questions:

1. What is Queen Elizabeth’s full name? 2. Who was Elizabeth’s father? 3. What does the word ‘abdicated’ mean? 4. What is Queen Elizabeth the only female member of the Royal Family to have done? 5. Who was Princess Margaret to Queen Elizabeth? 6. Who is Queen Elizabeth’s husband? 7. Who will become King after Queen Elizabeth? 8. Who is the throne expected to go to after Charles?

Maths: In class and during our Area Time, we have used a Venn Diagram to sort out different things, do you remember? A Venn Diagram is where you have two big circles that overlap in the middle. I would like you to have a go at drawing your own Venn Diagram and sorting the members of the Royal Family below based on their age. Don’t forget, any people who do not fit into any of the categories go outside the circles.

Queen Elizabeth (94) Prince Philip (99) Prince Edward (56) Prince Charles (72) Princess Anne (70) Prince Harry (36) Prince William (38) Duchess Catherine (39) Meghan Markle (39) Prince George (7) Princess Charlotte (5) Archie Mountbatten- Windsor (1) Prince Louis (2) Prince Andrew (60)

Tip – any ages between 32 and 42 belong in the middle crossover. You should have 4 people in left circle, 4 people in the middle crossover, 4 people in the right circle and 2 people outside of the circle!

Topic: Have a go at creating a family tree for the Royal Family. I have made a template for you, to help you see how it should be displayed on page 4 – you can either copy this template or print it out and fill it in. I have filled in a few of the people for you on the example below. Don’t forget, when you add in someone’s children, you add them into the tree in age order, so you should start with the eldest and end with the youngest.

If you need some help:

• Queen Elizabeth is married to Prince Philip • They have four children: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. • Prince Charles and Princess had Prince William and Prince Harry. • Prince William is married to Duchess Catherine . • They have three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. • Prince Harry is married to Meghan Markle. • They have one child: Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.

Remember to email me any work you complete, you can take a picture of it or send it me from your Hwb account, my email is [email protected].

I am missing you all so much and absolutely love seeing the work you send me! I hope to see you all very soon.
