Deprivation Source: Indices of Multiple Deprivation 2010, CLG.

The Indices of Multiple Deprivation 2010 (IMD) is a measure of deprivation at the small area level - Lower Super Output Area (LSOA). England is split into 32,482 LSOAs, LSOAs have a minimum population of 1000, and overall average population of 1500, and were ranked to create the IMD. All of the LSOAs in England are ranked. The LSOA ranked one is the most deprived and the LSOA ranked 32,482 is the least deprived. South Bucks contains 40 LSOAs.

The IMD model is based on seven distinct dimensions of deprivation which are then given a weighting to work out an overall ranking for deprivation as shown below:

Domain Weighting

Income Deprivation (eg income related benefits) 22.5% Employment Deprivation (eg job related benefit claimants) 22.5%

Health Deprivation & Disability (eg poor health, disability, mortality rates) 13.5%

Education, Skills & Training Deprivation (eg educational attainment, work skills) 13.5%

Barriers to Housing and Service (eg affordability and distance to services) 9.3%

Crime & Disorder (eg burglary, theft, criminal damage and violence) 9.3% Living Environment Deprivation (eg housing quality, air quality and road traffic 9.3% accidents)

(Please note that IMD 2010 is based on 2008 data.)

6 LSOA IMD Rank (England) Rank in District, 1= most deprived, 1 = most deprived, 32,482 = least deprived 40 = least deprived E01017815 31,568 37 E01017816 29,543 30 E01017817 24,236 19 E01017823 27,010 26

Farnham and Hedgerley is made up of four LSOAs. Two of these fell within the least 10% deprived in all of England the other two fell within the least 11% to 30% deprived areas. The ranking for the overall IMD shows that four LSOAs in South Bucks fell within the most 41% to 50% deprived areas in England, with none falling within the 40% most deprived areas.

The main factors influencing deprivation within South Bucks were Barriers to Housing and Services and Crime. Barriers to Housing and Services reflects the high cost of housing and the rural aspect of the district with 87% of land being Green Belt.
