Metalworking, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Brief Industrial Profile of the West Palatinate Region EN Metalworking, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Brief Industrial Profile of the West Palatinate Region 1 2 Foreword Dear readers, Rhineland-Palatinate is a forward- looking industrial location with a business-friendly climate. We provide the critical hard and soft location fac- tors, which are equally as attractive to companies, as they are to employees and investors. With its position in the middle of Eu- rope, right next to important sales markets, our federal state is attrac- tive for SMEs, as well as for industry. Companies from many sectors col- laborate very closely in many cases with scientific institutions. Nothing is too far away. On top of that, there is the family-friendly and pleasant surrounding area with a high quality of life. The West Palatinate’s position, bordering Germany, France and Benelux, with its international transport connections and a very good supply of skilled work- ers make the region attractive for many companies. With a high density of universities, research institutes and scientific facilities in the relevant topic areas, the West Palatinate is a well-developed techno- logical location . VOGELWELT 125: 21 – 39 (2004) 21 Die Entwicklung einer Wiederansiedlungspopulation des Weißstorchs Ciconia ciconia in Rheinland-Pfalz und im Saarland Michael Stoltz & Hans-Wolfgang Helb Stoltz, M. & H.-W. Helb 2004: The development of a reintroduced population of White Storks Ciconia ciconia in the Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. Vogelwelt 125: 21 – 39. In 1997, a group called “Aktion PfalzStorch e.V. Bornheim” started a reintroduction project to transfer project storks into Rhineland-Palatinate. In 2002, the stork population consisted of 32 breeding pairs there, with an additional breeding pair in the adjacent Saarland (Fig. 1; for the percentages of the various types in each year see Fig. 3). By 2003 the population had increased to a total of 37 breeding pairs. Some critics disapproved of the use of project storks for this purpose, claiming that they have inadequate fi tness and a poor ability to reproduce, as well as lacking a migratory drive and also being dependent on supplementary feeding. Furthermore it is feared that mating of project storks with wild storks could have a negative infl uence on the biorhythmicity and population genetics of wild stork stocks in the long term. On the example of the western Palatinate and the Saarpfalz-Kreis, we studied the migration of White Storks and the attractant effect of them on conspecifi cs (Fig. 4 and 5). It was possible to estimate a distance of c. 7 km over which the project storks had attracted conspecifi cs. Calculations in- dicated that the visual angle at which the migrating storks had detected their conspecifi cs was 30 seconds of arc.
