Harley launched its Sportster 1100, based on the new Evolution design, in 1986 and bumped it to 1203cc in 1988. The basic 1200 with relatively minor changes remains in Harley's 2003 line, which over time has expanded to also include the Sportster 1200 Custom and Sportster 1200 Sport, armed with a hopped-up engine and a slightly tweaked chassis. More recently, Harley Not everyone wants to join the rearranged everyone's thinking with the 1130cc V-Rod, the V-twin parade, and BMW's firmÂ’s first completely new model in over four decades. opposed twin offers some Honda also made a series of revisions and derivative models clear advantages, both inside based on its 1100 V-twin, though for 2003 only two models, and outside of the engine bay. the Spirit and Sabre, are left. The ACE, Aero and Shadow Tourer are not in the '03 line. The popular supposition is that the new VTX 1300 is the first of a Sign up for our series that will shoulder the 1100s aside. Yamaha's Viragos were discarded in favor of the V- Free Newsletter! Star 1100 series, new bikes that use the same basic engine layout in an entirely new chassis with contemporary styling. There are three V-Star 1100 models for 2003, all of which use the same engine and basic chassis. Others also joined this in-between cruiser class. In 1988, Moto Guzzi introduced its first 1100cc California model, which like other Guzzis used an across-the frame V-twin. In 2002, Guzzi offered five variants on a single engine/chassis combination in the California line. Most recently, BMW joined the fray with its 1200 cruiser in 1998. For 2002, the same basic engine and running gear was available in three different trim variations, and has been fitted to a full-dress touring variant for 2003. With 16 different models of these 1000 to 1200cc twins, it obviously wasn't going to be practical to gather them all for a test. Fortunately, we didn't need to. Instead we narrowed it down to just one of each basic engine-chassis combination. That meant that the BMW Phoenix could fill in for all five R1200C variants. Harley's Sportster 1200 Custom and basic Sportster 1200 use the same basic running gear, so we just signed up for a Custom, which was joined by the Sportster Harley offers two different 1200 Sport with its unique engine and sporting-oriented familes. The venerable frame and running gear and, of course, the completely Sportster 1200s, represented different V-Rod. Both the remaining Honda 1100s, which by the Custom (in white) and have different gearing and chassis geometry, joined the the Sport (blue), are joined by herd. Guzzi's California EV was selected to represent its the 1130cc V-Rod. clan, and the Custom rendition of the V-Star 1100 family carried the Yamaha flag. That left us with a more manageable eight bikes. However, as we were preparing to depart on our test ride, we discovered that the Guzzi's fuel cap would not unlock, which meant that it stayed behind and dropped the count to seven times eleven. Cruise Control We spent a leisurely three days cruising the 1100s around some of Southern California's more scenic roads and towns. Our ride spirited us north up Pacific Coast Highway toward Santa Barbara with a side trip through the Santa Monica Mountains, then took us inland to Ojai and Santa Paula to time-travel at the nicely restored train station and the Santa Paula Airport, where we sidled up next to a couple of biplanes for photos and peered into the old hangar where Honda has tried quite a few Steve McQueen used to keep his bike collection, sometimes variants of its V-twin, but the even sleeping with it. We stopped and enjoyed unexpected waterfalls that somehow manage to keep running despite California's prolonged drought, and we sweltered while video crews from the Speed Channel asked us to make "just one more run" past their cameras for a piece on "Motorcyclist TV." Of course, the bikes also saw daily duty, running us to work or out for a relaxing evening or weekend rides. By the time our core testing crew was done, each of us had a pretty solid idea of which bikes were our favorites. A motorcycle introduces itself the first time you walk up to it and fire it up for the first ride. Its willingness to start and respond to throttle gives a sense of the engine's personality, and as you settle into the saddle, you get your first impression of how it will fit you. The Sportsters come to life a bit reluctantly, demanding choke unless warm, then shaking and spitting for a bit until warm. By contrast, the V-Rod lights when the starter is punched and, thanks to fuel injection, http://www.motorcyclecruiser.com/roadtests/1100s/ (2 of 10)7/6/2004 4:45:59 PM Motorcycle Cruiser magazine 1100 and 1200 V-twin cruiser comparison road test idles immediately and smoothly. The BMW is also injected but often requires a bit of cranking before it catches. When it does, the bike wants to lean to the right slightly in response to the engine torque reaction. The Yamaha usually starts without choke unless it is a cold morning and is ready to go immediately. Both Hondas usually want some choke but warm pretty quickly. The V-Rod, resplendent in its anodized alloy bodywork, with its radically foot-forward and slightly leaned- back rider posture represents one extreme The Sportster Sport is the other end of the class, both in terms of style and its slightly sporty statement. The Sport's rough-hewn purebred American style greets the rider with its pegs somewhat rearward, a low and narrow handlebar and a canted-forward riding position over the small fuel tank. The BMW Phoenix catches the eye with its unusual suspension and frame arrangement, the absence of a swingarm on the left and a unique black and yellow paint scheme. It offers its With no left side on its rider a wide, low-rise bar, a broad solo saddle backed up by swingarm, it's unique front an unusual luggage carrier behind it, and footpegs kept suspension, and a luggage somewhat rearward by its projecting cylinders.

Improving SafetyImproving and forScooter Moped Motorcycle, Riders Improving Safety for Motorcycle, Scooter and Moped Riders The global fleet of powered two-wheelers (PTWs) is constantly increasing. In many countries, motorcycles, scooters and mopeds play a significant role in mobility, particularly in many of the world’s large cities. As such, PTWs are becoming an important component of the transport system. However, they represent an important challenge for road safety. PTW riders are at far more risk than car drivers per kilometre ridden in terms of fatalities and severe injuries entailing long-term disability. Moreover, they have not benefited from safety improvements at the same pace as car occupants over recent decades. Addressing the issue of PTW safety is thus an essential contribution to the success of the United Nations’ Decade of Action for Road Safety, which aims at halving the expected number of road deaths worldwide by 2020. This report reviews recent trends in powered two-wheeler crashes, the factors contributing to these crashes and their severity. It describes a set of countermeasures targeting user behaviours, the use of protective equipment, the vehicles and the infrastructure. Finally, it discusses motorcycle safety strategies in the context of a safe system. And there is probably nothing more spiritually tied to that sojourner’s dream than Route 66, the “Main Street of America”. Indeed, the beauty of this country and the fun of its people are both to be found along this fabled ribbon of asphalt in addition to some “crazy by-way kitsch” that is the source of both memories and amusement. Join me as I begin this journey and travel this 2,500 mile thoroughfare from Chicago to Santa Monica stopping at many places along the way. In this first piece I pay tribute to the motorcyclist and their modern day iron horses. Look closely in the painting and you might recognize one of film’s earliest two-wheeled rebels as well as a notorious easy rider. I have also placed references to some of the most noted makes of motorcycle for you to discover as you explore my canvas. My grandfather loved the lure of the open road, a feeling that was translated to my father and uncle and now to me and my own brothers. The joy of the ride is often as satisfying as the destination and so it is in this case. There will be several stops on this trip and further tributes to be paid.

Motorcycles registered in the United States, 2002–18 January 2019 Eric R. Teoh Insurance Institute for Highway Safety The following tables summarize the U.S. motorcycle population between 2002 and 2018, based on Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) analyses of data provided by IHS Markit. Registration counts as of January 1 of each year were provided by year, state, and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) pattern (first 10 digits). The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) decoded VIN patterns to determine make, series, and model year, and information maintained by HLDI on motorcycle type and antilock braking system (ABS) availability were appended to each record by make/series/model year. Only on- road classes of motorcycles were included. Since the VIN information is constantly improving, the counts in this paper may differ slightly from the previous version. Selected observations • The number of on-road motorcycles registered in the U.S. has been generally increasing throughout these years, doubling from 4.2 million in 2002 to 8.3 million in 2018 (Table 1). Registrations declined from 2017 to 2018 to slightly below the 2015 number. • California and Florida have the largest number of registered motorcycles by large margins. • Cruisers and touring bikes are the largest classes of registered motorcycles (Table 2). • Choppers are a relatively new class designation from manufacturers. This class probably is undercounted, as similar motorcycles are custom builds and not identifiable from VIN numbers. • Scooter registrations have been increasing but also may be undercounted, as many have engines smaller than 50 cubic centimeters (cc) and state laws (including registration requirements) vary widely for vehicles with such small engines.

OEM ORIGIN BUILD We have found in previous experience that people can find it a daunting prospect commissioning a custom motorcycle, it really shouldn’t be. When organised and coordinated properly we feel you should enjoy the designing and conceptual stages of the bike being built as much as riding it. It is a very intricate job requiring experience in a broad spectrum of skill set which we have honed at the OEM House Of Assembley. We have put together this Origin build sheet for all those quizzical about a possible one off custom motorcycle build. And remember no money has to be laid down and no dates are set in stone until the design is signed off. Step 1 Send us over as much or as little as you like using the 4 point build idea sheet. Step 2 We will then draw up some simple concepts using the information provided Step 3 If you like what you see we can fully render the drawings and with a small commitment fee you will receive a printed copy of the proposed build and all the artwork with it. Step 4 Once everybody is happy we come up with a suitable payment scheme and once the deposit is laid down the build can begin! THE BUILD IDEA Style Find motorcycle images that the style, lines, riding position etc appeals to you. Gather as many photo/ drawings/images of motorcycles that you like the look of as a complete bike. Include any imagery that you feel you want to include or take inspiration from which we can use to integrate within the design e.g a film watched or picture seen that inspires you.

  • The 2007 Iron Butt Rally Day -2 Saturday, August 18, 2007
The 2007 Iron Butt Rally Day -2 Saturday, August 18, 2007 Today was the primary day for tech inspection and rider check-in for the 13th running of the Iron Butt Rally. The parking lot of the Doubletree Hotel in Chesterfield, Missouri is filled with motorcycles that are anything but a representative cross section of the motorcycles purchased by the general public. Cruisers and sport bikes dominate the U.S. motorcycle market. But cruisers are about style and sport bikes are about speed. The Iron Butt Rally is about efficiently riding long distances. There have been some exceptional long distance rides done on cruisers and sport bikes, but they are just not the optimum type of motorcycle for this event. With the exception of Brett Donahue's extensively modified Harley-Davidson Sportster and Alan Bennett s 250 cc Kawasaki Ninja, everyone is riding a motorcycle in the "touring," "sport-touring," or "dual sport" category. Among the touring bikes, the most popular models are Honda Gold Wings and BMW K1200LTs. In the sport-touring category, the most popular models are the Yamaha FJR1300, the BMW R1200RT and R1150RT, the BMW K1200GT, and the Honda ST1300 and ST1100. The most popular Dual-Sport models are the BMW R1200GS and R1150GS, the Suzuki DL1000 and DL650 (aka the V-Strom and the Wee-Strom). Of the 97 motorcycles entered, there are 42 BMWs, 27 Hondas, 14 Yamahas, 5 Suzukis, 3 Kawasakis, 3 Harley-Davidsons, 1 Buell, 1 Triumph, and 1 Victory. The oldest is the 1972 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide ridden by Mark Collins.
