Read A. D. 1823. THE present memoir may be prefaced by a brief statement of the early annals of the two groupes of islands named Orkney and Shetland. Near the close of the first century, when Agricola sailed round Britain, Orkney was inhabited by a people of whose race, whether Celtic or Gothic, not the least light is to be elicited from the pages of history. In about a century and a half after- wards, this country was described by Solinus as a perfect desert. Orkney and, probably, Shetland were next the lurking places of Saxon rovers, who were routed, A. IX 368, by Theodosius. The Scandinavian Vikingr then gradually succeeded in the posses- sion of these islands. They were the progenitors of the present race of inhabitants in Orkney and Shetland. Three or four cen- turies afterwards, these tribes were subdued by Harold Harfagre, who annexed them, under the form of a colony, to the government of Norway. This is the earliest history of Orkney and Shetland, which it is necessary to keep in view while I explain the origin and practice of the Scandinavian thing, named by us a Ting, or court of justice, as it formerly existed in these Norwegian colonies. It will be shewn, first, that the ting was, by our Gothic an- cestors, either held on the site, or was made an appendage of the hof or temple, which was dedicated to the rites of the Edda. Firstly, it seeks to analyze the sociopolitical functionality of feasting and gift giving as modes of political communication in later twelfth- and thirteenth-century Iceland, primarily but not exclusively through its secular prose narratives. Secondly, it aims to place that functionality within the larger framework of the power and politics that shape its applications and perception. Feasts and gifts established friendships. Unlike modern friendship, its medieval namesake was anything but a free and spontaneous practice, and neither were its primary modes and media of expression. None of these elements were the casual business of just anyone. The argumentative structure of the present study aims roughly to correspond to the preliminary and general historiographical sketch with which it opens: while duly emphasizing the contractual functions of demonstrative action, the backbone of traditional scholarship, it also highlights its framework of power, subjectivity, limitations, and ultimate ambiguity, as more recent studies have justifiably urged.

When the Romans left, the Anglo Saxons settled in Britain and ruled until the Vikings from Scandanavia made their way across the sea to invade and settle in Britain. They were a stronger nation than England were at that time and were able to establish themselves within England and other parts of Britain. The First Britons The Anglo Saxons in Britain From around AD400 onwards, Anglo-Saxons settled in villages next to their farmland. They set up a number of different kingdoms, led by lords and chieftains. The most powerful lords acted like local kings and fought one another to gain more land. The strongest Anglo-Saxon tribal chiefs were known as Bretwalda or ‘Ruler of Britain’. By AD800, most Anglo-Saxons had converted to Christianity, and merchants traded goods all over the country and into Europe, making some Anglo-Saxon kingdoms very wealthy. The Vikings in Britain In the mid-700s, the people of Scandinavia (Norway, Denmark and Sweden) began to explore, raid and eventually invade the countries around them. They sailed to Britain, Ireland, France, Spain and Italy. Others travelled by land, going as far as Israel, Greenland and probably America. They were known as Vikings, or Northmen, and began their raids on Britain around the AD790S. The Vikings attacked Britain because they had traded goods with the Anglo- Saxons for many years, and knew of their wealth.

    LAWS AND FLAWS INTIl THE CONSTITUTION OF THE ICELANDIC FREESTATE This paper deals with a society of the Middle Ages. It is an anthfoPological analysis of the constituent elements that built up this society and defined it as politically autonomous and culturally unique. The paper is also an attempt to explain why this social formation could not persist, by exposing its inherent structural weaknesses. The point is that from the very settlement of Iceland, at least two sets of contradictions were latent in the social system, but it was only as time passed and certain external and internal pressures increased that these contradictions and their mutual interaction became fat~l to the Freestate. One contradiction was primarily related to a pat~ern of action and consisted' in the opposition between self-help and 'law. Another was primarily a matter of thought-systems and related to .he distinction between Christianity and paganism.     Our Beer Genes INTRODUCTION It seems that some of us have inherited some genes which have resulted in an appreciation of beer. I have tried to find out if there is any background to support such a presumption for that consumption. And indeed, is seems that many of our distant ancestors have been involved in this. They span mythical, legendary and historical persons; the reader may decide where fiction becomes reality. Going back to the earliest history is the mythical Valhalla where the mead plays a most important role for the Vikings. Also in the Norse mythology cited here Odin arranges to obtain the mead of poetry. You can read a fictional story about the origin of the beer in Finland in the “The Granholm North Pole Legend”, where it seems that Magog, the grandson of Noah married the maiden Lapin Kulta. The Finnish professor Daniel Juslenius shows the roots of the Finns from the family of Magog in the Bible 88 years after the flood. A Finnish reproduction, called Sahti, of the Viking beer shows the recipe for it based on an early find from a ship excavation. The earliest recorded stories about our ancestors brewing beer or ale is by Ægir, a son of Fornjotr, a King of Finland. Aegir’s grandson, named Fjölnir, was also involved deeply in this story about beer. Here I have showed parts from the book about Norwegian-Finnish Royal Ancestry, Mythical to 872. Thor, in the Norse mythology, was a great beer consumer. I have enclosed a story about him and Aegir’s beer brewing kettle.
