Spring, 2021

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Mothers are the great unsung heroes of the pandemic. And they need our help. The responsibilities and stresses of motherhood have increased tenfold over this past year. Keeping family members healthy, housed, fed, on-task with schoolwork, and supported amidst fear and uncertainty is a staggering undertaking. Add to this the hospitalizations or deaths of loved ones from COVID-19; lost jobs, wages, and child care; and the complete erasure of what little stability many families could count on, and you begin to understand the devastation the pandemic has wrought for so many mothers. The health and economic repercussions of COVID-19 have been disproportionate for people already facing the challenges of poverty, food insecurity, mental health challenges and lack of health care. This is particularly true for women of color, who have experienced higher rates of infection, more loss of life, and greater losses. Your gift to the Catholic Charities Mother Day Collection means those bearing the most direct impact of this crisis don't have to struggle and lose ground they've worked so hard for. Your gift means they can access the resources—food, rental assistance, counseling-and professional help they need to ensure their families don't fall further behind. What better way to honor our own mothers and other women we admire than by helping another mom provide for and strengthen her own family? To be part of their resilience and success? To live out the lessons our mothers—many of whom had their own struggles—worked hard to ingrain in us. You have my sincere gratitude for your past support of the Mother's Day Collection, and my most urgent plea to give again. Contributions can be made at www.catholiccharities.net/donate, or mail your gift to Catholic Charities, 721 N. LaSalle St., Chicago, IL 60654. This Mother's Day, the face of need is mothers and their children; the face of hope is you. Please join Catholic Charities in bringing God's infinite mercy and profound hope to thousands of mothers who are heroically shepherding their families through this unprecedented time.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Archbishop of Chicago

St. Edna Campus Upgrades!

Some exciting news to share: The work has begun on the replacement of the ORIGINAL Doherty Center Roof and the replacement of the Air Conditioning Chiller in the Hurley Center. We’ve been saving for these improvements and the Finance Council has given us permission to proceed. We’ve also signed the contract for the Video Monitors in the Church on each side of the Sanctuary and additional cameras. This technology will allow us to broadcast hymn lyrics and other graphics on the monitors to enhance our Worship experience and also to Livestream. Hopefully, a rebate to us from the Annual Catholic Appeal will help pay for this. A number of parishioners have also made private donations toward this project. If you would like to help, please let me know. Fr. Darrio

In Memory A special thank you to all who contributed to our art and environment by their generous donations in memory of deceased friends and family. Through these donations, we were able to provide beautiful flowers and materials that create a prayerful space in which to celebrate.

www.stedna.org 7 Parish Life Commission www.stedna.org/parishlife Stewardship Bulletin Reflection May 2, 2021 — Fifth Sunday of Easter ACTS 9:26-31; PS 22:26-27, 28, 30, 31-32; 1 JN 3:18-24; JN 15:4A, 5B Our readings today teach us what it means to bear fruit as disciples of Christ. We hear in each of our readings that it is from the Lord that good effects will be produced in our lives. In our first reading, we hear about disciples that were preaching the Good News and defending the faith. The work they were doing was “with the consolation of the Holy Spirit.” It was not their work alone, but the work of God. We must ask ourselves, ‘how is God bearing fruit in my life?’ and ‘have I invited the Holy Spirit to work in me?’ The more we try to produce good effects in our lives, the more we will become disappointed if all we are relying on is our own efforts. It is only by inviting the Holy Spirit into our everyday moments that we will see goodness poured out. Jesus clearly tells us how to do this in our Gospel. He says, “I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit.” We can remain in Christ by staying faithful to His commandments and frequently receiving the sacraments. And our day to day moments should be a reflection of those commitments. That could mean opening our day with a prayer of thanksgiving, smiling at those we see on the street, asking God for help as we begin our workday, praising God in moments of trial, taking time to listen to our spouse after a long day. To remain in Christ means, in all that we do, we do it with the Lord. When we live a life like that — as a branch never separated from its vine — God will produce bountiful fruit in our lives.

The St. Edna Outreach to the Poor Ministry has a formed a subsidiary ministry called St. Edna Community Table to welcome and serve all who seek nourishment and fellowship. “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me” Matthew 25:35

Here we are poised to start our eighth season, but the Covid-19 Pandemic is still in effect. PADS sites have been closed since March 2020. Thanks to many generous donations, Journeys has been housing as many as 120 homeless clients at a time in two local hotels. Most of the PADS site churches and other churches, like ours, have been providing meals for the clients living in the hotels. St Edna Community Table has been handling dinner once a month for these clients even after the usual SECT season ended. A special thanks to the wonderful parishioners who have been helping us by providing hot baked potatoes for our dinners during the ‘off’ season. Beginning in May we will also start up our regular season and will offer ‘ToGo’ dinners to help clients who, for whatever reason, are not staying in the hotels funded by Journeys. We will also continue to provide approximately 80 dinners to the hotel clients. We will be scheduled to serve dinners on the 1st and 3rd Sundays from May-September (excluding May 2nd). That will be a lot of meals, but we feel that St Edna is able to manage this because of the wonderful support from our parishioners. We ask for continued prayers for this ministry in these uncertain times. If you would like to help financially, the alms received on the third Sunday of most months benefit St. Edna Community Table or you can send donations directly to the office and indicate that the donation is for SECT. We have also created a web page to allow interested parishioners to sign up to contribute key items, like baked potatoes, sack lunches, etc. for our dinners. The Women’s Centers Baby Bottle campaign has been a major fundraising effort each year since 2006. Each year St. Edna Respect Life Ministry has fully supported this event. With Mass attendance restricted, the traditional distribution of physical Baby Bottles has been quite limited. Because of these uncertain times, a Virtual Baby Bottle Project is now available. You can make your donation at www.gotwc.org - click on “Virtual Baby Bottles.” Or Call 773-794-1313. If you prefer to mail a check, make it payable to The Women’s Centers and write St. Edna in the memo line. Mail it to the address stated below. Since its founding in 1984, the Women’s Centers of Greater Chicago land has saved over 40,000 babies from abortion. Throughout the current COVID-19 crisis, they have continued to provide counseling and support for women considering abortion. Indicate your parish name so the entire community can be thanked for their generosity. You will find St. Edna in the designation drop down menu on the donation page. Spotlight: Anxiety

All of us deal with anxiety at various times in our lives. However, the pandemic has caused an increase in those experiencing symptoms. Recent data from the Kaiser Family Foundation indicates that in January 2021, 41% of adults were reporting symptoms of anxiety and depression. Some symptoms of anxiety include: irritability, tension, fatigue, chest pain, shortness of breath, stomach aches, and headaches.

You are not alone.

Faith can be a powerful tool to help you cope with anxiety

Treat anxiety symptoms as a signal to PRAY Focus on adding prayer vs trying to remove anxiety.

"Dear Heavenly Father, my anxiety is consuming me. I feel powerless to stop it. The despair makes me feel helpless, trapped, and so alone. I know You are with me, but I can’t feel it over my anxiousness. Please help me know that you are with me. Quiet my anxious heart. Knowing You are near will bring me peace. I pray this in the name of your son, Jesus. Amen"
