Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 22, 2019

Please join me in welcoming Mike Wagner, Darren Gillespie and Roy Pascal here to St. Rose for our mini car show to help celebrate the 61st Anniversary of our car raffle. They will be here this Sunday from 8:00am – 1:30pm with their classic cars. Please stop by and see Mike’s 1958 Chevrolet Impala (the exact type of car that was raffled here in 1958), Darren’s 1965 Chevrolet SS and Roy’s 1956 Ford F100. We welcome you to come to our ticket booth and purchase your chance to win the next St. Rose of Lima car. It was great to welcome back our Religious Ed Cycle 1 last weekend. Everything went very smoothly. A big thank you to Bernadette, Gina, our catechists and assistants for all the hard work you do. Our Cycle 2 Religious Ed begins this weekend. I was happy to welcome our 9th grade Confirmation students who began the program last Sunday. Our 10th grade Confirmation students return this Sunday at 5:30pm and at the 7:00pm Mass we will have our Baptismal Renewal. Thank you to Lisa, Tanya and our catechists for all the hard work you do. This Sunday our diocese is hosting a youth pilgrimage to the Tomb of Blessed Miriam Teresa Demjanovich. Hundreds of young people will journey from St. Paul Inside the Walls to Holy Family Chapel in Convent Station. One of our Confirmation catechists, Bobbi Michaels, and four of her students will be joining this pilgrimage. Blessed Miriam Teresa was born Teresa Demjanovich in Bayonne, New Jersey, on March 26, 1901, the youngest of seven children. As a young girl, Teresa wished to become a Carmelite but stayed home to care for her sick mother. After her mother’s death in 1918, she attended the College of St. Elizabeth at Convent Station and graduated in 1923. The following year she entered the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth. As a postulant and novice, Teresa taught at the Academy of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station from 1925-1926. In the spring of 1927 she became very ill and was operated on for appendicitis on May 6th and died two days later. Her funeral was held at Holy Family Chapel in Convent Station and she was buried at Holy Family Cemetery. In 2013, Francis approved the attribution of a miraculous healing to the intercession of Teresa, opening the way to her . The miracle involved the restoration of perfect vision to Mencer, the “Miracle Boy.” The miracle took place when he was 8 years old and his family was living in Teaneck, New Jersey. Young Michael had been diagnosed with juvenile macular degeneration, an incurable and irreversible condition. His vision was so poor he was legally blind. Michael’s third grade teacher in St. Anastasia School, Sr. Marie Augustine, sent him home with a prayer card and relic of Sr. Miriam Teresa. Michael’s mother and family joined along with the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station, praying for a cure for Michael. On September 25th in the early 1960’s, his eye doctor told Michael in six months he would be totally blind. He was already learning Braille. The next day, as Michael walked home from school, his eyesight was instantly restored to normal. Doctors found his vision was perfect 20/20 and had no medical explanation why. Miriam Teresa Demjanovich was beatified by Cardinal at a ceremony on October 4, 2014, held at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark. This was the first time a beatification had ever been held in the and I was honored to be one of two deacons to serve Cardinal Amato on this day.

Yours in Christ, Father Matthew
