John Cale Announces M:FANS / Music for a New Society November 17, 2015 For Immediate Release John Cale Announces M:FANS / Music For A New Society Newly Reworked And Re-mastered Original Albums Out January 22, 2016 On Double Six / Domino Watch Video for “Close Watch” http://smarturl.it/ClosewatchVideo (Above image by David Reich) M:FANS, a radical new reworking of one of John Cale’s most unique and lauded solo records, the 1982 masterpiece Music For A New Society, will be released on January 22, 2016 on Double Six / Domino. View the video for album track “Close Watch,” featuring Dirty Projectors’ Amber Coffman and directed by Abby Portner. Additionally, a fully re-mastered Music For A New Society will be available with three previously unreleased bonus tracks from the original multi-track recordings. Watch John Cale’s “Close Watch” - http://smarturl.it/ClosewatchVideo M:FANS explores the relationship between old and new, in terms of the sound and vision, and Cale’s memories of the experience, in terms of his life and the recording. Back and forth M:FANS goes, sampling the original, while creating brand new soundscapes, giving Cale the opportunity for closure on one of the most testing eras of his life, and a way to keep moving forward. Cale shares his thoughts on the reworking: “Making any form of art is always personal to my mind. During the making of M:FANS, I found myself loathing each and every character written aBout in those original recording sessions of Music For... Unearthing those tapes reopened those wounds. It was time to decimate the despair from 1981 and Breathe new energy, re-write the story. Then, the unthinkaBle happened. What had informed so much over lost and twisted relationships in 1981 had now come full circle. Losing Lou [too painful to understand] forced me to upend the entire recording process and Begin again...a different perspective - a new sense of urgency to tell a story from a completely opposite point of view - what was once sorrow, was now a form of rage. A fertile ground for exorcism of things gone wrong and the realization they are unchangeaBle. From sadness came the strength of fire!!!” With Cale’s current band (featured on his last studio album Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood) involved again, the new versions that constitute M:FANS are more fleshed-out, heavier concoctions, in line with his current electronic/chopped-up configurations. In 1982, Music For A New Society sounded exactly like its title: something futuristic, a new kind of songwriting exercise. In 2015, M:FANS is exactly that too, full of electrical crackle and disturbed frequencies, a different kind of dystopian future awaits. John Cale forages on; it’s the only way he knows how. M:FANS and Music For A New Society will be released as a 2xCD package with both albums also packaged together on digital stores. Both albums will also be available on 12” vinyl, with M:FANS arriving on 2xLP. Music For A New Society comes with a download card of the three unreleased bonus tracks as listed below. • The Debussy Effect
THE DEBUSSY EFFECT KATHLEEN SUPOVÉ, PIANIST What is it about Debussy that evokes such a reaction in audiences and musicians alike? Maybe it’s their childhood memories of playing something from “Children’s Corner”; maybe it’s hearing “Claire de Lune” in a movie soundtrack; or maybe it’s something deeper. There is a primal connection with those harmonies, one shared by people all over––when we hear his music in the concert hall, when we hear its traces in a Balinese gamelan, in baby boomer American rock music, in jazz harmonies, and elsewhere. His music seems to suggest a state of mind, too, envisioned in a very crystalline and per- sonal way. We’re each sure we’ve got the scoop on it, but each of us sees it differently! Two things conspired to give me the idea for this project: the first was curating the “Mu- sic With A View” series at The Flea Theater in NYC. After each event, composers were interviewed and asked who their influences were. Of course, they ranged far and wide, across genres and cultures, but almost everyone mentioned Claude Debussy! The sec- ond was hearing and performing “The Other Piano”, a work for solo piano and sound processing by Morton Subotnick. I often found myself thinking it sounded like some- thing Debussy would have written had he been around in the 21st Century. I asked a select group of composers to write something for solo piano (with or without electron- ics) based, in some way, on Debussy, and to make a piece that would bring him into our century.

  • John Cale Is Coming to Basel: Vis-À-Vis with Rock Music Legends Thanks to the Partnership Between the Fondation Beyeler and Bayer
Media release, 31st August 2016 John Cale is coming to Basel: Vis-à-vis with rock music legends thanks to the partnership between the Fondation Beyeler and Bayer John Cale, charismatic founding member of the unforgettable avant-garde band The Velvet Underground that was associated with Andy Warhol, extraordinary solo musician and music producer, is performing an exclusive concert with his trio at the Fondation Beyeler on October 22 at 6pm. Exceptional art experiences are a tradition at the Fondation Beyeler. Why does fine art exert such a powerful fascination? Why are museums so popular? Doubtless because they permit a direct personal relationship to art, face to face and with no filter. When we visit a museum, we totally possess the artworks we see for a few moments in time; we immerse ourselves in them and they arouse emotions and questions in us, generating lively dialogs spanning different centuries and cultures. The close, intimate, sometimes demanding and always exciting experiencing of art in a museum has inspired the Fondation Beyeler and Bayer to hold a lose series of concerts in which a legendary musician can be experienced close up, just as artworks are. Last year Patti Smith and her band performed an acoustic set at the Fondation Beyeler and this year it is the turn of the rock legend John Cale. After studying at Goldsmiths College in London, the unconventional, headstrong Welshman was awarded a Leonard Bernstein scholarship thanks to the intervention of Aaron Copland, the contemporary US composer, and worked with major figures on the American avant-garde scene such as La Monte Young and John Cage.
