AFFECTED VEHICLES

Certain 1999 3.0L Ranger Trucks built at the Twin Cities Assembly Plant, Louisville Assembly Plant and the Edison Assembly Plant from March 8, 1999 through April 12, 1999.

REASON FOR RECALL

The affected trucks were built with water pumps that may have excessive axial runout of the water pump hub threads. This could result in water pump failure and possible engine overheating.

SERVICE ACTION

To correct this condition owners of the affected vehicles will be advised to return their Ranger to the dealer to have a new water pump and gasket installed at no cost to the owner. QUESTIONS?

WATER PUMP REPLACE

AFFECTED VEHICLES:

CERTAIN 1999 RANGERS EQUIPPED WITH 3.0L ENGINES

REMOVEL

1. Drain the cooling system. 2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube as follows: { Disconnect the intake air temperature sensor. { Disconnect the crankcase fresh air tube. { Loosen the air cleaner outlet tube clamps at the mass airflow sensor and the throttle body. { Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. 3. Remove the accessory drive belt. { NOTE: Fan assembly has left hand threads.

4. Remove the fan shroud and fan assembly as follows: { Remove the fan shroud retaining bolts. { Loosen and remove the fan assembly from the water pump hub while holding the water pump pulley with a strap wrench. { Remove the shroud and fan assembly from the vehicle together. 5. Disconnect the lower radiator hose at the lower intake manifold fitting. See Figure 1. 6. Disconnect the water bypass hose at the water pump. See Figure 1.

7. Remove the water pump pulley. 8. Remove the A/C line routing bracket from the water pump stud. See Figure 2.

9. Remove the fuel line routing bracket from the A/C compressor mounting bracket stud. See Figure 3. 10. Remove the power distribution harness routing bracket from the A/C compressor mounting bracket stud. See Figure 3.

11. Remove the retaining bolts from the A/C compressor mounting bracket, then position the bracket away from the engine. See Figure 4.

12. Disconnect the crankshaft sensor and position the connector and harness out of the way. 13. Remove the water pump. See Figure 5.

14. Remove the water pump gasket and clean the sealing surfaces of the engine.

INSTALLATION

1. Position the water pump gasket onto the water pump and hold it in place with two (2) retaining bolts. 2. Install the water pump and gasket assembly. Tighten the retaining bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). 3. Connect the crankshaft sensor. 4. Install the A/C compressor mounting bracket. Tighten the retaining bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb-ft). 5. Install the power distribution harness routing bracket to the A/C compressor mounting bracket stud. Tighten the retaining nut securely. 6. Install the fuel line routing bracket to the A/C compressor mounting bracket stud. Tighten the retaining nut securely. 7. Install the A/C line routing bracket to the water pump stud. Tighten the retaining nut securely. 8. Install the water pump pulley. Tighten the retaining bolt to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). 9. Connect the water bypass hose at the water pump. 10. Connect the lower radiator hose at the lower intake manifold fitting. 11. Install the fan shroud and fan assembly as follows: { Position the fan shroud and fan assembly into the vehicle together. { Install the fan assembly while holding the water pump pulley with a strap wrench. Tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft). { Install the fan shroud retaining bolts. Tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in). 12. Install the accessory drive belt. 13. Install the air cleaner outlet tube as follows: { Connect the air cleaner outlet tube to the throttle body and mass airflow sensor. { Tighten the clamps to 4 Nm (35 lb-in). { Connect the crankcase fresh air tube. { Connect the intake air temperature sensor. 14. Fill the cooling system. 15. Start the engine. Check the engine for leaks.

Ford Motor Company is providing a no-charge Service Program, Number 99B15, to owners of certain 1999 Ranger Trucks with 3.0L engines.

REASON FOR THIS PROGRAM

The affected trucks were built with water pumps that may have excessive axial runout of the water pump hub threads. This could result in water pump failure and possible engine overheating.

NO CHARGE SERVICE

To correct this condition your dealer will install a new water pump on your Ranger at no charge to you. Your vehicle is eligible for this program until April 30, 2000, regardless of mileage. (After this program expires, the vehicle may still be eligible for this service under any remaining vehicle warranty coverage).

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

The time needed for this repair is less than one-half day. However, due to service scheduling issues, your dealer may need your vehicle for a longer period of time. Please call your dealer for a service date.

CALL YOUR DEALER

Call your dealer without delay. Ask for a service date and whether parts are in stock for Owner Notification Program 99B15.

If your dealer does not have the parts in stock, they can be ordered before scheduling your service date. Parts would be expected to arrive within a week after ordering.

When you bring your vehicle in, show the dealer this letter. If you misplace this letter, your dealer will still do the work, free of charge.

If you paid to have this service done before the date of this letter, Ford is offering a full refund. For the refund, please give your paid original receipt to your Ford or Lincoln Mercury dealer. To avoid delays, do not send receipts to .
