George Gershwin Samstag, 12 Late Night Jazz: George Gershwin Samstag, 12. • Charles Mingus, Jazz and Modernism
Charles Mingus, Jazz and Modernism by: Philippe Latour Schulich School of Music McGill University, Montreal December 2012 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts in Musicology. © Philippe Latour 2012 Table of Content Abstracts ----------------------------------------------------------- ii Acknowledgements ----------------------------------------------------------- iv Chapter 1 ----------------------------------------------------------- 1 Introduction Chapter 2 ----------------------------------------------------------- 15 Jazz Modernism Chapter 3 ----------------------------------------------------------- 45 Mingus‟ Conception of Jazz Conclusion ----------------------------------------------------------- 63 Bibliography ----------------------------------------------------------- 66 Appendices ----------------------------------------------------------- 71 i Abstracts The purpose of this thesis is to explore the diverse discourses of modernism in jazz at mid-century in relation to the work of Charles Mingus. What was meant by modern jazz in Mingus‟ time? How was his music, as well as his life as a jazz musician and composer, affected by discourses of modernism? Modernism was used in the jazz field as a discourse to elevate jazz from its role as entertainment music into a legitimate art form. In its transfer from European art music to African-American jazz, the concept of aesthetic modernism retained most of its signification: it was associated with the notions of progress, of avant-gardism, and, eventually, of political militancy; and all these notions can be found in multiple forms in Mingus‟ work. This thesis defines the concept of modern jazz as it was used in the jazz press in the 1950s and 1960s in relation to the critical discourse around Afro-modernism as well as in relation with Mingus‟ conception of himself as a composer. L’objectif de ce mémoire est d’explorer les différents discours sur le modernisme et le jazz des années 1950 et 1960 en relation avec l’œuvre de Charles Mingus.

Following the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, blues songs started to emerge from the Deep South. Blues was a cultural response to the newly-acquired freedom of African Americans. This music echoed the centuries of African American slavery and discrimination. Blues commonly referred to the topical events of the post-Reconstruction

ONE WORLD. ONE LOVE. ONE PEACE. www.onepeacebooks.com FALL 2019 WHO IS ONE PEACE BOOKS? One Peace Books was founded in 2006 to translate and publish Japanese entertainment and literature for a North American audience. As the brainchild of successful Japanese publisher Sanctuary Books, One Peace Books occupies a unique place in the publishing industry—able to fully leverage the connections and industry knowledge to publish Japanese literature in translation. As One Peace Books has grown, we’ve utilized those connections and passions to expand our publishing model to include original publications by other artists and writers as well. It is our hope in this way to act as a bridge between cultures. Publishing both Japanese translations and original publications is, in our own small way, an attempt to show that it truly is not language or borders that divide us. As our catalog of North American titles expands, our relationship with our Japanese founders will allow the door to swing both ways by introducing our original North American publications back into Asia—our own small contribution to a more interconnected world built on mutual respect. We believe that art and entertainment is an infectious, necessary, endlessly enjoyable way to bring diverse sets of people together to share in a singular cause or emotion. One World. One Love. • JUDI SILVANO Vocalist, Composer, Lyricist
Website: judisilvano.com Booking: [email protected] Email: [email protected] Tel: 914 213-2992 JUDI SILVANO Vocalist, Composer, Lyricist Riding a Zephyr One of the last recordings of pianist Mal Waldron, who died early in December at 77, is an unusual duo collaboration with vocalist Judi Silvano, Riding a Zephyr. This Soul Note/Black Saint CD features 8 wonderful Waldron compositions, some with adroit lyrics by Silvano and 2 of her compositions. Together the two find some beautiful places on the scale of melody and invention.” Keith Spore, Milwaukee Journal “Pianist Mal Waldron features as the sole musical accompaniment to jazz vocalist Judi Silvano on the recent Soul Note album Riding a Zephyr. Waldron was in Billie Holiday's band for her final two years. Waldron wrote or co-wrote most of the music on this album which features beautifully simple, understated piano giving room to Silvano's delightful phrasing and playful scatting.” OutSight Home Page, new-sounds.net “Judi Silvano and Mal Waldron's Riding a Zephyr was recorded in Brussels during Judi's European tour in the year 2000. Mal's piano warmly embraces Silvano's vocals which thoughtfully interpret his original compositions along with some of her own. It is a hearwarming duo.” Swing Journal, JAPAN “Waldron, the pianist on this duo outing recorded in his adopted home of Brussels on Nov. 8, 2000, died on Dec. 2 of cancer. He was either 76 or 77 depending on which source you believe. He recorded prolifically but not often with singers - that said, one of his most visible gigs was as Billie Holiday’s last accompanist (he was with Lady Day from 1957 up to the time of her death in ’59).

Nicknamed "Lady Day" by her friend and musical partner Lester Young, Holiday had a seminal influence on jazz and pop singing. Her vocal style, strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists, pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo. Biography Early life Holiday was born in Philadelphia, the daughter of Sarah Julia "Sadie" Fagan and Clarence Holiday. Her father, a musician, did not marry or live with her mother. Not long after Holiday's birth, Clarence left her and her mother to pursue a career as a jazz guitarist. Sarah had moved to Philadelphia aged 19, after being ejected from her parents' home in the Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland for becoming pregnant. With no support from her parents, Holiday's mother arranged for the young Holiday to stay with her older married half-sister, Eva Miller, who lived in Baltimore. Holiday, who was of African American ancestry, was also said to have had Irish ancestors through her mother's mixed heritage.
