On the Edge. The Concept of Progress in Bukhara during the Rule of the Later Manghits. Studia Iranica Upsaliensia 22. 215 pp. Uppsala: Acta Universitatis Upsalien- sis. ISBN 978-91-554-8805-5. This work is a study of the concept of progress in Bukhara between approximately 1860 and 1920. It is based on unpublished and published sources from this period. The study suggests that not only the technological and social developments that took place on a global scale between 1860 and 1920 affected the conceptualization of progress in Bukhara, but that globa- lized narratives on progress did so as well. Cosmographical concepts and explanations that previously were more common were notably absent in what during the 1910s became a disco- urse on progress, but the concept of progress still had an important eschatological dimension and was closely related to apocalypticism. Chapter One presents the context of the study. The second chapter discusses the theoreti- cal framework and the analytical concepts. The next chapter continues by outlining the politi- cal, economic and cultural conditions in Bukhara during this period as well as providing a short historiographical discussion. The fourth chapter discusses the concept of geography and how it affected metaphorical constructions of time. Chapter Five is a study of how Bukharan travellers conceived of novelties. The following chapter discusses the direction of discontinui- ty and its eschatological implications. Chapter Seven studies how knowledge was temporali- zed and affected by a shift in the direction of discontinuity. Chapter Eight discusses the lexe- me taraqqī, in which the concept of progress later was embedded, as well as various synchro- nic and diachronic orders. Chapter Nine discusses the eschatological and apocalyptic discour- se in Bukhara during the 1910s. The last chapter contains general conclusions in the form of a discussion of the operational environment of progress in Bukhara between approximately 1860 and 1920.     Volume: 8 Issue: 2 Year: 2011 A Brief Overview on Karabakh History from Past to Today Ercan Karakoç Abstract After initiation of the glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring) policies in the USSR by Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet Union started to crumble, and old, forgotten, suppressed problems especially regarding territorial claims between Azerbaijanis and Armenians reemerged. Although Mountainous (Nagorno) Karabakh is officially part of Azerbaijan Republic, after fierce and bloody clashes between Armenians and Azerbaijanis, the entire Nagorno Karabakh region and seven additional surrounding districts of Lachin, Kelbajar, Agdam, Jabrail, Fizuli, Khubadly and Zengilan, it means over 20 per cent of Azerbaijan, were occupied by Armenians, and because of serious war situations, many Azerbaijanis living in these areas had to migrate from their homeland to Azerbaijan and they have been living under miserable conditions since the early 1990s. Printed in the United States of America Marianne Kamp PILGRIMAGE AND PERFORMANCE: UZBEK WOMEN AND THE IMAGINING OF UZBEKISTAN IN THE 1920s In August 1924, Anabibi Safaeva set off from her home city of Khiva, which was then the capital of the Xorezm People’s Republic, to study in Tashkent, which was the administrative center of the Turkistan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Safaeva traveled with some 160 students in a convoy of three boats down the Amu River toward the Aral Sea. However, misfortune befell Safaeva: her boat was attacked by basmachis, a bandit or rebel gang.1 The basmachis killed all twenty-two of the men in Safaeva’s group and carried off the women as captives. By the time that Safaeva was rescued, more than two months later, there was no longer a Xorezm People’s Republic or a Turkistan Republic; instead, Safaeva’s Khivan home was now in Uzbek- istan, and Tashkent, the goal of her academic pilgrimage, had become the capital of Uzbekistan. Safaeva waited for several years after her abduction before attempting to travel to Tashkent again, finally going there in 1927 to study at the Central Asian Communist University.2 She worked for the Communist Party of Uzbekistan as an activist in the Tashkent regional Women’s Division while she was studying, and in 1931 she was sent by the party to Uzbekistan’s Bukhara province to participate in the collectivization of agriculture. There she was poisoned, presumably by someone who opposed the state’s appropriation of land.3 Anabibi Safaeva was one of thousands of young women who joined in what Bene- dict Anderson refers to as the pilgrimage of modern education.

Academic year: 2016 – 2017 August, 2017 2 Abstract The title of this work is a reference to Marx’ famous quote, ‘The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains.’ When the proletariat eventually took over control of the former Russian Empire after the October Revolution and the subsequent Russian civil war (1917 – 1923), they had to spread the revolution to the periphery; Central Asia. To gain support in Uzbekistan from the local (female) population the Communist Party commenced the Hujum campaign on the 8th of March 1927. This campaign targeted traditions that they considered derogatory to women, in particular the wearing of the local veil, or ‘paranja’. The campaign was a complete failure due to vehement Uzbek resistance. Yet, nowadays the paranja is little more than a museum piece. The veil disappeared from the street view from the 1950’s onwards. In my research I want to give an explanation for this delayed success. Yet, in a way the Hujum still carries on: both Central Asian and Western countries have a mixed stance on the modern variants of the paranja, as shown in the existence of burqa bans. I have analysed relevant events (such as Stalin’s purges, deportations, the battle against the Basmachi) from before, during, and after the initial Hujum and placed them inside a Gramscian framework to explain their effects on the civil and political society in Uzbekistan.

    Iran and the Caucasus 20 (2016) 253-258 Book Reviews Arthur Tsutsiev: Atlas of the Ethno-Political History of the Caucasus, Translated from Russian by Nora Seligman Favorov, New Haven: “Yale University Press”, 2014, xv+221 pp. Scholars interested in the history of the North and South Caucasus can fi- nally utilize an accurate, complete and objective reference guide in the form of a historical atlas, which depicts the political history and the eth- nic diversity of the region from 1722, that is from the fall of the Safavid Dynasty in Iran and Peter the Great’s invasion of the Caspian littoral, to the present. The 57 superb color maps not only indicate political changes, but also demonstrate the notorious ethnic complexity of this mountainous region, which has perhaps more languages, races and cultures than any other re- gion in the world. Realizing the post-Soviet extreme regional nationalism and the “im- agined states and communities”, which now claim that “our group is an- cient, we were always there, our culture is unique and great, therefore we must do whatever it takes to assert ourselves as a sovereign state”, the au- thor has chosen the historic maps of the Ottoman and Iranian empires (1722-1829)[maps 1-6], as well as the official administrative divisions of the region during the Russian Empire [maps 7-21]. Maps 2-3 clearly demonstrate the fact that the South Caucasus from 1722 to 1736 was the battleground between the Ottomans and Iranians. Map 6 depicts the wars between the Ottoman and Russian, and the Ira- nian and Russian armies.

I argue that the philological approach to the literary cultures of the Caucasus has been a casualty of the rise of areas studies in the North American academy during the Cold War, and that Cold War legacies continue to shape Caucasus Studies to this day. I conclude by offering three proposals for opening ex- changes between the humanities and the social sciences within Caucasus Studies. More broadly, this essay argues for a rapprochement between the social sciences and philologi- cal inquiry vis-à-vis the Caucasus. Keywords Caucasus, Post-Soviet, Area Studies, Disciplinarity, Literature Among the many world areas that arose in the context of the Cold War, the post-Soviet sphere traverses the greatest geography.   • THE KHANATE of Khoqand Was an Exceptionally Dynamic Central Asian
    INTRODUCTION HE KHANATE OF Khoqand was an exceptionally dynamic Central Asian T state that gradually emerged over the course of the eighteenth century in east- ern Uzbekistan’s Ferghana (Farghāna) Valley. The Shahrukhid dynastic family that ruled Khoqand belonged to the Ming, an Uzbek political group, or for want of a better word, tribe.1 Although the term Uzbek is used more inclusively today, in Cen- tral Asian historical literature it refers to the descendants of the several hundred thousand Turkic people who migrated into the region from the Qipchaq Steppe under the leadership of Muhammad Shibani Khan (d. 1510) at the turn of the six- teenth century.2 It therefore distinguishes the Uzbek tribes that were part of that migration from the many other Turkic peoples that had entered the region previously and others who would arrive later. The Uzbeks were the dominant political force in eighteenth- and nineteenth- century Central Asia, and perhaps for that reason the Khanate of Khoqand is some- times identified as an “Uzbek state.” That designation falls short, however, as Kho- qand’s population was much more diverse than it suggests.
