It looks like we escaped the 2011 hurricane season without a hit. Now if we can make it through the winter without a killing frost that does in our trees and shrubbery. We are within a week of our Annual meeting and the election of two new Directors to the Board. I encourage everyone to vote in this election. It is important as these two individuals will be the keeper of the keys to our community for three years. The other hot button issue is the By-law changes concerning the 80/20 rule. The Board of Directors has been studying this issue for months. We have looked at several options and finally selected two. We polled the community and the option on the ballot, count the enlisted members in with the officers was selected by a two to one ratio. Some in the community oppose this and say that it with destroy our community. They seem to think that we will have a major influx of former enlisted personnel. It has taken us ELEVEN (11) years to have just 42 former enlisted members join our ranks. Under the By-Law change we will still be capped at 20% civilians, 80% military which will include all those that have honorable severed their country. We will still be a community composed predominantly of former officers. PLEASE VOTE “YES” ON THE CHANGES TO THE BY-LAW CHANGES. This will be my final article for the Colony Voice. I want to thank all of you for the support given to me and the Board of Directors during my nine years as a member of these Boards. I know that each Board have worked hard to improve IRCC and it has not always been easy or without controversy. I still believe that IRCC is the best place to live and play in all of the country. I hope I can still call each of you “ my friend”. Gloria and I call IRCC our home. Thank you.

TEA Gene Anderson Chairman

From the General Manager

I want to thank the Board of Directors for their guidance, leadership, and selflessness they have shown over the last year in the governance of this wonderful community. They openly discuss the issues that face this community with forethought and fairness. It has been a pleasure serving under them, and though I will miss the often spirited conversations of Mr. Anderson and Mr. Abramowitz, I am sure the incoming board members will carry on this “community comes first attitude” that both of these departing board members have always demonstrated. I urge everyone to get out and vote for whomever you want to see discussing these issues and making decisions on the board over the next three years. Also there is the very important vote on the five changes to the Bylaws that are on the ballot this year. See you at the Annual Meeting!

Indian River Colony Club 1 IRCC Staff Secretary Report Please be reminded that our 25th Annual Meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. in Colony Hall (registration begins at 9:00 a.m.). Please come out and vote for the two new members of the Board of Directors and the five Bylaw Amendments. A special “Thank You” to Gene Anderson and Ben Abramowitz for serving their time on the Board of Directors. Each made significant contributions to the board as well as the community. Thank You. The entire staff would like to extend their sincerest thanks to the residents for their generous donations and to wish everyone a joyous and safe Holiday Season! Just a friendly reminder, the department hours for the holiday season are posted in the Holidays Hours information box on page 1 of the Colony Voice.

Julie Roberts At Ease Club Hi everybody! The Marine Corps Ball and Thanksgiving were a huge success. The Birthday Brunch was also very well attended. The Birthday Brunch for the next 2 months will be December 18th and January 15th. We will not have the 19th Hole menu available on December 3rd, 6th, 9th, 10th,17th , 30th or 31st. This is due to New Years Eve, Christmas Eve, employee Christmas party, buffets and other special event nights. We will be closed on Monday December 26th. When you drink alcohol on the rocks or up with no ice it shows on your bill as extra for rocks or up. The reason for this is you get an extra shot of liquor to fill up the space of no ice. That is the .85 charge that is on Mike Hensley the bill. We are now offering our 19th hole dinner menu Tuesday through Saturday from 5:00-7:00. The special menuis not available in the regular dining room and the Dining Room Menu is not available in the 19th hole. We can’t offer this on Seafood Buffet Nights or other specials buffet nights. You do not need reservations to eat in the 19th Hole. Stop by and see our scrumptious light menu. We have the best valued Champagne Sunday Brunch in Brevard County complete with a few breakfast items, delightfully tasty entrees and a carving station along with scrumptious desserts. Make reservations and experience a delightful club offering. Please call for reservations as soon as possible to get your desired times for a la Carte, Wednesday night specials and special functions. The 6:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. times fill up quickly. The reason we can only take a limited amount of reservation per ½ hour is that we are limited in the kitchen to how many dinners we can produce in ½ hour with the equipment and space that we have available to us. Remember that to go orders have to be in before 4:30 p.m. and picked up no later than 6:00 p.m. Dining Room and Special Function Reservations are available 30 days in advance. Piano Bar and Bingo will be on the 13th and 20th of December. These are also our Early Bird Dinner Nights. Should anyone have any kind of problem at the club, with quality of food or service, we ask that you please let us know at the time of the occurrence so that we can correct the problem. There is a manager on duty at all times. Bon Appetit!!

Residential Information

1. SUBMITTING MAINTENANCE WORK ORDERS BY EMAIL—ITS EASY: Go to the IRCC website www.indianrivercolonyclub.com. From the site’s initial home page, Click on “Member Log-in” at the bottom right hand corner. (If you haven’t already registered on the member website, please call Maureen in Admin to get you registered at 255-6026.) Then, at the Log-in page, Click “Maintenance” from the top-of-the-page banner or Click the “Maintenance On-line Work Orders” box at the bottom right corner of the Log-in page. At the Work Order page, simply answer the work order related questions and Click “Submit.” Your work order request goes directly to the work order desk at the Maint. Bldg. and a personal confirmation message will be emailed back to you by Lynda or Georgy the same or next duty day when your request is retrieved. That’s it—like taking candy from a baby. To check status of a previously submitted work order, you can computer “reply” to the confirmation notice you received or call the services desk Richard Agnew directly at 255-6049. 2. “WORST STATE FOR BUGS”—GUESS WHO?: According to an independent survey conducted among 675 homeowners nation-wide, Florida is the worst state for bugs (what else is new!). Louisiana—2nd and Texas 3rd are close behind followed by California, Georgia, NY, Mississippi, Alabama, Missouri and South Carolina filling in the top 10. States with the least bug problems were topped by Washington DC (probably worst in communication bugs), South Dakota, Connecticut, Idaho and New Hampshire—(How can any bugs exist in those cold places?). NY was worst for bed bugs with California and Florida being close runners-up (Tourists and Hotels promote the problem). Ant infestations were rated as the most common insect problem with 60% of those polled having had ant concerns while only 27% saying they felt they would “likely” encounter a termites infestation. Here at IRCC, since our 2004 house slab re-treat with Termidor, the latest and greatest termite and ant colony elimination product, (to include twice a year Termidor refreshment treats) we have not seen a live termite (knock on solid wood)

If you are interested in hosting a Getaway, there is a form to fill out on the site that could be kept on file. 4. FPL’s “ON CALL” PROGRAM--ARE YOU A SUBSCRIBER? If not, you should be! This long standing,“voluntary participation” program allows FPL to cut power to certain “non-critical” home power consumers (A/C units, pool pump equip and hot water heaters) for no more than 10 minutes in any one hour during period of high energy usage. They do this by having an electrical contractor hook up a radio controlled system to the resident selected appliances. The benefit to you--depending on how many of the power consumers you allow them to include, FPL takes $4 to $10 per month off you electric bill--every month. IRCC residents have been subscribing to this program for years and we have never had a concern expressed--you’ll never realize if or when they may cut power to your A/C or pool heater, etc., because it’s for such short periods. To subscribe, call 1-(800)- 232-2050 and ask for ON-CALL--FPL takes care of everything at no expense to you. Make the call—it can save you up to $120 a year—with no side effects. 5. MEDICAL EQUIPMENT LOAN CLOSET: Need short-term use of a walker, electric scooter, crutches, shower or potty chair, a wheel chair or other “medical stuff?” Please contact Linda Raycroft in the Maintenance Bldg. Housekeeping Dept. (255-6057) for information and equipment availability--no cost or questions asked and “we deliver” if need be. Have something to donate?-- we’ll come get it and make it available to our residents and staff. 6. PEST CONTROL--WINTER PRECAUTIONS: Lots of our neighborhood critters (particularly, rodents, squirrels and raccoons) want to get in where it’s warm during Florida’s winter--and we need your help to deter them. Check around the house for “openings” at stucco edges, roof edge soffit and top-of-roof ridge vents. As you do not want to provide “room and board” for our outdoor friends, keep your garage door “closed” when not in use and secure garage-stored pet food and bird seed in closed metal container--as these guys, in this economy, will chew through paper/plastic/cardboard containers and will make extra efforts to get in if they know there is free food included in the seasonal stay. If you find an entry problem, see droppings or hear unusual, recurring noise in the attic, give the Services Desk a call (255-6049) and our crack pest control staff will do their best to put unwanted visitors back in their habitat.

Golf Course/Pro Shop The Pro Shop would like to thank those who donated their carts, volunteered or played in the 16th Annual Alzheimer’s Golf Classic. Without our member’s generosity and support, we could not host this worthwhile event. We had a great turnout for the Veterans’ Day Tournament. Tied for first place with a score of 65 were the teams of Lyn Just, Bill Poindexter, Sonny Simerly, Bill Dudley and Tick Jamison, Barbie Zorn, Bob Parker and Bob Lucas. Closest to the Pin winners were Jo Britton and Sam Fulton. Please note that during the months of December and January, the regular 8:30 am Wally Bandura shotgun will be backed up to 9:00 am per the decision of the Golf Advisory Committee. The Pro Shop will be closed Monday, December 26 and January 2. Gene Stys

The Holidays are just around the corner! IRCC Gift Certicates are available. When you don’t know what to get your neighbor, remember that IRCC oers Gift Certicates for our own amenities and services, including: The At Ease Club, Pro Shop and Housekeeping Services.

Indian River Colony Club 3 Design Center Have you noticed all the remodeling projects going on the community? Well they all started here at the IRCC Design Center. The Design Center helps to make your project much easier, from the selection of choosing an IRCC approved contractor through the final inspection. Each home in IRCC has its own file filled with a wealth of information about the home and this office is dedicated to keeping all the information current. Residents can assist with this task by submitting a copy of the contract/invoice showing color, finish, style, type, and/or design and project specifics of any interior changes made to the home. This office also works directly with the ARC to assist residents with ARC submissions for all structural wall or exterior modifications to the home. Our member web site has a Design Center section under the Kathy Stilton Documents tab. Here you can access the IRCC Approved Contractors list, the IRCC Residential Remodeling policy, and the IRCC Home Painting policy. So remember, for all you home projects, come visit the Design Center and see what we can do for you.

Food & Safety: Organic/Natural Meats

On the continuation on the information about the words “organic or natural”–this time we are focusing on meat and poultry products. The USDA has defined the legal use of certain labels on these products. Here are the areas defined by the USDA: Free range or free roaming-the animals such as pigs, poultry and cows have been allowed access to the outside. Natural- products contain no artificial ingredients or added color and has been minimally processed which means not smoked, roasted, frozen or ground. The main selling point of any naturally raised meat product is the absence of sub-therapeutic antibiotics in the feed. It use to be that natural meats were sold by the producer at farmers’ markets or marketed directly to local health food stores but now large corporate food companies are introducing natural meat product lines into grocery stores. No hormones administered-this label may be used on beef products if the producer Monica Wiseman can document that no hormones have been used in raising the animals. Hormones are not allowed in pork or poultry. No antibiotics-this term may be used on red meat and poultry if the animals were raised without antibiotics; antibiotics are commonly fed to animals to promote growth and prevent disease. Organically raised meat and poultry must meet these basic criteria: livestock must be fed 100% organically grown feed (grains) and/or forage (pasture), no synthetic hormones or vaccinations, no synthetic pesticides (herbicides or insecticides) on pastures, no use of sewage sludge for fertilization of pastures, no feeding of genetically modified grains and no irradiation of final meat products; these are just a few of the major criteria spelled out for production of organic meats. In addition organic farmers and producers must be certified through the USDA and (At Ease Club- continued) are regularly inspected by a third-party organization or individuals who have been accredited by the USDA and detailed records are needed for certification. There is so much more information on natural/organic meats and if you wish to learn more go to the following website: http://www.fsis.usda.gov/factsheets/meat_&_poultry_labeling_terms/index.asp

Another Christmas season is upon us, which is a time for joy and family gatherings. It is also a time for celebrating our faith and reflecting on both the past and the future. We here at the IRCC are indeed a family who care for each other and like any family, celebrate the happy times and come together to support each other when sickness or other problems challenge our well-being. The IRCC chapel foundation was established as an integral part of the IRCC to help facilitate that fellowship within our community. To do this we provide weekly multi-denominational Christian worship services and minister to the spiritual needs of the residents of the IRCC and others who wish to join our fellowship. Our chaplains are very active in our community, providing ministerial support to those in need of spiritual help, but also stimulate fellowship activities as well as providing support for memorial services, funerals, weddings, and any other activity where there is a need for a minister. The past year has seen much change as a result of the activities of the IRCC Chapel. We had the first baptism at the IRCC. We were blessed to have a new pastor (chaplain) Al Bielenberg and the continued services of Reverend Dr. Marlene Walters. Many of our congregation have volunteered to upgrade our activities including typing and reproducing copies of sermons and placing them in the library so those who could not attend the Sunday service would have access. Additionally, Pastor Al has recorded a number of his sermons onto disks, available in the library along with donated books. Fellowship activities now include chapel brunches each month and weekly bible studies. The Chapel Foundation has continued financial support to The Daily Bread and the South Brevard Sharing Center. This year we initiated continuing support with the monthly food drive, which has been much appreciated. This year our congregation has almost doubled. We feel that as folks discover what we offer, it will continue to grow. This year we added hymnals, a hymnal storage cart, and other items. Next year, we will also be upgrading our support equipment and facilities, including a small addition to Colony Hall (266 sq. ft.) for a small office and space to store our altar and support equipment. All of this is paid for from our congregational offerings All of us from the Chapel Foundation wish you a merry Christmas and a wonderful new year. God bless you all.

For The Birds by AA It’s a good feeling to know others like Chip Megica will jump in to do this column, as he did for October. Thanks, Chip, for the delightful column! I thought his story of the anhinga “climbing” the tree to his nest was fascinating! It takes a lot of careful watching to observe that kind of unusual behavior, and birders are good at that! Don B. and Robin were delighted to note the return of the Painted Buntings exactly on October 1st. Don had planted viburnums behind his yard, which gives the small buntings’ good cover before jumping over to his feeders. (This behind Goldrush.) Gretchen, on Mayflower, had flocks of delightful warblers flitting through her backyard, during the weeks of late September and early October. Peterson, in one of his early books called them “confusing fall warblers” and “confusing spring war- blers”, there are so many (confusing) kinds of them! And they are passing through – so quickly that I got my special feeder and seed out to late – they’d moved on to southern climes.

The 15th Annual Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival will be held January 25th-30th, 2012, at the Brevard Community College North Campus in Titusville, Florida. The campus is on Route 1, on the north side of Titusville, on the right, near the hospital. Contact the Festival office by phone 800-460-2664 or 321-268-5224 or by email [email protected]. The lectures are specific and full of fascinating information but you must sign up early as they fill up. Bird watching trips and use of camera trips are packed full of fun. Bring cameras, binoculars, water, cell phones, light rain gear and scopes. I have just received the brochure listing all the activities and will be sending in my registration. Call me at 757-3125, if you are interested.
