James D. Richardson Award JAMES D. RICHARDSON HONOUR AWARD RECIPIENTS JAMES D. RICHARDSON BEM 1910‐1987 Jim Richardson was one of the most beloved and respected members of Lions in the formative years of the Association in Australia. He served in the Royal Australian Air force during the 1939‐45 world war before establishing himself in the Brunswick ‐ Mullumbimby area of New South Wales. Jim was the second District Governor to be elected in Australia in 1956‐57 and the first Australian to serve as a Director on the International Board of Directors in 1958. He was recognised internationally for his magnificent oratory, which held people spellbound at conventions and gatherings of Lions. The growth of new clubs (fifty‐two) during his year as District Governor was never approached again by any District Governor. The demands he placed upon himself meant that he travelled enormous distances by road so that he could visit all his Clubs, attend to Association and other business, as well as run his hotel with the great support of his wife Pam. Jim suffered a Cerebral Thrombosis whilst attending the International Board meeting in New Orleans in 1959 and although he recovered after a long convalescence, he had lost his capacity to speak. He was never capable of carrying on a conversation or making a speech but continued to work for Lions at club level and attended conventions. James D. Richardson BEM was one of the most dedicated and respected early leaders of Lions in Australia. In recognition of him being our first Australian International Director, the Australian Lions Foundation has instituted the James D Richardson Honour Award. A donation of $500 to the Foundation enables the donor to request this Award for presentation to a worthy recipient. RECIPIENTS OF JAMES D. Murray has achieved success at all levels of coaching. He led Penrith to a Reserve Grade Premiership in 1987; took Illawarra to a major semi-final and Tooheys Challenge Cup victory in 1992; coached the Hunter Mariners to an unlikely World Club Challenge final berth in 1997; was the brains behind Leeds’ English Super League triumph in 1999; and more recently oversaw the Sydney Roosters go within a whisker of notching their first premiership in 25 years.

  • Les Boyd RUGBY LEAGUE
Les Boyd RUGBY LEAGUE I’m glad I was never on the field at the same time as Les Boyd. Even team-mates were a little wary of the dynamo, who played the game with brutality, remarkable timing and agility. Les, one of "The Invincibles" of 1982, could well be the toughest bugger ever to don a Rugby League shirt and he was feared whenever he played. The Second Rower was once described as 'fat, slow and predictable' which was about as wrong as any critic could be. Boyd’s talent and work ethic saw him selected for Origin eight times and for his country 17 times. It’s true that Boyd's volatile nature on the field (in contrast to his quiet off-field nature) saw him sent to the sin-bin more often than most players. But no-one could say he gave anything less than 100% in battle. There are some legendary incidents in which Boyd took centre stage. In the opening game of the 1983 Origin series at Lang Park, Boyd and Daryl Brohman had a ‘coming together’. During that same game, Boyd and Manly team mate Paul Vautin had a ‘tete-a tete’. In 1984 while playing for Manly, Boyd and Canterbury hooker Billy Johnstone ‘clashed’, resulting in a rather long ‘holiday’ for Les. Yes, Les Boyd played close to the edge. But his record speaks volumes for his influence on the game. And boy, does he have some stories to tell about his time as the toughest bugger ever to don a Rugby League shirt! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53QyIl1N1G8 www.thekfaktor.com .

  • Castleford Tigers Visa World Club Championship 1997
CASTLEFORD TIGERS VISA WORLD CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 1997 In the mid 1990s, the game of Rugby League was in a state of upheaval in Australia, as Kerry Packer's Optus Vision and Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation battled for the broadcasting rights and ultimately control of the top-level professional Rugby League in the Southern Hemisphere. During this time, several teams broke away from the Australian Rugby League (ARL) to form a separate competition called Superleague(SL) and in 1997 a World Club Championship competition was held between all the Superleague teams in Australia and Europe. The games were played on a home and away basis with the top 6 teams in the European league each playing 3 teams from Australia and New Zealand. The other 6 teams playing 2 teams from Australia. The early matches were played in groups, the leading teams in each group then progressed to sudden death play-offs. As Castleford Tigers were in the lower half of the League, they were selected to play 2 teams, Hunter Mariners and Perth Western Reds. These were newly created teams which existed for only a short period. Nevertheless, they did possess some very good players. The competition was very expensive to run and was far from a success, with low attendances at the games and estimated financial losses of about 5 million Australian dollars. The Southern Hemisphere teams proved far too strong for their European counterparts and many matches were too one-sided to be competitive. In Round One, Wigan were the only Northern Hemisphere team to win their match.

The finals - held at the new venue of Hillingdon Sports and Leisure Centre - were wonderful and we were lucky enough to have good weather. The event went like clockwork, due to the great number of volunteers who knew their tasks and went about them with confidence. I would like to thank all the volunteers, the RAF staff, especially Damian Clayton, the RFL staff, Carnegie staff, my elcome to the 2009/10 English Schools colleagues in ESRL and Barrie McDermott, WRugby League handbook.
