°HOPE in Story and photos Dope by Sgt. Jason Erickson

With strong gusts ripping across an otherwise glassy Molokai beachfront and a mid-morning sun just starting to make eyebrows gather sweat, a group of Kaneohe Bay and FMFPac Band Marines settled in for a long day of role modeling, Feb. 29. By the time they took off their helmets and stacked their weapons at the far end of this extended baseball field just outside Kaunakakai, the leathernecks had already marched as part of a victory parade through town. But unlike so many throughout the islands just a year ago, this parade did not honor returning Desert Storm warriors. It honored those of "Operation Tropical Storm," a war with a far craftier enemy: the temptation and addiction of drugs. The veterans of that war range from Honolulu policemen to convicts, teachers, parents and volunteers. Now Marines are joining the alliance to bolster an army which marches to the slogan: "No Hope in Dope." But those in the trenches are the children. They, perhaps more than anyone, have the toughest battle still ahead. Attendance, considering the rural nature of the community and the tiny size of Kaunakakai, (Molokai's main town) was described by program founder and HPD Officer Leighton Kaonohi to be outstanding. In addition to a day-long lineup of local entertainers, concession stands sold food, "No Hope in Dope" T-shirts and crafts to help raise funds for the program. Meanwhile, across the field, children and adults alike were enthralled by a Marine Corps static display consisting of several weapons organic to an infantry battalion, a CH-46 from HMM -262, and a CH-53D from HMH-463. Many of the Marines seemed equally enthralled by their curious hosts. LCpl. David Vandermeulen -- surrounded by youngsters checking out his mortar, climbing on his (Top left) LCpl. When he first got the inspiration to start it, through repetitive dreams that provided even the slogan, Kaonohi had tough days ahead of him, with some difficulties even convincing HPD to let him do the project. That was in 1987 and now it is sky-rocketing into something great, he added. "I reached out to God for some sort of guidance how I could help the community, and he gave me my direction," Kaonohi explained. He talked as an encircling group of youngsters waited their turn to get his signature on a photo of him in his "Officer Honolulu" costume -- the garb of his predecessors from the 1800s. The age-old costume illustrates his plan to bring back the sense of family and community he feels is so quickly slipping away as drugs take root. "Molokai is one of the few places left where those bonds still exist," he said. "That's why we came here first, to give them added strength to keep those values intact and throw back the tide." From the looks of the crowd, those bonds are still firm. The sense of family and community spirit known in Hawaii as "ohana" seemed as natural to the island as the sand along her shore and the salty sea-breeze rustling her palm trees.
