A Review by Ally Lee, University of Warwick Martin O’Shaughnessy’s Laurent Cantet is the latest edition of—and the author’s second contribution to—the Manchester University Press French Film Directors series after the publication in 2000 of his study on the films of Jean Renoir. The series currently features an impressive forty volumes and this assessment of one of France’s most important active filmmakers is a welcome addition. Despite Cantet’s prominence, he has so far been the subject of relatively little scholarly investigation. Previously, only one monograph-length exploration of the director’s oeuvre, Yannick Lebtahi and Isabelle Rousel-Gillet’s stimulating and insightful Pour une méthode d’investigation du cinéma de Laurent Cantet, had been published.

Julian and Nicolas, two priests and long-standing friends, work tirelessly to help the local people. Julian uses his political connections to oversee the construction of a hospital. Nicolas joins him following the failure of a project he was leading in the jungle, after paramilitary forces assassinated members of the community. Deeply troubled, he finds a little comfort with Luciana, a young, attractive, atheist social worker. As Nicolas’ faith weakens, tension and violence between the slum’s drug-dealing cartels grow. And when work on the hospital is halted by ministerial decree, the fuse is lit... DIRECTOR - interview collective of priests known as the “Priests of the Third World”, who also suffered mysterious deaths and disappearances.

  • Il Teatro Significa Vivere Sul Serio Quello Che Gli Altri Nella Vita Recitano Male.”1
1 Introduction “Il teatro significa vivere sul serio quello che gli altri nella vita recitano male.”1 Many years ago a young boy sat with his friend, the son of a lawyer, in the Corte Minorile of Naples, watching as petty criminals about his age were being judged for their offenses. One ragged pick-pocket who had been found guilty demanded to be led away after being sentenced; instead he was left there and his loud pleas were completely disregarded. Unwilling to tolerate this final offense of being treated as though he were invisible, the juvenile delinquent, in an extreme act of rebellion, began smashing the chains around his hands against his own head until his face was a mask of blood. Horrified, the judge finally ordered everybody out of the court. That young boy sitting in court watching the gruesome scene was Eduardo De Filippo and the sense of helplessness and social injustice witnessed left an indelible mark on the impressionable mind of the future playwright. Almost sixty years later, at the Accademia dei Lincei, as he accepted the Premio Internazionale Feltrinelli, one of Italy’s highest literary accolades, De Filippo recalled how it was that this early image of the individual pitted against society was always at the basis of his work: Alla base del mio teatro c’è sempre il conflitto fra individuo e società […] tutto ha inizio, sempre, da uno stimolo emotivo: reazione a un’ingiustizia, sdegno per l’ipocrisia mia e altrui, solidarietà e simpatia umana per una persona o un gruppo di persone, ribellione contro leggi superate e anacronistiche con il mondo di oggi, sgomento di fronte a fatti che, come le guerre, sconvolgono la vita dei popoli.2 The purpose of this thesis is twofold: to provide for the first time a translation of Eduardo’s last play, Gli esami non finiscono mai (Exams Never End), and to trace the development of his dramatic style and philosophy in order to appreciate their culmination 1 Enzo Biagi, “Eduardo, tragico anche se ride,” Corriere della Sera , 6 March 1977.

When La Biennale di Venezia Meets History does not just convey the content that visitors to the Central Pavilion in the Giardini della Biennale will encounter, but also a vision. Disquiet serves as a driving force behind research, which requires dialogue to verify its theories and needs history to absorb knowledge. This is what La Biennale does and will continue to do as it seeks to reinforce a methodology that creates even stronger bonds between its own disciplines. There are six Muses at the Biennale: Art, Architecture, Cinema, Theatre, Music and Dance, given a voice through the great events that fill Venice and the world every year. There are the places that serve as venues for all of La Biennale’s activities: the Giardini, the Arsenale, the Palazzo del Cinema and other cinemas on the Lido, the theatres, the city of Venice itself.

The Italian designer, one of the founders of Made in Italy BIOGRAPHY The Italian designer, one of the founders of Made in Italy BIOGRAPHY Born and raised in Rome, Piattelli attended the well-known Visconti “liceo” there before continuing his stu- dies, in law, at the Roman La Sapienza Univerity. He began his career helping in his father’s atelier in Piazza S. Sylvestro in Rome, which, when he started, already had a select and international clientele. Within only a few years time, Piattelli’s work was noticed by clothing and fabric manufacturers which lead to collaboration with important domestic and international fashion houses. Contracts were signed with: D’Avenza, Ellesse, Petronius, Lanerossi and Sanremo. He designed collections for Burberry’s of London and D’Urban of Tokyo. He collaborated with the NASA Space Mission designing knitwear for the astronauts. He created the uniforms for Zambia Airlines male and female flight attendants and for the hostesses of Dunhill of London. He made the uniforms for Alitalia’s male ground personnel and he dressed the Italian National Olympic Teams in Mexico City in 1968 and Atlanta in 1996. Piattelli Corners were opened in some of the most prestigious luxury department stores and shops such as Liberty’s in London, Barney’s in New York, Louis in Boston, The Executive in Johannesburg in South Africa. In Asia, Piattelli Corners were opened Hong Kong, Bangkok and Tokyo in Takashimaya, Mitsukoshi and Sei- bu luxury department stores. An invitation from the government of the Chinese People’s Republic to do a study of the clothing manufac- turing industry lead to a new adventure – a joint venture with the clothing manufacturing industry in China.
