(1) In the 18th century flat breads called “Pizzas” were sold on the streets and in the markets of Naples. (2) However, the queen loved the bread. (3) In Italy almost everybody loves pizza. (4) It was the visit of a queen that made the pizza popular as we know and enjoy it today. (5) Pizza finally spread to America, where it was little known until after World War II. (6) Pizza, like so many other foods, was not invented in the country for which it is now famous. (7) The pizza in the USA is good, but the Italian pizza is better. Schulstufe l methodisch-didaktisches 084 UNTERLAGE FÜR SCHÜLERINNEN CODE The history of pizza 6 You probably always thought Pizza was strictly an Italian creation, but it was the early Greeks who baked large, round and flat breads which they topped with various items such as olive oils, spices and other things. They were not topped with anything. Since they were relatively cheap to make, were tasty and filling, they were sold to the poor all over Naples1 by street vendors. In about 1889, Queen Margherita of Italy, accompanied by her husband, Umberto I, took an inspection tour of her Italian Kingdom. During her travels around Italy she saw many people, especially the poor farmers, eating this large, flat bread. Curious, the queen ordered her servants to bring her one of these “Pizza” breads. The Queen loved the bread and would eat it every time she was out amongst the people, which caused some surprise in Court circles as it was not expected from a Queen to dine on poor people’s food. So she called Raffaele Esposito, a Naples pizza baker, to the royal palace and ordered him to bake a selection of pizzas for her pleasure. To honour the queen Raffaele decided to make a very special pizza just for her. He baked a pizza topped with2 tomatoes, Mozzarella Cheese, and fresh basil3 to represent the colours of the Italian flag – red, white, and green. So the tradition of the “Pizza Margherita” was started, which has lasted to this very day in Naples and has now spread throughout the world. While fighting in Italy, many American and European soldiers tasted pizza for the first time. It was love at first taste! Italian immigrants had been selling pizzas in their American stores for some time, but it was the returning soldiers that made the pizza a success in cities all over the continent. Pepperoni and Cheese is the favourite combination, especially with the younger set, and is second only to the hamburger as this continent’s favourite food.
