Dear Readers,

A lot has changed since we published our first edition of the Development Zone Directory back in 2017. But China remains one of the top investment hotspots in the world, despite ongoing trade and other disputes the country faces. While it is true that companies and countries are relocating or building up additional supply chains to lessen their dependence on China, it is also a fact that no other country has the industrial capacity, growing middle class and growth potential.

The Chinese market attracts the most foreign direct investment and it well may do so for many years to come, given the large untapped markets in the central and western part of the country. Earlier this year, Premier Li Keqiang mentioned that there are 600 million Chinese citizens living with RMB 1,000 of monthly disposable income. While this may sounds surprising, it also shows the potential that Chinese inner regions have for the future.

Investing in China and selling to the Chinese consumers is something that makes sense for companies from around the world. 3. Special Economic Zones (SEZ) - First type of economic zones established by the Central Government in 1978 - A series of preferential policies to attract foreign investors, such as autonomous 111operating rights, tax incentives etc. - Financing, commercial, and tourism facilities were also built to accommodate the coming 111foreign investors

4. Export Processing Zones (EPZ) - Exclusively used to manufacture, process and assemble export commodities - All or most of the products manufactured in these zones are for export purposes - Significant differences from FTZ are the size and scope, as part of larger development zones, EPZs are relatively small and allow only export-oriented companies the chance to invest

10. Comprehensive Development Zones (CDZ) - Covering a large area of a few hundred sq km and bolstering a variety of industries - Upon the completion of their development, these zones are transformed into new towns or urban areas, such as the West Area of Zhuhai and Suzhou Industrial Park.

Shanghai is one of the four direct-controlled municipalities of China and is one of the largest cities worldwide with a population of more than 24 million inhabitants. Jiangsu is an eastern-central coastal province in China. It is one of the leading provinces in manufacturing electronics and apparel items. The capital is Nanjing, which is only a 90-minute train ride away from Shanghai. Jiangsu is the third smallest and the most densely populated of all provinces in China. After the southern province Guangdong, Jiangsu has the second highest GDP of all Chinese provinces. Its proximity to Shanghai and its robust infrastructure allowed the province to grow fast in the recent years, attracting large domestic and foreign investment.

Established in 1992, Changzhou National Hi-Tech District (CND) is among the first group of State- level Hi-Tech Zones, ranking 3rd in Jiangsu Province. TPDZ borders Baoshan District of Shanghai to the southeast. It is the closest state-level development zone to Shanghai. The primary industries in TPDZ are Healthcare & Medicine, Functional Materials, High-end Equipment Manufacturing, Petrochemical, Light Industry & Papermaking, Electrical Energy, Aerospace Parts, New-energy Vehicles, New-generation Information Technology, and Port Logistics & Commerce.
