Match background

It is advantage Real Madrid CF as two of Europe's premier clubs resume their quest for a place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals but the late scored by at the Santiago Bernabéu leaves the tie tantalisingly poised.

• Two first-half goals from Raúl González put the Spanish side firmly in the ascendancy and when made it 3-1 the prospects were not good for the German champions. However, Van Bommel's strike with just two minutes remaining, adding to Lucio's goal which had cancelled out Raúl's early opener, put the tie back into the melting pot.

• Madrid suffered their heaviest away defeat in the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Bayern, losing 4-1 in the 1999/00 second group stage - ironically their heaviest home defeat in the competition (4-2) was sustained against the same opponents in the return. Iván Helguera scored for Madrid in Germany, Raúl at home, while Mehmet Scholl was on target in both games for Bayern.

• Madrid went on to exact swift revenge, removing Bayern in the semi-finals on their way to a second UEFA Champions League crown - even though they again lost the away leg - and they will be hoping they are the team left celebrating again at the conclusion of their first appearance at the Fußball Arena München.

• That was one of seven knockout ties between the sides before they were paired again this season. Madrid prevailed on four occasions with Bayern, who are seeking a fifth continental crown this term, coming out on top on that lone occasion they were paired in the same group. In the 2001/02 quarter-final, Helguera and scored to give Madrid an aggregate victory after a 2-0 home win. That came after had scored to give the Bavarian side the edge in the first game that ended 2-1. In the 2003/04 first knockout round it was Zinédine Zidane's goal in the second leg that sent the Merengues through after and had found the net in Munich to leave the first game all square.

• That last appearance was the only time in eight visits in Europe's premier club competition that the nine-time European champions have avoided defeat at Bayern. Between 1999 and 2001 the German side racked up three 2-1 wins but in only one of those knockout ties did Bayern make progress. The outfit had been just as successful at home against these opponents in the European Champion Clubs' Cup, winning semi-finals in 1976 and 1987 (another 4-1 home win). Bayern also defeated Madrid 3-2 at home in the quarter-finals in 1987/88, only to exit the stage following a 2-0 loss in the Spanish capital.

• Bayern have twice played European finals against Spanish sides and boast a 100 per cent record. They lifted the 1973/74 European Cup after a 5-1 aggregate win over Club Atlético de Madrid and won on penalties against Valencia CF in the 2000/01 UEFA Champions League.

• Madrid have contested three European finals against German sides and have come out on top each time. They were the 1959/60 European Cup which brought them a 7-3 success against , the 1985/86 UEFA Cup which they won 5-3 on aggregate against 1. FC Köln and the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League, a 2-1 defeat of .

• Madrid won the 1959 European Cup in Stuttgart, running out 2-0 winners against Champagne

• Bayern won Group B with 12 points but that was largely built on their away form. At home they managed only one win, 4-0 against FC Spartak Moskva, with their other two games ending in draws. Madrid finished second in Group E with eleven points and recorded all three results away from home. They lost their first encounter 2-0 at , before winning 4-1 at FC Steaua Bucuresti and drawing 2-2 at FC Dynamo Kyiv.

• For one of these sides there will be the opportunity to erase the memory of last season's first knockout round tie. Madrid went out after losing 1-0 to Arsenal FC at home, a deficit they were unable to retrieve in north London. Bayern drew their home game with AC 1-1 but were beaten 4-1 in Italy.

• The winning team will advance to the 9 March draw in Athens for the quarter-finals and semi-finals. The Greek capital will also stage the final on Wednesday 23 May.

The only coach besides to win the European Champion Clubs' Cup with two different teams, he guided Dortmund to UEFA Champions League glory in 1997 and repeated the feat with Bayern four years later. Hitzfeld made a surprise return to Bayern in January 2007 and will hope for a repeat of his first, -laden, spell in charge.

Having earned his coaching spurs in Switzerland, Hitzfeld accepted the challenge of reviving BV Borussia Dortmund's fortunes in 1991 and made an immediate impact, leading the club to second place in the Bundesliga and the UEFA Cup final in his first two seasons. In 1995 he guided Dortmund to the title - their first silverware in 29 years - which was retained the following year. The high point of his reign came in 1997 when Juventus were defeated 3-1 in the UEFA Champions League final in Munich.

FC Bayern München came calling in 1998 and the title was secured in his first season - one of four such successes in Hitzfeld's six campaigns - although 1998/99 ended in the disappointment of a UEFA Champions League final defeat by Manchester United FC. Two years later, Bayern were back to defeat Valencia CF on penalties in Milan. The domestic double of 2002/03 proved Hitzfeld's last hurrah, and he stood down at the end of the following season to be replaced by , but returned when the latter was sacked on 31 January 2007. Real Madrid CF: Fabio Capello Date of birth: 18 June 1946 Nationality: Italian Playing career: Spal 1907, AS Roma, Juventus, AC Milan Coaching career: AC Milan (twice), Real Madrid CF (twice), AS Roma, Juventus

When Real Madrid CF needed a coach to end a run of three barren seasons, it was no surprise they turned to Fabio Capello. Having won the title in a one-year stay at Madrid in 1996/97, and achieved glory at AC Milan, AS Roma and Juventus, he is rightly regarded as one of the world's foremost coaches. The Italian's combination of passion and pragmatism has proved a winning formula, bringing league championships to each of the four teams he has managed. As a player, Capello enjoyed successful spells at Roma, Juventus and Milan, earning 32 caps for Italy.

While his coaching acumen is beyond question, he has always had the services of top players to turn his tactical vision into reality. Milan claimed four Serie A crowns in five seasons between 1991 and 1996, including an unbeaten campaign in 1991/92. Along the way, they had contributions from some of that club's greatest servants, including Dutch trio , and , and defensive legends Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini. They also lifted the 1994 UEFA Champions League, beating FC Barcelona 4-0 in the final. Capello then had a brief stay at Madrid before returning to Milan.

Two terms later, his next stop was Roma, who had conquered Serie A just twice before. In 2000 he splashed out on Gabriel Batistuta, whose goals helped bring the title back to the capital. With the Giallorossi suffering financial difficulties, Capello left for Juventus in May 2004 and immediately snapped up Emerson and Fabio Cannavaro. They starred as Capello's team landed the Scudetto in 2004/05 and 2005/06, while never being ranked lower than first. Both men accompanied Capello to Madrid as Juventus were subsequently stripped of both championships in the Italian sporting-fraud trial.

His first assignment was in November 1993 – a UEFA European Under-21 Championship match between San Marino and England. He then officiated at various youth international tournaments before a trip to Australia for two matches at the Sydney Olympics.

Micheľ, who enjoys tennis in his spare time and has a love of history, has been refereeing UEFA Champions League matches since 1998, and was involved in five during the 2005/06 campaign. Already in the 2006/07 season, he has taken charge of a high-profile fixture with the all-British affair that saw Manchester United FC defeat Celtic FC 3-2 on Matchday 1. Trophy tour The UEFA Champions League trophy is touring Asia for the first time over the next six weeks, visiting five countries to celebrate Europe's premier club competition - while also highlighting the huge interest in football in that region. The UEFA Champions League Trophy Tour - presented by sponsors Heineken - kicked off in the Japanese capital Tokyo and moved on to Jakarta, Indonesia until last Sunday. The next dates will be: Hong Kong (China, 16-18 March), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia, 22-25 March), and the Thai cities of Bangkok (30 March-1 April) and Pattaya (6-8 April).

"By creating initiatives like the UEFA Champions League Trophy Tour, we are making the UEFA Champions League experience more accessible to local football fans and enabling them to share in the magic of Europe's best club competition," explained Michele Centenaro, UEFA's head of club competitions. "It builds on the UEFA Champions Gallery and UEFA Young Champions tournament to bring fans across the world closer to the passion and excitement of our competition."

Draw/match dates The 2006/07 UEFA Champions League first knockout round draw was held on 15 December at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. The eight group winners were drawn against the eight runners-up into two-legged ties to be played on 20/21 February and 6/7 March. Clubs from the same country could not be drawn against each other while teams who met in the group stage were also kept apart. Group runners-up play the first leg at home. The quarter-finals will follow on 3/4 and 10/11 April, with the semi-finals on 24/25 April and 1/2 May. The draw for these rounds will be held on 9 March in Athens.

Player registration The 2006/07 UEFA Champions League regulations confirm that for all matches from the start of the first knockout round, a club was allowed to register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registration had to be completed by 1 February. One player from the above quota of three who has played in UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may have been exceptionally registered, provided that the player has not been fielded in the same competition for another club and/or for another club that is currently in the same competition.

Competition facts

UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?

• Teams have come back from a first-leg deficit to go through to the next stage on 16 occasions. The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in 2003/04 when the Spanish club fought back from a 4-1 defeat at AC Milan to win 4-0 at home and progress to the semi-finals.

• Twelve ties have been decided on the , including five where the triumphant team lost the first leg. Last season, Villarreal CF beat Rangers FC and FC Internazionale Milano by this method in the first knockout round and quarter-finals respectively.

• Manchester United FC hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 4-0 home success against FC Porto in the 1996/97 quarter-finals, eventually going through by that margin after a goalless return.

• Only five ties have gone to penalties. Four of these have come in finals – 1996, 2001, 2003 and 2005. The only two-legged tie to be decided on spot-kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory against Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

• In all, ten ties have required extra-time. Along with the five ties mentioned above, four quarter-finals and one first knockout round encounter have also needed an additional 30 minutes in an attempt to determine a winner.

• No new countries are represented in the knockout phase of this season's competition but 17 nations have had teams participate at least once since 1992/93. Three clubs - AS Roma, Celtic FC and LOSC Lille Métropole - are all appearing for the first time.

• Real Madrid CF have set a new record for knockout stage qualification in successive seasons. This is the tenth straight season since 1997/98 that they have made it to this stage, moving them ahead of Manchester United, who appeared nine times in a row between 1996/97 and 2004/05. Overall, they have now played in the knockout stage eleven times, one more than United and FC Bayern München.

• The 2004/05 first knockout round encounter between Lyon and Werder Bremen featured more goals over its two legs than any previous tie – a total of 12 as Lyon defeated Bremen 10-2.

• There has never been a tie ending goalless after two legs. Seven have finished 1-0 on aggregate, Arsenal FC featured in two of them in 2005/06 as they overcame Madrid and Villarreal on their way to the final.

• Athens was awarded the 23 May 2007 final after a decision by the UEFA Executive Committee at its meeting in Tallinn, Estonia in April 2005. The Greek capital will play host to its first European final since the venue was rebuilt to stage the 2004 Olympic Games. The stadium previously provided the backdrop to the UEFA Champions League showpiece of 1993/94, when Milan were 4-0 winners against FC Barcelona. Prior to 1994, Athens also saw the European Champion Clubs' Cup lifted in 1982/83, the year after the venue was first inaugurated. On that occasion, Hamburger SV beat Juventus FC 1-0. The ground also staged the 1986/87 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final when AFC Ajax were 1-0 winners against 1. FC Lokomotiv Leipzig.

• UEFA Champions League: All-time records Biggest wins 7-0: Juventus v Olympiacos CFP (10.12.2003) 6-0: v PFC CSKA Moskva (17.03.1993) 6-0: Leeds United AFC v Besiktas JK (26.09.2000) 6-0: Real Madrid CF v KRC Genk (25.09.2002)

UEFA club competition milestones • Bayern are chasing their first appearance in the European Champion Clubs' Cup final - and their eighth overall - since their penalty shoot-out defeat of Valencia CF at the end of the 2000/01 season having recovered from the heartbreak of conceding two goals in added time against Manchester United FC in the final two years previously.

• The German side, together with AFC Ajax, dominated the European football landscape during the 1970s with three successive victories in the competition against Club Atlético de Madrid (1973/74), Leeds United AFC (1974/75) and AS Saint-Etienne (1975/76). They also played in the 1981/82 and 1986/87 finals, but lost out to Aston Villa FC (1-0) and FC Porto (2-1) respectively.

• Both Bayern and Juventus hold the distinct record of being the only teams to compete in the European Champion Clubs' Cup final in each of the last four decades. Bayern's record is as follows: 2000/01: FC Bayern München 1-1 Valencia CF (5-4 on penalties after extra time) 1998/99: Manchester United FC 2-1 FC Bayern München 1986/87: FC Bayern München 1-2 FC Porto 1981/82: Aston Villa FC 1-0 FC Bayern München 1975/76: FC Bayern München 1-0 AS Saint-Etienne 1974/75: FC Bayern München 2-0 Leeds United AFC 1973/74: Club Atlético de Madrid 0-4 FC Bayern München (final replay after the two sides drew 1-1 in the final).

UEFA club competition honours • European Champion Clubs' Cup: 1973/74, 1974/75, 1975/76, 2000/01 • UEFA Cup: 1995/96 • UEFA Cup Winners' Cup: 1966/67 • European/South American Cup: 1976, 2001

Ten-year record (including current season) • Bayern are competing in their tenth successive UEFA Champions League having won the competition in the 2000/01 season. The German side have advanced to the knockout stage in the past nine seasons with the exception of their 2002/03 campaign. With three victories and three draws from their six outings in this season's group stage, the German side topped their group, two points clear of FC Internazionale Milano.

2005/06 season Domestic record: Bayern retained their Bundesliga crown in fine style, although had just a five-point margin on Werder Bremen as opposed to their 14-point lead over FC Schalke 04 in the previous campaign. It was Bayern's seventh Bundesliga title in ten seasons and their 19th since the current league format came into being at the start of the 1963/64 campaign. It was enough, of course, to earn an automatic group-stage berth in the UEFA Champions League.

European record: Bayern finished second behind Juventus in their group, having traded 2-1 home wins with the Italian club. Having beaten SK Rapid Wien at home and away, and Club Brugge KV in Munich, it was an away draw against the latter club that ultimately cost Bayern top spot. That proved costly as they met AC Milan in the first knockout round and a 4-1 second-leg defeat saw them eliminated 5-2 on aggregate.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Away goals rule: For ties in the first knockout round, quarter-finals and semi-finals, the team which scores the greater aggregate of goals in the two matches qualifies for the next round. If the two teams involved in a tie score the same number of goals over the two legs, the team which scores more away goals qualifies for the next stage. If this procedure does not produce a result, i.e, if the two teams score the same number of goals at home and away, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes shall be played at the end of the second leg. If during extra time, both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (i.e. the visiting club qualifies). If no goals are scored during extra time, kicks from the penalty mark determine which team qualifies.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list will be reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubs from simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given a greater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as a consequence.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated budgeted income for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League is €750m – higher than the 2005/06 campaign revenue which amounted to CHF943m (approx. €610m).

Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the total revenue received from television and commercial contracts concluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will go to the 32 clubs taking part in the group stage of Europe's premier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent is earmarked for European football and remains with UEFA to cover organisational and administrative costs, as well as for solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.

It is also stipulated that participating clubs will receive 82 per cent of any revenue received from the same stream in excess of € 530m, with the remaining 18 per cent allocated to UEFA for European football. In addition, 50 per cent of the revenue received from new media contracts concluded by UEFA will also be available for distribution to the clubs, and the remaining 50 per cent will be allocated to the above-mentioned European football portion/quota.

The gross income for 2006/07 is estimated at €750m, and according to projections, will be made up of € 743.3m from TV and commercial contracts and €6.7m from new media contracts.

The fixed amount to the clubs is €276.6m. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive a starting bonus of €2m. In addition, they will receive a match bonus of €400,000 per match. Performance bonuses will amount to €600,000 for a win and €300,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €2.2m, the eight quarter-finalists €2.5m each and the four semi-finalists €3m each. The UEFA Champions League winners will receive €7m, and the runners-up €4m.

Last updated 05.03.2007 18:07:27 CET www.uefa.com Page 34 FC Bayern München v Real Madrid CF MATCH PRESS KIT

This means that a total minimum amount of €4.4m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €22.7m, not counting the market pool share and gate receipts.

The remaining €270.4m will be distributed according to the proportional value of each TV market represented by the clubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League, and to be split among the number of teams – four, three, two or one – participating from a given association.
