Through various sponsorships and community involvement we at BMO are committed to helping our local arts communities. BMO is proud to support the Arts Club Theatre Company. Welcome Welcome back to the Arts Club Theatre Company. On behalf of all of us here, we can honestly say we’ve missed you immensely. Thank you for sharing part of your summer with us. And there will be more to come this fall! As we write this, we’re finalizing a 5-show series at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage to start in mid-November that will blow your socks off. Here’s a sneak peek: our first show back at the Stanley is Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol! Set during the 1930s, in East Tennessee, this heartwarming musical imagines Ebenezer Scrooge as the greedy owner of a mining company town whose past literally comes back to haunt him. Charles Dickens’s classic characters and Dolly Parton’s one-of-a- kind songwriting talents come together for a holiday event made for sharing with loved ones. Season tickets to this new holiday musical tradition plus four more productions will go on sale in early August. Look out for our announcement and get ready for a season of entertainment at our flagship venue. We are also delighted to announce that Ashlie is going to become a mom at the end of July! While she’s on parental leave, Rachel Peake has joined our team as our new Associate Artistic Director, Programming. Rachel will execute Ashlie’s artistic vision of our 2021–2022 season. Originally hailing from Saskatchewan, Rachel is a freelance director and dramaturg of theatre and opera. Most recently, she was the Associate Artistic Director of the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, where she led their New Play Development initiatives. We are excited to welcome both Baby Corcoran and Rachel to our theatre family! And we are also happy to open our Granville Island Stage on August 5 with Beneath Springhill: The Maurice Ruddick Story, an inspiring Canadian story told through song. We hope to see you there! Thanks for joining us, thanks for your support, and welcome back—healthy, happy, and ready for theatre to sweep its magic over you again. • Falls Around Her
Baswewe Films and The Film Farm Present FALLS AROUND HER Starring Tantoo Cardinal Written and Directed by Darlene Naponse PRESS KIT SYNOPSIS Falls Around Her follows Mary Birchbark (Tantoo Cardinal), a legendary singer who returns to the vast wilderness of her reserve to reconnect with the land and her community. Mary begins to sense that someone might be watching her. Unsure of what is real and what is imagined, Mary embraces isolation as she explores the psychological impact of her past and present. PRODUCTION NOTES Work and Walk in a Good Way Honour the Seven Grandfathers teachings: Honesty – Wisdom – Respect – Bravery – Humility – Truth – Love Those words and several others would accompany Falls Around Her’s first callsheet and would be included in every callsheet during the shoot. For the Anishinaabe people, the Teachings of the Seven Grandfathers is a set of teachings on human conduct toward others. As film crews employ many people from several different backgrounds, it’s a daily reminder to treat all creation with respect. And cast and crew took those words to heart every day and it contributed to a joyful set. Even more amazing given that there was a mix of crew of indigenous and non-indigenous people. The crew for Falls Around Her became an amalgamation of Toronto and Atikameksheng Anishnawbek/Sudbury/North Bay crews along with many indigenous locals. For the locals, it was the biggest production to ever have its home base on the reservation, and they were prepared for the challenge and the collective hard work of all is reflected on-screen.

Thanks for buying my book. That money is MINE. But I worked really hard on this, and I think you’ll enjoy it. First off, a little about this project. When you have success as a stand-up comedian, you quickly get offers to do a humor book. In the past, I always turned these opportunities down, because I thought stand-up was the best medium for me. In my mind, a book wouldn’t be as fun as just using my ideas for stand- up. So why did I decide to write a book about modern romance? A few years ago there was a woman in my life— let’s call her Tanya—and we had hooked up one night in L.A.

AWAY FROM HER is a beautifully moving love story that deals with memory and the circuitous, unnamable paths of a long marriage. Married for 50 years, Grant (Gordon Pinsent) and Fiona’s (Julie Christie) commitment to each other appears unwavering, and their everyday life is full of tenderness and humour. This serenity is broken only by the occasional, carefully restrained reference to the past, giving a sense that this marriage may not always have been such a fairy tale. This tendency of Fiona’s to make such references, along with her increasingly evident memory loss, creates a tension that is usually brushed off casually by both of them. As the lapses become more obvious and dramatic, it is no longer possible for either of them to ignore the fact that Fiona is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Eventually, Fiona decides that it is time for her to enter into Meadowlake, a retirement home that specializes in the disease.
