Laura Cameron “The Great Dreams Pass On” Phyllis Webb’s “Struggles of Silence” “My poems are born out of great struggles of silence,” wrote Phyllis Webb in the Foreword to her 198 volume, Wilson’s Bowl; “This book has been long in coming. Wayward, natural and unnatural silences, my desire for privacy, my critical hesitations, my critical wounds, my dissatisfactions with myself and the work have all contributed to a strange gestation” (9).1 In this frequently cited passage, Webb is referring to the fifteen-year publication gap that divides her forty-year career as a poet. She put out two full volumes before Naked Poems in 1965 and two full volumes after Wilson’s Bowl in 198, but in the interim she produced only a handful of poems that she judged publishable.2 And yet, although it might have appeared from the outside in this period as though Webb had renounced poetry for good, archival evidence—numerous poem drafts in various states of completion, grant applications outlining the projects that she intended to pursue, and radio scripts elaborating on her creative efforts and ideas— reveals that this was not simply a period of absence or withdrawal. On the contrary, the middle years of Webb’s career, her “struggles of silence,” were fertile, eventually fruitful, and integral to her poetic development. The interval was characterized by “dissatisfactions” and “hesitations,” as Webb says, but also—and just as importantly—by ambition and an intense desire to grow and progress as a poet, to expand her vision and to write poetry, as she described it, of “cosmic proportions.”3 The creation of Wilson’s Bowl was “a strange gestation” because Webb’s “progeny” did not mature as expected: Wilson’s Bowl was not the volume that she had initially set out to write. -

1997 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL The 1997 Sundance Film Festival continued to attract crowds, international attention and an appreciative group of alumni fi lmmakers. Many of the Premiere fi lmmakers were returning directors (Errol Morris, Tom DiCillo, Victor Nunez, Gregg Araki, Kevin Smith), whose earlier, sometimes unknown, work had received a warm reception at Sundance. The Piper-Heidsieck tribute to independent vision went to actor/director Tim Robbins, and a major retrospective of the works of German New-Wave giant Rainer Werner Fassbinder was staged, with many of his original actors fl own in for forums. It was a fi tting tribute to both Fassbinder and the Festival and the ways that American independent cinema was indeed becoming international. Baswewe Films and The Film Farm Present FALLS AROUND HER Starring Tantoo Cardinal Written and Directed by Darlene Naponse PRESS KIT SYNOPSIS Falls Around Her follows Mary Birchbark (Tantoo Cardinal), a legendary singer who returns to the vast wilderness of her reserve to reconnect with the land and her community. Mary begins to sense that someone might be watching her. Unsure of what is real and what is imagined, Mary embraces isolation as she explores the psychological impact of her past and present. PRODUCTION NOTES Work and Walk in a Good Way Honour the Seven Grandfathers teachings: Honesty – Wisdom – Respect – Bravery – Humility – Truth – Love Those words and several others would accompany Falls Around Her’s first callsheet and would be included in every callsheet during the shoot. For the Anishinaabe people, the Teachings of the Seven Grandfathers is a set of teachings on human conduct toward others. As film crews employ many people from several different backgrounds, it’s a daily reminder to treat all creation with respect. And cast and crew took those words to heart every day and it contributed to a joyful set. Even more amazing given that there was a mix of crew of indigenous and non-indigenous people. The crew for Falls Around Her became an amalgamation of Toronto and Atikameksheng Anishnawbek/Sudbury/North Bay crews along with many indigenous locals. For the locals, it was the biggest production to ever have its home base on the reservation, and they were prepared for the challenge and the collective hard work of all is reflected on-screen. -

Tracing the trajectory of the Russian Mennonite diaspora, Flyway examines how intergenerational upheaval generates anxieties of place which are mirrored in the human-disrupted migratory patterns of the natural world. Drawing from the rich tradition of the Canadian long poem, from my roots as a third-generation Mennonite immigrant, from eco-poetics, and from ecological research into the impact of climate change on the endangered landscape of Manitoba’s tallgrass prairie, Flyway migrates along geographical, psychological, and affective routes in an attempt to understand complexities of home. -

His formal education eeied after only two years of high scnool. He spent the next years of his life wandering from job to job, spending the war years with the R.C.A.F. He spent some time on the West Coast and in 1956 be returned east.. He has received Canada Council Grants wbich enabled him to t ravel into the interior of British Columbia (1960) and to Baffin Island (1965) and a tour of Greece (1967). He has published 10 books of poetry and edited three books, and has contributed to various magazines. Canadian Studies. Language and Literature MARVIN ORBACH, MERLE AMODEO: CANADIAN POETS, UNIVERSAL POETS M.Sc. Miguel Ángel Olivé Iglesias. Associate Professor. University of Holguín, Cuba Abstract This paper aims at revealing universality in Marvin Orbach, an outstanding Canadian book collector and poet, and Merle Amodeo, an exquisite Canadian poet and writer. Orbach´s poems were taken from Redwing, book published by CCLA Hidden Brook Press, Canada in 2018; and Amodeo´s poems from her book After Love, Library of Congress, USA, 2014. Thus, the paper unveils for the general reader the transcendental scope of these two figures of Canadian culture. In view of the fact that they are able to recreate and memorialize their feelings and contexts where they live, and show their capacities to discern beyond the grid of nature, society and human experience, directly and masterfully exposing them, it can be safely stated that both Orbach and Amodeo reach that point where what is singular in them acquires universality, and in return what is universal crystallizes in their singularity. I enjoyed great English and American classics so much that I even memorized many of their poems. It proved very useful later in my professional career, as I would read excerpts from poems to my students in class. Canada, and Canadian poets, had less presence on the curricular map at the time. Fortunately, I had the chance to become acquainted with Canadian poetry through the Canada Cuba Literary Alliance (CCLA), founded by Richard and Kimberley Grove back in 2004. -

Your project must have a Canadian theme such as history, geography or heritage whether it is local, national or international. Your teacher will also have certain guidelines which you will need to follow. This booklet has been created to facilitate research for Heritage Fair projects. This guide contains research tips, sources of information, and sample topics. RESEARCH TIPS Getting started Identify a topic. This should be something of interest to you. Be as specific as possible, but be prepared to broaden your topic, especially if it is not truly regional. See Sample Topics. Give yourself plenty of time. Research takes time and sometimes you have to start over if there is not enough information available on your topic. Schedule your time to work on the project especially if working with a partner. Make an outline. Your outline is your strategy. Develop a series of questions relating to the information you need to find. Use these questions to organize and plan your research. It is a good idea to list keywords related to your topic (this will help in catalogue and online searches). Make a list of possible sources of information. Use a variety of sources but try to limit Internet and anecdotal sources. Browse general sources such as encyclopedias and handbooks to gather some background information on your topic. -
