Hopkins The lexical data reported in this Chuj-English dictionary were gathered during my dissertation field work in 1964-65. My first exposure to the Chuj language was in 1962, when I went to Huehuetenango with Norman A. McQuown and Brent Berlin to gather data on the languages of the Cuchumatanes (Berlin et al. 1969). At the time I was a graduate student at the University of Texas, employed as a research assistant on the University of Chicago's Chiapas Study Projects, directed by McQuown (McQuown and Pitt-Rivers 1970). Working through the Maryknoll priests who were then the Catholic clergy in the indigenous areas of Huehuetenango and elsewhere in Guatemala, we recorded material, usually in the form of 100-word Swadesh lists (for glottochronology), from several languages. The sample included two speakers of the Chuj variety of San Mateo Ixtatán (including the man who was later to become my major informant). In the Spring of 1962, as field work for the project wound down, I returned to Austin to finish drafting my Master's thesis, and then went on to Chicago to begin graduate studies in Anthropology at the University of Chicago, with McQuown as my major professor. I continued to work on Chiapas project materials in McQuown's archives, and in 1963 he assigned me the Chuj language as the topic of my upcoming doctoral dissertation.

    I. Editorial I would like to once again survey the readership about the possbility of adding an additional section to each issue of the BHA concerning the existence and content of newlycreated primary archival collections relating to the history of archaeology. I have heard only from a few readers/contributors in this regard. This section would contain contributions from the readership/contributors in regard to primary archival materials recently housed in repositories both public and private. With the current interest by both public and private funding agencies in preserving the anthropological record, it seems advisable that the BHA should address the creation and announce the location of new primary archival collectionsas they are formed. Through this new section in each issue, the BHA would add another usable source of information that its readership could benefit from. I look forward to any and all communications on this idea. WILLIAM WHITE HOWELLS November 27, 1908–December 20, 2005 BY JONATHAN FRIEDLAENDER WITH CONTRIBUTIONS FROM DAVID PILBEAM, DANIEL HRDY, EUGENE GILES, AND ROGER GREEN ILLIAM WHITE HOWELLS, ONE OF the most distinguished WAmerican anthropologists of the second half of the 20th century, and perhaps the most charming and elegant, died in Kittery Point, Maine, on December 20, 2005, at age 97. He brought anthropology to a wide audience through his general books and played a major role in transforming physical anthropology into a population-based biological sci- ence. From this perspective he helped free physical anthro- pology from its earlier preoccupation with typological classifications of human races. His work was marked by so- phistication in multivariate statistics, a great breadth of knowl- edge in all subfields of anthropology, and a lucid and direct literary style that engaged the reader in what ap- peared to be an informal conversation. Bill (to his friends) was born November 27, 1908, in New York City. He came from a family of prominent intel- lectuals. His father, John Mead Howells, was a successful architect, and his paternal grandfather was William Dean Howells, the distinguished 19th-century American novelist and man of letters. A brief anecdote: As a young baby, Bill was taken by his mother to visit his grandfather, who was being visited by his close friend Samuel Clemens.
