INTRODUCTION The Mam Language Peace Corps Contribution Among the notable accomplishments of the Peace Corps must be included the shattering of certain myths about languages. It took the Peace Corps to discover, at least for the American government, that Spanish and Portuguese are not the only important languages of Latin America; that indeed, in many large and heavily populated areas from Mexico down through the Andes and as far south as Paraguay and Chile, aboriginal languages greatly predominate over the language imposed by the Europeans. It took the Peace Corps, with volun- teers working at the grassroots level, to find out that, even in many areas said to be practically bilingual, such as Highland Guatemala, in fact Spanish is rarely spoken, and then only by a small minority, and then often haltingly and with embarrassment. -

The Complete Guide to Tulum: Where to Stay, Eat, and Wander Tulúm is holding true to its origins as a cross roads: between the intensive development to the north and pristine nature to the south. By Jessica Seba, Community Manager, Journey Mexico Tulum, a once “off the beaten path” destination on Mexico’s dazzling Caribbean Coast, is known for its picturesque Mayan archaeological site perched on a cliff overlooking the turquoise blue Mexican-Caribbean sea. Today, as the region has grown into a world-class tourism destination, it is one of the most visited Mayan sites. As increased visitation and development pushes down the coast from Cancun, Tulum has retained its bohemian, wild feel and is home to some of the most spectacular beaches in the world. It has evolved from a cross-roads trading post of the Mayan Civilization to a truck stop village into the type of “travelers place” that reminds us why we travel in the first place! In the beginning Tulum was placed firmly on the backpackers map and had relatively little to no infrastructure for travelers. The intrepid hung their hammocks between the swaying palm trees, pitched their tents, and quietly enjoyed the white sand beaches, crystalline waters, virgin cenotes with a few others and with nesting sea turtles and other abundant wildlife. As the word spread of spectacular, secluded beaches and solitude, Tulum became a haven for nature lovers, yoga practitioners, divers, and those looking to escape the mass tourism that enveloped Cancun and then spread down the Riviera Maya. Today Tulum continues its evolution and now welcomes trendy travelers with a full array of boutique hotels, unique restaurants, and even an organic and tranquil nightlife scene (except for Saturday nights when Papaya Playa pulses and brings in internationally renowned DJs!). -

Collins, B.S., M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2005 Dissertation Examination Committee: Approved by Professor Donald Winford, Advisor Professor Scott Schwenter Advisor Professor Amy Zaharlick Department of Linguistics Copyright by Wesley Miller Collins 2005 ABSTRACT In this dissertation, I look at selected Maya-Mam anthropological and linguistic data and suggest that they provide evidence that there exist overlapping cultural and grammatical themes that are salient to Mam speakers. The data used in this study were gathered largely via ethnographic methods based on participant observation over my twenty-five year relationship with the Mam people of Comitancillo, a town of 60,000 in Guatemala’s Western Highlands. For twelve of those years, my family and I lived among the Mam, participating with them in the cultural milieu of daily life. In order to help shed light on the general relationship between language and culture, I discuss the key Mayan cultural value of centeredness and I show how this value is a pervasive organizing principle in Mayan thought, cosmology, and daily living, a value called upon by the Mam in their daily lives to regulate and explain behavior. Indeed, I suggest that centeredness is a cultural theme, a recurring cultural value which supersedes social differences, and which is defined for cultural groups as a whole (England, 1978). I show how the Mam understanding of issues as disparate as homestead construction, the town central plaza, historical Mayan religious practice, Christian conversion, health concerns, the importance of the numbers two and four, the notions of agreement and forgiveness, child discipline, and moral stance are all instantiations of this basic underlying principle. -

Special theme: Languages and Linguistics at an Ethnological Museum National Museum of Language is a window into the human mind and reflects human activities, Ethnology while linguistics is an academic field where languages are analyzed from a scientific view-point. As an ethnological museum, Minpaku has a strong focus Osaka on fieldwork, which is necessary for linguists and ethnologists to study languages and learn about human beings and their diversity. Essays in this Number 39 issue present glimpses of the thoughts of linguists at Minpaku who combine linguistic fieldwork and later analysis at their desks. What is unique to December 2014 researchers at Minpaku, however, is that we are also involved with exhibitions for the public and have everyday communication with Anthropology Newsletter anthropologists in other fields. Languages do not exist without humans and humans do not exist without language. We believe that linguistic research is a good starting point on the path to a better understanding of who we are. MINPAKU Yak and Pig, Glacier and Sea Noboru Yoshioka National Museum of Ethnology Why do many Japanese-language dictionaries contain the word yaku [jakɯ] ‘yak’? When I was in the field, this question all of a sudden struck me. To make sure that my facts were correct, I checked the desktop dictionaries that I was carrying — a pocket-size dictionary published in 1979, a student dictionary published in 1996, and one Contents published in 2008 — and confirmed that all of these actually contained Languages and Linguistics the word as I had thought. Living in at an Ethnological Museum Japan, it is hard to see real yaks. -

Kroskrity, Committee Chair The thesis observes the role of life experiences with language in the production of new political orientations among diaspora of Mayans from the Highlands of Guatemala. This is accomplished through the analysis of life histories of Mayan interpreters that focus on how experiences of language have directed their life courses and careers. Interpreters’ narratives of these life paths reveal moments of insight in which they transform their identities, political orientations, and methods of advancing their communities.
