31st Avenue

The temporary shoring at this location is now complete. On Saturday, January 6 and Sunday, January 7, during the day crews will be preparing to install the cast-in-drilled-hole piles within the Caltrain right-of-way. Then at night on Monday, January 8 to Friday, January 12, crews will be installing the piles. The installation is done by drilling a borehole into the ground, which is then reinforced. Crews will then pour concrete into the borehole to form the pile

When possible, work will be conducted during the day. However, due to the proximity of some activities relative to the railroad tracks, night work may be required throughout the project. In an effort to start construction earlier in the evening, Caltrain will be single tracking its trains on evenings when night work is scheduled. Please note the construction schedule is subject to change.

Neighbors will hear additional noises from heavy machinery and equipment backup alarms. Caltrain will implement noise mitigation measures for residents directly adjacent to the project site. We apologize for any inconvenience these activities may occur.

Weekday Work From Monday, January 8 to Friday, January 12 crews will:  Install cast-in-drilled-hole piles within the Caltrain right-of-way at Borel Creek and 31st Avenue  Remove wells near  Continue to work on the temporary parking lots at 31st Avenue and at Pacific Blvd. and Delaware  Pothole near 25th Avenue to determine the location of underground utilities

On Monday, January 8 to Thursday, January 11 crews will be excavating at the Pedestrian Underpass and at 28th Avenue. Then on Thursday, January 11 and Friday, January 12, crews will be working on the abutments at the Pedestrian Underpass and conduct pile testing at 28th Avenue.

For riders, single tracking will occur on Tuesday, January 2 to Friday, January 5, starting at 8:00 p.m. until the evening's last train to allow for the night construction activities.

Please note that on Tuesday, January 2, the parking lot on the northwestern end of the Hillsdale Station was permanently closed to construct the elevated trackway and 31st Avenue bridge for the grade separation project. Parking is now available in the new temporary lot opened on the east side of the station which is accessible from E. 28th and E. 31st Avenues at South Delaware Street. To view a map of the temporary parking area, click here. Customers can use the temporary walkway from the parking lot to access the Caltrain platform.

Background Caltrain, in cooperation with the City of San Mateo, will raise the tracks and slightly lower the road (grade separate) at E. 25th Avenue in San Mateo. This will improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians, and it will reduce local traffic congestion in San Mateo. In addition, the project will create new east-west street connections at 28th and 31st Avenues; and as part of the project improvements, Caltrain will build a new elevated Hillsdale Station with updated amenities at E. 28th Avenue.

Construction is expected to be complete in early 2020. In order to maintain regular train service, some activities will be conducted during nights and weekends, outside of normal train service hours. Neighbors may experience construction noise and light during these times. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project The Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project (PCEP) is a key component of the Caltrain Modernization program. The PCEP would electrify the Caltrain Corridor from ’s 4th and King Caltrain Station to approximately the Tamien Caltrain Station.

The primary purpose of the Project is to improve Caltrain system performance, reduce long-term environmental impact by reducing noise, improving regional air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. An electrified Caltrain system would better address Peninsula commuters’ vision of increased service and improved travel times in an environmentally friendly and reliable way. This also is expected to help accommodate increase system ridership through improved system operations.
