The famous Italian soprano Carmen Giannattasio reprises the demanding title role, having recently portrayed Norma at the Bayerisches Staatsorchester in Munich. Thirty-one years after her first, iconic concert at the Odeon in 1988, Karaindrou will deliver a spellbinding concert in two parts. In the first part, audiences will enjoy Karaindrou’s latest works from the ECM New Series album Tous des oiseaux, which has met with international success. The album, featuring a cover by the acclaimed artist Christos Bokoros, includes two pieces, the music for the performance Tous des oiseaux, written and directed by Wajdi Mouawad, 7 artistic director of the Théâtre national de la Colline in Paris, and the music for the Iranian filmmaker Payman Maadi’s film Bomb, A Love Story, which was nominated at the 12th Asia Pacific Screen Awards. The second part will feature some of Karaindrou’s most memorable works from her collaborations with Theodoros Angelopoulos, Tonia Marketaki, Margarethe von Trotta, Christoforos Christofis, Jules Dassin and Antonis Antypas. Despite the challenges we and the industry are facing, we are optimistic about 2021. This is because we love cinema and good films and series – and particularly in these difficult times, they are also some thing that is needed by audiences around the world. Time and again in recent years, German feature films and series have succeeded in captivating viewers abroad, and we are confident that this will be the case in 2021 as well. In particular, the new wave of German documentaries is establishing itself increasingly as a favourite with international audiences. We are just as proud of the German Films campaign FACE TO FACE, which has been in existence for six years now, and delighted that we will be able to continue it with a great new pool of talent in 2021 – despite the difficult current conditions. Films and series are created through the work of a large team, which is why we have decided to highlight a greater diversity of film professions in 2021 and are proudly presenting the premiere of our new faces in this issue of GFQ. German Films Quarterly will broaden its format in 2021: We will also open our publication to contri butions dealing with internationally controversial topics in the film industry.

  • Wonder, Space, and Place in Pausanias' Periegesis
Axion Theas: Wonder, Space, and Place in Pausanias’ Periegesis Hellados by Jody Ellyn Cundy A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Classics University of Toronto © Copyright by Jody Ellyn Cundy 2016 Axion Theas: Wonder, Space, and Place in Pausanias’ Periegesis Hellados Jody Ellyn Cundy Doctor of Philosophy Department of Classics University of Toronto 2016 Abstract The Periegesis Hellados presents a description of the sites and sights of Roman Greece in ten carefully constructed books. These books present the fruits of author’s extensive travels and careful textual research over the course of several decades (between the 130’s and ca. AD 175-80) and compiled into a unified composite itinerary. There is no doubt that Pausanias travels through an “already written landscape,” and his travel experience is necessarily informed by and sometimes clearly motivated by his literary encounters. This project investigates Pausanias’ engagement with literary antecedents, with a particular focus on the antiquarian impulse to excerpt and compile anecdotes in thematic catalogues, which broadly resemble wonder-texts (paradoxographies). The organizing principle of these thematic catalogues contrasts with the topographical (spatial) structure of the frame narrative of the Periegesis. In part, this study aims to resolve the perceived tension between the travel account and the antiquarian mode in Pausanias’ project in order to show that they serve complementary rather than competing ends. Resolution of these competing paradigms allows in turn for a more coherent understanding of the Periegesis as unified subject. This study argues that wonder (thauma) is a unifying theme ii of Periegesis Hellados.

  • Defining Interdisciplinarity and Indentifying Research Directions in Jani Christou’S Strychnine Lady
DOI: 10.15503/jecs20141-226-241 Expression Defining interdisciplinarity and indentifying Research directions in Jani Christou’s Strychnine lady Maria Yerosimou, PhD Faculty of Music Goldsmiths University of London, Lewisham Way, New Cross, London, UK E mail address: [email protected] Abstract Jani Christou was a major Greek composer, whose unusual, yet promising career was brought to an end after his untimely death in 1970 at the age of 44. His challenging and speculative output has intrigued generation of young music scholars; however, J. Christo- u’s work remains imperfectly and only patchily known and understood, especially outside Greece. This is partly because of the interdisciplinary nature of his late works which redu- ces the possibility of potential researchers who will academically establish J. Christou’s distinguished output. The aim of the present paper is to present and analyse parts of Strych- nine Lady, a work composed in 1967 in order to propose research directions in an effort to conÞ rm J. Christou’s posthumous reputation. Key words: Experimental music theatre, avant garde music, contemporary music, 20th century music, Greek avant garde composer Introduction On the 8th January 1970 an unusual and thrilling talent was lost in a car acci- dent: the composer Jani Christou. J. Christou was a major composer and philo- sopher, whose unusual, yet promising career was brought to an end after his untimely death at the age of 44. In his late works particularly J. Christou brought into conjunction his deep immersion in philosophical and psychological studies, including the ideas of Carl Jung and alchemy, with avant-garde musical and dra- matic materials and means.

DIMITRIS PAKSOGLOU – Tenor Born in Greece. Dimitris Paksoglou first embarked on a career as an actor and studied at the National Superior School of Drama. As an actor he went on to appear in important Greek theatres, including the ancient theatre of Epidaurus, the Greek National Theatre and the Athens Megaron. He then decided to make a career change and studied singing at the Athens National Conservatory under the guidance of the famous baritone Kostas Paskalis and Marina Krilovici, graduating with distinction. He moved to France where he appeared with several opera companies and his success lead Greek National Opera to offer him a contract as a principal tenor. He continues to appear in leading roles with the company, which he combines with guest appearances abroad. Greek Dimitris Paksoglou does not sing Cavaradossi with the usual slightly emotional Mediterranean glow. His tenor is more powerfully virile, but also with beautiful splashes of tenderness. He makes his famous song for life with considerable intensity. AFTONBLADET – Lennart Bromander - Monday 10th February 2020 Dimitris Paksoglou who sang Cavaradossi is a real Italian tenor (although he is Greek) with plenty of power and clear tone up to the highest register. Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus Program 21 and 22 June 2019 Oedipus The iconic story of Oedipus comes alive in Robert Wilson’s series of breathtaking, distinctive tableau vivant. The celebrated director follows Oedipus’ story chronologically, without faithfully adapting Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, from the moment of Oedipus’ birth and his abandonment as an infant to the moment of his self-inflicted blinding, following the horrific revelations: from the first light of birth to the last light he sees before it all goes black.
