Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is with tremendous pride and enthusiasm I welcome you to Pomona Catholic’s 120th year of tradition and academic excellence. First, we thank God for his abundant blessings on our community. I extend my sincere gratitude for your partnership as we work together to accomplish a balanced academic and spiritual community for grades six through twelve.

Pomona Catholic is introducing iPads into the classroom starting the 2018-2019 school year. In conjunction with introduction of the iPad program, we hope to also start a comprehensive professional development program. More information will be provided soon. Our Middle School will launch a Spanish Lab for the 6th and 7th grade students.

This is a generous community that truly lives the Gospel and nurtures the next generation of service minded individuals. We look forward to discovering many new ways to partner with other community groups. We especially want to further nurture our relationship with Damien High School, our neighboring schools, parishes of St. Madeleine and St. Joseph, the City of Pomona and other local parishes and organizations.

Our website is the best source for up-to-date changes occurring in the calendar.

Celebrating, growing, and preparing our students to live a full and blessed life are our primary goals at Pomona Catholic. God bless you and our community as we journey forward on the path God has set before us. Please do not hesitate to contact me. I am honored to lead us forward into a new year filled with God’s many graces. Pray for me, partner with me in support of a positive and productive school year.

A Brief History of Catholic Education in the Pomona Valley

In 1886, a little frame church was erected on the corner what is now Park Avenue and Monterey Street. Rev. P. J. Fisher arrived to serve as resident pastor. Father Fisher considered seriously the plan for a Catholic school. He conducted a survey of the possible number of pupils available for such a school. This survey showed that thirty-seven Catholic children from Pomona were attending boarding schools in other cities.

Academy of the Holy Names -- 1898 to 1948 Thursday, September 15, 1898, marked the opening of the Academy of the Holy Names for the enrollment of pupils. The teaching staff consisted of six Sisters from the Mother House in Oakland, who had arrived to assume charge of the school. The curriculum included all grades from first to tenth, inclusive, consisting of primary, grammar, and academic grades. A devastating fire destroyed much of the original building in 1927. The sisters moved the students and teachers to the Elks Club until the current building was erected in 1928. (Excerpted from A Half Century History of the Academy of the Holy Names 1898 to 1948 by Mrs. M. C. Kennedy.)

The Academy was a boarding school for girls, conducted by the Sisters of the Holy Names. During World War II the sisters realized that they did not have enough sisters to staff all five of their schools. The last graduating class from the high school was 1943. The new pastor at that time, Rev. Thomas English, recognized the need for a Catholic high school for girls and boys in the Pomona area. The sisters told him that they did not have the personnel to open such a school. In fact, they were regretfully leaving Pomona.

Fr. English asked to purchase the property for use as a high school. He asked the Felician Sisters to come from Chicago and staff both the Academy as well as the grade school.

Saint Joseph High School--1948 to 1952 In order to relieve overcrowding at St. Joseph Elementary, the former academy was used by the junior high students for the first two years. As the academy building was converted from a dormitories to classrooms, a grade per year was added until the full complement of classes were established. In 1953, St. Joseph High School became Pomona Catholic High School.

Celebrating 120 Years

Pomona Catholic High School -- Pomona Catholic Girls High School With the post war boom in California, Pomona Catholic’s building soon became too small. By 1957, the enrollment reached 750 students. When the old building became available in 1959, the archdiocese bought the property and opened Pomona Catholic Boys High School of LaVerne (now Damien High School). Year by year the boys left Pomona Catholic until the last co-ed class graduated in 1962. The 1962-1963 school year saw a new era and another name change—Pomona Catholic Girls High School.

Pomona Catholic Middle School Pomona Catholic again became co-ed in 2009 when the Pomona Catholic Middle School was opened. In the Spring of 2018, Pomona Catholic was named the middle school for the Pomona family of Catholic schools, which includes St. Joseph and St. Madeleine Schools. Today, Pomona Catholic is led by alumna Rebecca Arteaga. ’92

Saint Joseph Elementary-- 1898 to present St. Joseph School was opened in 1898 by the Sisters of the Holy Names at the behest of Rev. P. J. Fisher, Pastor of St. Joseph. Fifty years later, the Felician Sisters came to staff St. Joseph, living with the high school sisters until a convent was built for them. The original school was on Hamilton and William. It was later moved and expanded on Lewis and Holt. St. Joseph alumna Sister Catalina Marie Batres was the last Felician Sister teaching at St. Joseph. Today St. Joseph teaches TK4 through fifth grade in a dual language program.

Sacred Heart School -- 1949 to 1998 Sacred Heart School was opened in 1949 to serve the southern parts of Pomona and also Chino. During the renovation of the former academy, some junior high students from St. Joseph were sent to Sacred Heart School while others were sent to the high school for classes. Sacred Heart School continued to serve until it closed its doors in 1998. Sacred Heart alumni still keep in contact with each other.

Saint Madeleine School -- 1964 to present Serving the eastern edge of Pomona, Saint Madeline School opened its doors in 1964, only one year after the parish was established. The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Orange staffed the school until 1975. Today St. Madeleine teaches TK3 to fifth grade and is lead by a Pomona Catholic alumna, Ms. Maria Jimenez. ’78

POMONA CATHOLIC DAY OF SERVICE

Pomona Catholic's Interact Club sponsored a day of service on Friday, February 16. Students in each grade were assigned a specific project or site to be of service. Students brought two lunches that day--one for themselves and one to send to the homeless shelter at the Armory.

Sixth graders made fleece blankets for Barbara's Blanket Project. These were given to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Holy Name of Mary Parish.

Grades seven and eight worked at the farm at Fairplex (Los Angeles County Fairgrounds). Some students seeded, weeded, and transplanted the gardens while others stacked bales of hay.

Freshmen went to the former convent at St. Joseph Parish where they had a choice of three projects: pack goody bags for the homeless with members of the Young Ladies Institute (YLI), sort religious items for Angela Spirituality Center, or tutor at St. Joseph Elementary School.

After lunch, the girls went before the Blessed Sacrament at the church to pray for the families and victims of the school shooting in Parkland, FL.

The sophomores made care packages and wrote letters of support for Project Sister Family Services. The Mission of Project Sister (an acronym for Sisters in Service To End Rape) is to reduce the trauma and risk of sexual assault and child abuse in Eastern Los Angeles and Western San Bernardino Counties.

Sister Julianna said, "These wonderful students did so much good for so many people in one day!"

Celebrating 120 Years Career day—February 23, 2018 Students were exposed to many professional careers. Presenters provided students with first-hand knowledge of potential career paths. We had over 20 guest speakers sharing their experience in the fields of public service, medicine, government, athletics and more! We even had a professional athlete!

Dennis Powell, Former pitcher for the Dr. Bill Delo, Family Medicine MD

Thank you to all of these lovely speakers who came to share their time and experiences with our students!

Pomona Catholic Walks for Peace Peace prayer and “Marching for our lives”

The Future Voters Club at Pomona (CA) Catholic High School organized a prayerful walk at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 13, around the school in memory of the 17 people killed in Parkland, FL.

Orange bows were tied to the school fence, one for each student and faculty member killed in Florida, and another one to honor the memory of Pomona Police Officer Greggory Casillas who was killed in the line of duty on March 9. (See https://www.odmp.org/officer/23615-police-officer-greggory-casillas)

The students prayed the Hail Mary as they walked around the school three times carrying posters. They ended their walk near the flagpole where the Stars and Stripes flew at half-staff for Officer Casillas.

Honoring a fallen officer Pomona Lays Slain Cop to Rest

The funeral for fallen Pomona Police Officer Greggory Casillas on Thursday, March 22. Casillas, 30, was shot and killed when a suspect fired on him through a door March 9.

The funeral service was held at Purpose Church. The large building was filled with law enforcement officers from all over the country. Even the large tent for the overflow crowd was standing room only.

After the church service, the body was taken to the police station for the poignant "last call" of Officer Casillas's badge number.

Next, the procession headed to Forest Lawn Cemetery, passing Pomona Catholic High School on the way. Principal Torres invited the students, faculty, and staff to line the sidewalk holding American flags and posters of support. Despite the steady rain, everyone stood respectfully for the 40-minute procession. Sister Julianna said, "Some of the officers rolled down their windows to thank us for our tribute."

Mr. Torres and students delivered a floral "Thin blue line" tribute to the Pomona Police Station.

Celebrating 120 Years INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS’ ARTICLES

International Students Celebrate Birthdays

Being far from home is especially hard on your birthday. But international middle school and high school students at Pomona Catholic did not have to feel alone this year. Every two months all the international students who had birthdays in those 2 months were treated to an international student birthday party. Sodas, ice cream, candy, and brownies were set out for everyone. But the “Birthday Girls” got crowns with their names, a big chocolate muffin with a super big candle, and a rousing version of “Happy Birthday.”

PC International Students Visit Colleges

Pomona Catholic students visited four different colleges this year to help them with their college choices. In September students visited UC Riverside. Then an information session gave them advice about applying to UCR, as well a majors and financial aid. Stories about the history of the campus, explaining the most popular majors, and describing student activities were also shared.

October - Mount San Antonio College. Students felt the trip helped them understand the community college process not only for Mt. SAC but for community colleges in general.

(Right) December - Cal Poly Pomona. Then the students hiked up to the top of the hill for a tour of the Collins School of Hospitality where they were impressed with the equipment in the professional kitchens.

(Left) March - UC Irvine. A PC graduate from class of 2017, Alina Wang, met the group for lunch and answered questions about student life at UCI. Then a student guide took the students around the campus to point out important buildings, explain the student housing arrangement, and share impressions of life at UCI.

Report from the Finance Office 2017-2018

We are pleased to share our annual report and grateful to all who have supported Pomona Catholic.

Pomona Catholic faced some financial challenges this past school year of 2017-18. A drop in international enrollment of approximately 20 students hit us hard. We have been working diligently with our staff and teachers as well as the Archdiocese to get us back on track financially. We were not alone in facing the drop in international student enrollment. Other schools and universities have also had to respond to this situation.

The good news was that we were able to offset the decline in international enrollment with an increase in our domestic student enrollment. Total enrollment increased with 225 students enrolled for the high school and 98 for the middle school for a total of 323. This was an increase of 5 students over school year 2016-17.

Through the generosity of families, alumni, foundations and other friends of Pomona Catholic, we are able to continue our work towards achieving our mission of inclusion of those families that need tuition assistance. In school year 2017-18 we provided over $800,000 in assistance to families in need.

Our endowment fund, the Pete and Maria Borba fund, continues to provide 9 students with tuition assistance. Also, earnings from the Carrie Marangio Piscioneri (Class of 1978) fund will be matched by two of our families to provide tuition assistance.

Additional tuition assistance was provided by the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF), the Doheny Foundation, the Bill Hannon Foundation, the Mayr Foundation, San Manuel Foundation, the Elias family and the Rose Hills Foundation. The Adopt a Student program funded by parents, alumni and friends of the school, provided over $12,000 to student families that suffered severe financial hardship during the year.

Our fundraiser activities this past year included the Fall Raffle, the Spring Walkathon, Casino Night, the Scrip Program, and the Car Show. Also, we hold an International Winter camp in January and an International Summer camp in July that provide needed funds. These and other fundraisers continue to provide the crucial assistance needed to meet our educational and operational needs. Our thanks go out to all of our parents and volunteers who work tirelessly to make these a success.

This year as happens each year, we were the recipients of the generosity of the Daniel Murphy Foundation. During the summer, the expert tradesmen come to Pomona Catholic to work on the list of repair and maintenance items identified in order to keep our venerable 90 year building in tip top shape.

17TH ANNUAL CAR SHOW & CRAFT FAIR MAY 6, 2018

This year’s car show was a huge success! We had so many alumni bring out their gorgeous classic car on a beautiful Sunday afternoon for all of Pomona to enjoy. We were able to raise approximately $14,000 towards our athletic programs!

Thank you to all who came out to support our annual Car Show!

WAYS TO GIVE

Pomona Catholic relies on the generosity of others to continue to provide excellence in Catholic education. PC offers many opportunities for donors to make tax-deductible gifts in support of the programs, campaigns, and future needs of the school. To learn more about ways to support Pomona Catholic, call the Development Office at 909.623.5297 x13, email [email protected] or visit www.pomonacatholic.org.

GIFTS OF CASH Most donors find that a personal check is the easiest and most efficient way to make a gift. Checks should be made payable to Pomona Catholic.

CREDIT CARDS Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express are accepted for gifts. Donors can call the Development Office or donate through our secure, online portal by visiting www.pomonacatholic.org and clicking the "Donate" button at the bottom of the Giving page.

IN-KIND GIFTS We welcome donations of items in good condition such as technology equipment, furniture, and other school-related items. By law, Pomona Catholic cannot provide the donor with the dollar value of an in-kind gift. Such valuations, when applicable, need to be professionally assessed and certified. This is the responsibility of the donor.

MATCHING GIFTS Many businesses and corporations match gifts of their employees, spouses, and retired employees. Your company's personnel office (or Human Resources office) will be happy to provide you with information about its matching gift program.

MEMORIAL & HONORARY GIFTS Your memorial gift can help perpetuate the values that guided a loved one's life. Gifts may honor a person during his or her lifetime or commemorate a special event.

APPRECIATED STOCKS Gifts of appreciated stocks or mutual fund shares provide an immediate benefit to Pomona Catholic and donors receive an income tax deduction equal to the fair market value of the securities. All gifts of stock donated to PC are done so through the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. For more information, call the Development Office at 909.623.5297 x13.

TUITION ASSISTANCE One in four students at Pomona Catholic depend on tuition assistance to attend. We have increased our tuition assistance program with the hope of allowing every student who wants to attend our school with the opportunity to become a Pacer. In 2016-17, we awarded more than $800,000 in tuition assistance. For a complete list of scholarships, visit www.pomonacatholic.org. If you would like to establish a scholarship "in honor of" or "in memory of" a loved one, contact the Development Office at 909.623.5297 x13.

All Gifts to Pomona Catholic are tax-deductible. PC is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization.
