What is the purpose of the Award?

The Scholastic Achievement Award is intended to honor outstanding scholastic achievement by members of the graduating classes of the public schools in the Ulster County supervisory district of Ulster BOCES.

How are students selected to receive the Award?

Student representatives are chosen on the basis of scholarship. The class valedictorian, salutatorian, and one outstanding student selected by the High School Principal are honored.

How is this Award Sponsored?

The Scholastic Achievement Award program is sponsored and organized by the Ulster County Superintendents’ Council.

Ellenville High School

Jasmine Shiffer (Valedictorian) ~ Jasmine will attend Hunter College to study Film, with the hopes of becoming a Filmmaker.

She is a member of the National Honor Society (President), EHS Chapter Singers, Chamber Singer and Actor, and Shadowland Acting Academy.

Her achievements include being named the Valedictorian for the Class of 2020, National Merit Scholarship Finalist, receiving an “A” in all eight college courses she completed, being a columnist in The Shawangunk Journal, and attended two Area All State Choir Festivals.

She volunteered as the Assistant Director for EHS Drama Club and worked on eight musical productions putting in hundreds of hours in total.

Jasmine’s biggest accomplishment is “Starting an independent school newspaper called the Devil’s Advocate with its own APP and then watching the readership grow to include a large part of the school community!”

Quinn Avery (Salutatorian) ~ Quinn will be attending SUNY Ulster to begin her studies in Early Childhood Education. She aspires to become an English Teacher.

Her memberships include Class of 2020 (President 9-12), Jazz Band (9-11), Symphonic Band (President 11-12) Women's Choir (9-12), Chamber Singers (9-12), Quiz Bowl (9), Newspaper (9-10), S.A.D.D (9-12) Student Council (9-10), Key Club (9-12), Yearbook (President 11-12), National Honor Society (Historian 12), T.O.W.S.C (9-12), Varsity Cross Country Team (9), Varsity Soccer Team (Captain 10-12 ), Varsity Indoor Track Team (9-10), Varsity Basketball Team (11-12), and Varsity Softball Team (11-12).

Her achievements include Student of the Month (June and December 2017), All County Band (9), All County Choir (9-11), and Scholar Athlete Award.

She has volunteered her time as an AYSO League referee, with the Veterans Campaign, Ellenville School Musical Stage Crew, and as a Blood Drive Volunteer.

Quinn’s biggest accomplishment is “Being Salutatorian!”

Alayna Stickles (Principal’s Award) ~ Alayna plans to attend SUNY Albany to study Human Biology. She hopes to become a certified Forensic Pathologist.

She is a member of the Chemistry Club, Varsity Tennis Team, National Honor Society, and The Devil’s Advocate Newspaper.

Her achievements include High Honor Roll (9-12), earned “Exceeded” on New Paltz English portfolio, and the Mid-Hudson Athletic League Scholar Athlete Award.

She volunteered her time at the Ellenville Nursery School, reading to and assisting the elderly, and also as a peer tutor.

Alayna’s biggest accomplishment is “Going through my school career with my twin brother and helping him surpass the various barriers his learning disability has caused over the progression of the years!”

Highland High School

Ishani Bansal (Valedictorian) ~ Ishani is heading to Stony Brook University, (WISE Honors Program) to begin her studies in Biomedical Engineering with a Pre-Med track. She aspires to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering in the WISE Honors Program and then continue on to medical school to become a physician.

She is a member of National Honor Society (President), Model United Nations (President), French Honor Society (Treasurer), Tri-M Music Honor Society, Concert Band, and the Varsity Tennis team.

Her achievements include Valedictorian, AP Scholar with Distinction, National Merit Finalist, NYS Regents Scholarship for Highest Regents Average, IBM Thomas J. Watson Merit Scholarship, Intern at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals in the Genetics Center, Shadowed at St. Peter's Hospital and Northern Medical Group, and Regeneron STS Science Competitor.

She has volunteered her time at the local temple, as a tutor, and at the senior living home.

Ishani’s biggest accomplishment is “Being Valedictorian!”

Minh Tran (Salutatorian) ~ Minh will be attending The College of enrolled in a seven year BS/MD program and has already been accepted into Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. He will begin his studies majoring in Biology and a Minor in Music. He hopes to be either a radiologist or an oncologist.

He is a member of the National Honor Society (Co-President), Tri-M Music Honor Society (President), Model UN (Treasurer), Science Olympiad, French Club, Mathletes, Interact Club, College-Youth Symphony at SUNY New Paltz, Hudson Valley Youth Jazz Orchestra, National Member of the American College of Musicians, and Varsity Tennis Team (Captain).

His achievements include National Merit Finalist, RPI Gold Medal, AP Scholar with Distinction, Mid-Hudson and NYS Science Olympiad (Regional and State Medalist), NYSSMA All-State Instrumental Jazz Ensemble (2019-Top NYS Trumpet ), NYSSMA All-State Symphony Orchestra (2019), numerous NYSSMA and All-County Events (2017-2020), and conducted cancer research at the University of Maryland Medical Institute during the summer of 2019.

He has volunteered his time at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Montefiore St. Luke’s Hospital, Highland Public Library, Peer Tutor, and through the Interact Club which does volunteer work in the local community.

Minh’s biggest accomplishment is “Being named the top high school jazz trumpet player in New York State and being accepted into four combined BS/MD programs!”

Isabella Fiorese (Principal’s Award) ~ Isabella will be attending SUNY School of Environmental Science and Forestry in the Fall of 2020. Her future plans include pursuing either environmental scientific research, environmental policy, or environmental law.

She is a member of the Model UN (Vice President), National Honor Society, French Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Art Club (President), Interact Club, French Club, Fed Challenge Team, Environmental Club (President), and Varsity Swim Team.

Her achievements include being a student member on the Highland Board of Education and NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete (10-12).

She volunteers at food pantries and church events.

Isabella’s biggest accomplishment is “Being part of numerous festivals including, NYSSMA, All-County, NYSBDA, and Area All-State!”

Kingston High School

Stephen Dong (Valedictorian) ~ Stephen is on his way to to begin his studies in Computer Science. He aspires to be instrumental in helping to run a tech firm that would create value.

He is a member of the Robotics Team, Science Olympiads Team (President), Math Team (President), National Honor Society (President), Computer Science Club (President), Class of 2020 Committee (Treasurer), and Key Club (Secretary).

Stephen’s achievements include Varsity Crew, National Merit Scholarship Finalist, NHS Scholarship Recipient, National Finalist for the US National Chemistry Olympiad, Rensselaer Medal, Medals in Science Olympiads, NYSML Math League DUSO A Team Participant, National Poetry Quarterly Topical Winner, AP Scholar With Distinction, and Ulster County Certificate of Recognition for Volunteerism.

He has volunteered his time with Tech Team, UlsterCorps, created a remote tutoring program for disadvantaged students, and as a YMCA summer volunteer.

Stephen’s biggest accomplishment is “Being able to tell my parents that I became the Valedictorian of Kingston High School!”

Muhammad Kashan Mahmood (Salutatorian) ~ Muhammad will attend Dartmouth College in the Fall to begin his studies in Computer Science and Economics. He aspires to be a Software Developer or Investment Bank Analyst.

He is a member of the Math Team (Vice President), Class of 2020 (Recording Secretary), Computer Science Club (Treasurer), Student Government, National Honor Society, Science Olympiads, Spanish Honor Society, Varsity Lacrosse Team, and Varsity Cross Country Team.

His achievements include QuestBridge Finalist and Scholar 2019, AP Scholar with Distinction, Honor Roll throughout High School, and learning English and adjusting to life in America.

He has volunteered his time with Esopus Forward and Play for Your Freedom.

Muhammad’s biggest accomplishment is “Getting accepted to Dartmouth College!”

Grace Tremper (Principal’s Award) ~ Grace plans to attend SUNY Ulster to being her studies in Biology. She aspires to become a medical professional.

She is a member of the Student Government, Class of 2020 Club, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and Key Club.

Her achievements include Section IX Titles in Volleyball and Softball, Regional Title in Volleyball, Division Titles in Volleyball and Softball, Daily Freeman Softball 2nd Team, Scholar Athlete (every season), Highest Honor Roll every quarter of high school, 100.8844 GPA, and class rank of 3 out of 469.

She has volunteered through the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and Key Club.

Grace’s biggest accomplishment is “Being the 2020 Female Scholar Athlete at Kingston High School!” New Paltz High School

Wells Willett (Valedictorian) ~ Dartmouth College is where Wells will begin his studies in Environmental Engineering. His future plans include becoming an Environmental Engineer.

His achievements include Section IX Nordic Ski Champion, National Merit Scholar Finalist, Varity Cross Country (Captain) and Nordic Ski (Captain).

Wells has volunteered his time at the Mountain Laurel Waldorf School with Science projects and as a peer tutor.

Wells’ biggest accomplishment is “Being named the Valedictorian!”

Philip Ryan Kelso (Salutatorian) ~ Philip will head off to Northeastern University in the Fall of 2020 to study Mathematics and Computer Science. He aspires to become a Mathematician.

He is a member of the National Honor Society and Varsity Cross Country Team.

His achievements include National Merit Finalist, qualified for NYSML in Mathletes, and scored 100 on Piano and Vocal at NYSSMA.

He has volunteered his time at Elting Memorial Library and at various other organizations around New Paltz.

Philip’s biggest accomplishment is “Self-improvement!”

Emily Wong-Pan (Principal’s Award) ~ Emily plans on attending Bryn Mawr College in the Fall of 2020 to study Anthropology. She is undecided at this moment, but is considering a career in the Social Sciences in the future.

She is a member of the National Honor Society, Stage Crew for the Drama Club, Varsity Tennis Team (Captain), and the Yearbook Club.

Her achievements include Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award, Seal of Bi-literacy for Spanish, Sportsmanship Award for Girl’s Varsity Tennis, All-County Band (two years), and French Horn Section Leader (2019-2020).

She has volunteered with the Gardiner Open Space Commission and the League of Women Voters.

Emily’s biggest accomplishment is “Earning the High School Diploma for Piano from the National Guild of Piano Teachers!” Onteora High School

Emily Salem (Valedictorian) ~ Emily will attend Harvard College in the Fall of 2020 to study Government and Social Studies. In the future she hopes to work in the field of Education Policy.

She is a member of Harvard Model Congress, Science Olympiad, National Honor Society (President), Senior Class President, and the Association of Student Governments (President).

Her achievements include playing soccer throughout her time at Onteora (Co-Captain Senior Year), National Merit Commended Student, and Rensselaer Medalist.

She has volunteered her time with the Woodstock Land Conservancy.

Emily’s biggest accomplishment is “The work I have done with Student Government. Last year I authored new bylaws and this year as president it has been rewarding to lead and be a part of an active and energetic group of student representatives!”

Ellery Loheide (Salutatorian) ~ The University of Southern is where Ellery will begin her studies in Sociology. She aspires to do non-profit work, possibly journalism or communications related.

She is a member of the Harvard Model Congress, National Honor Society (Secretary), Hudson Valley Foundation for Youth Health (Board Member), and Yearbook Club (President and Editor ).

Her achievements include Varsity Girls Tennis (Captain), Scholar Athlete, AP Scholar with Distinction, and Salutatorian.

She has volunteered her time through the Hudson Valley Foundation for Youth Health including the organization of a non- profit community meetup for students and local nonprofits in her area, planning trips abroad working with children in local communities in Nepal (2017) and Rwanda (2018), First Steps Preschool (9-10), and the OCS Blood Drive.

Ellery’s biggest accomplishment is “Always putting myself outside of my comfort zone!”

Jacob Stern (Principal’s Award) ~ Jacob is on his way to Penn State University to study Business. He would like to become a successful businessman in a major company.

He is a member of the National Honor Society.

Jacob’s achievements include Varsity Soccer (Captain), Varsity Basketball (Captain) MHAL All-Star Basketball, MHAL Player of the Year, and Section IX All Star (twice).

He has volunteered his time planning a Blood Drive through the National Honor Society and helped organize a Food Drive at the Woodstock Jewish Congregation.

Jacob’s biggest accomplishment is “Scoring 1,142 points in Varsity Basketball and becoming the second highest scorer in Onteora’s boy’s basketball history!” Rondout Valley High School

Grace Barnum (Valedictorian) ~ SUNY Geneseo is where Grace will begin her studies in Sociomedical Sciences with a minor in Mathematics. She aspires to work in the Public Health and Epidemiology field.

She is a member of the National Honor Society, Mock Trial, Science Olympiad, and Student Congress.

Her achievements include Valedictorian of the Class of 2020, Class of 2020 (Secretary), and 1st Place (General Biology category) for her Science Research project at the sub-regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium.

She has volunteered her time at the Stone Ridge Library Fair, the Rosendale Library, at multiple craft clubs and fairs, and the Stone Ridge Food Pantry.

Grace’s biggest accomplishment is “Winning 1st place in the category of General Biology at the Sub Regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium for my science research project on Essential Oil Tick Repellents!”

Lara Goldstein (Salutatorian) ~ Lara plans on attending SUNY Binghamton to begin her studies in Biology. She aspires to enter the medical field or work in scientific research.

Lara is a member of the Executive Council for National Honors Society and the Varsity Volleyball Team.

Her achievements include being Salutatorian, conducted research in a lab at University of Albany, wrote a research plan and paper as well as created presentations, and presented her work at several science competitions including International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).

She has volunteered her time through the National Honor Society and the Community Service Club.

Lara’s biggest accomplishments is “My science research project which I conducted most of the research on my own and learned a lot from it!”

Isaiah Jones (Principal’s Award) ~ Isaiah plans on attending SUNY Sullivan to begin his studies in Sports/Fitness. He aspires to become an Athletic Trainer.

He is a member of FFA, Student Congress, Graduation Committee, Prom Committee, WISE Program, Peer Leader, Varsity Football Team (Captain), and Varsity Indoor and Outdoor Track Team.

His achievements include receiving the Blood Drive Plaque, Prom King, and Homecoming King.

He volunteers his time with the Cottekill Fire Company.

Isaiah’s biggest accomplishments is “Putting a worm on a hook and overcoming my biggest fear!”

Saugerties High School

Nicole Peters (Valedictorian) ~ Nicole will be attending Northeastern University to study Computer Science. She hopes to become a Computer Programmer in the future.

She is a member of Student Government (Treasurer 11-12), Student Council, Varsity Track & Field Team, and Varsity Tennis Team.

Her achievements include Valedictorian, National Honor Society, Scholar Athlete, National Merit Scholar, and RIT Computing Medal.

She has volunteered her time working at the Food Pantry and through tutoring.

Nicole’s biggest accomplishment is “Winning a National Merit Scholarship!”

Mark Danza (Salutatorian) ~ Mark will be attending Rochester Institute of Technology to begin his studies in Computer Engineering. He aspires to become a Computer or Software Engineer.

He is a member of the Saugerties Technology Department (President), Saugerties High School Band (President), Varsity Soccer Team, SUNY Ulster Percussion Ensemble, and National Honor Society.

His achievements include Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Medalist Scholarship Award, participation in VEX Robotics and Seaperch Underwater Robotics Competitions (Team Captain), and Seaperch Underwater Robotics Competition Engineering Notebook Award.

He has volunteered with Key Club (9-11), STEM-related events for local students, including a technology summer camp, programming at the Saugerties Public Library, numerous elementary school activities, and a community ser- vice effort of printing 3D plastic face shields from his home using printers from Saugerties High School. These face shields are being donated to Kingston’s HealthAlliance hospitals (where his father works) as supplemental personal protective equipment (PPE) to aid in the response to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

Mark’s biggest accomplishment is “Sharing my passion for STEM with the younger students who take an interest within my community!”

Carter Vail (Principal’s Award) ~ Carter will be attending Rochester Institute of Technology to begin his studies in Software Engineering. He aspires to be a Software Engineer and Game Designer in the future.

He is a member of KSUA (Kingston Softball Umpires Association).

His achievements include Varsity Tennis Team (Captain), MHAL Academic Athlete Awards, Top Four in MHAL Tennis Tournament (2019), and being ranked 3rd in the Class of 2020.

He has volunteered his time through the Key Club.

Carter’s biggest accomplishment is “Founding the Robotics Club at Saugerties High School!” Wallkill High School

Conor Bready (Valedictorian) ~ Conor will begin his studies in Chemistry and Applied Mathematics at Furman University in the Fall of 2020. While he is not exactly sure what his future plans are he knows he would love to do research in the area of battery life and solar panels.

He is a member of the National Honor Society (President), Spanish National Honor Society, works at Cherry Top Dairy Bar, and is a coach at Mr. Todd's Gymnastics.

His achievements include Valedictorian, multiple Academic Excellence Awards, JV Soccer Team (Captain Grade 10), Indoor Track MHAL Champions (2018), Coach's Award for Indoor Track (Grade 12), President of NHS, CDEP Student Representa- tive, and Head Coach for the boy’s pre-team program at Mr. Todd's Gymnastics.

He has volunteered his time through NHS, as a student representative for CDEP, as a tutor, with the Vision of Wallkill group, and at the Nirvana 360 Soccer Summer Camp.

Conor’s biggest accomplishment is “Sticking with gymnastics as a coach after I hurt my wrist and could no longer participate as a student!”

Andrew Conklin (Salutatorian) ~ Andrew will attend the University of at Amherst where he will study Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. His goal is to work in a field where he is helping individuals with lost limbs and nerve damage through regenerative cell research.

His memberships include the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society.

His achievements include receiving multiple Academic Excellence Awards (9-12), Coach's Award for JV Baseball, and JV Baseball Team Captain. Andrew had a tragic loss of a family member at the beginning of his senior year but he turned his loss into motivation and drive to stay focused and be positive to try to make a difference in someone else's life.

He volunteered his time at the Wallkill Area Little League Field (9-12) and packed and delivered backpacks to school age children through the Methodist Church in Highland.

Andrew’s biggest accomplishment is “Working hard through High School to be named Salutatorian of the Class of 2020 at Wallkill Senior High School and worked equally as hard to be a contributing member of my community!”

Natalia Garcia-Perez (Principal’s Award) ~ Natalia plans on attending the University at Albany to begin her studies in Political Science. She aspires to achieve a career in law and government.

She is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Student Government Association, Choir (six years) and Cheerleading Team (six years). She is also employed at HMS Host as a cashier.

Her achievements include Academic Achievement and Academic Excellence Awards in both the STEM and Humanities fields, student representative for the Hugh O’Brien Leadership Program, and student representative for the Comprehensive District Education Plan (CDEP).

She volunteers through Our Lady of Fatima Church, the National Honor Society, and the Student Government Association.

Natalia’s biggest accomplishment is “Being a first generation college student!” Ulster BOCES Hudson Valley Pathways Academy

David Mano (Valedictorian) ~ David is a Kingston student who has attended the HVPA and is graduating with a High School Diploma as well as an Associate Degree from SUNY Ulster. He will be continuing his studies at SUNY New Paltz as a History major and plans to go to graduate school. He aspires to be a Historian.

He is a member of the SUNY Ulster Honors Program, the SUNY Ulster Student Government Organization, and the SUNY Ulster History Club.

His achievements include graduating from SUNY Ulster with Honors, was accepted to the SUNY Undergraduate Research Conference, SUNY Ulster President's List (2019 & 2020), SUNY Ulster Student Trustee, Founder of the SUNY Ulster His- tory Club, attended the Student World Affairs Conference, and attended the SUNY Student Assembly as voting delegate in 2019.

He has volunteered his time as an intern for the Erin Collier for Congress Campaign and worked as a SUNY Ulster Campus Connect Leader in 2019.

David’s biggest achievement is serving on the Executive Board of the SUNY Ulster Student Government Organization. As the student representative on the SUNY Ulster Board of Trustees he was a proud and vocal advocate for the rights and benefits of the faculty and staff.

Lauren Anderson (Salutatorian) ~ Lauren is a Kingston student who has attended the HVPA and is graduating with a High School Diploma as well as an Associate Degree from SUNY Ulster. She will be attending SUNY New Paltz to study History focused Liberal Arts and Sciences. She aspires to become a Professor, Lawyer, or Librarian.

She is a member of P-TECH, Club ASL of the Hudson Valley, Environmental Club, and Drama Club.

Her achievements include Student of the Month, Dean’s List, President’s List, Student Ambassador, Ambassador of Hud- son Valley Youth Chorale, opening for the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall, earning her sign name, All County Chorus four years in a row and earning gold in NYSSMA.

She has volunteered her time sewing and selling ribbons for Breast Cancer Awareness, fundraiser for JDRF, LGBTQ+ advocacy, ASPCA donation drives, and Animal Rights advocacy.

Lauren’s biggest achievements is “Starting College at 15 and opening for the Rockettes twice!”

Marysol Calixto (Principal’s Award) ~ Marysol is a Kingston student who has attended the HVPA and is graduating with a High School Diploma as well as an Associate Degree from SUNY Ulster. She will be attending SUNY New Paltz in the Fall and has plans to transfer to Baruch College. She plans to study Business Administration and her goal is to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree and to improve her communication and speaking skills. One day she would like to start her own clothing line business.

Her achievements include TestOut PCPRO Certification, TestOut Network PRO Certification, CISCO IT Essentials PC Hardware and Software Certification, internship at FALA Technologies (2019), and she became a bank teller for the Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union.

She has volunteered her time at the Hodge Center After School Program and the Hudson Valley Foundation For Youth Health Nonprofit Meet Up.

Marysol’s biggest accomplishment is “Completing the six year P-TECH program in five years and earning an Associate of Science in Business Administration from SUNY Ulster!” Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Education

Andrew Westervelt (Valedictorian) ~ Andrew is a Kingston High School student who attends the Electrical Program at the Career & Technical Education Center at Ulster BOCES. He plans to apply for an electrical apprenticeship to study Electrical Construction. His future plan is to earn a Master Electrician License.

He is a member of the Kingston High School Band and SkillsUSA.

His achievements include Valedictorian of the Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Education Center and being a member of the All County Band and the Area All-State Band.

He volunteered his time with Habitat for Humanity and at the High Power Soccer Summer Camp.

Andrew’s biggest accomplishment to date is “Being named the Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Education Center Valedictorian!”

Landon Haight (Salutatorian) ~ Landon is a Highland High School student who attends the CISCO Program at the Career & Technical Education Center. He will be attending Dutchess Community College in the Fall and will begin his studies in Liberal Arts & Humanities. He is undecided about his future plans.

He is a member of the National Honor Society.

His achievements include being named the Salutatorian of the Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Education Center.

Landon’s biggest accomplishment is “Maintaining high grades throughout my school career!”

Kaitlyn Ronk (Principal’s Award) ~ Kaitlyn is a Rondout Valley High School student who attends the Cosmetology Program at the Career & Technical Education Center. Her plans include obtaining her cosmetology license and working in a salon in the area. She aspires to become a stylist for the WWE or a personal stylist.

She is a member of SkillsUSA and the National Technical Honor Society.

Her achievements include receiving the Coach’s Award in Field Hockey (Grades 7-8), Golden Gander Award (Grade 6), 1st Place SkillsUSA Regional Competition in Esthetics (Grade 11), 4th Place SkillsUSA State Competition in Esthetics (Grade 11), National Technical Honor Society, Principal’s Award (Grade 12), Scholastic Achievement Award (Grade 12), and President of SkillsUSA for Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Education Center.

She volunteers her time at her church library.

Kaitlyn’s biggest accomplishment is “Graduating High School and receiving the Principal’s Award and the Scho- lastic Achievement Award!”
