Is Mainstream Pornography Becoming Increasingly Violent and Do Viewers Prefer Violent Content? Eran Shor and Kimberly Seida Department of Sociology, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada It is a common notion among many scholars and pundits that the pornography industry becomes “harder and harder” with every passing year. Some have suggested that porn viewers, who are mostly men, become desensitized to “soft” pornography, and producers are happy to generate videos that are more hard core, resulting in a growing demand for and supply of violent and degrading acts against women in mainstream pornographic videos. We examined this accepted wisdom by utilizing a sample of 269 popular videos uploaded to PornHub over the past decade.

Abstract In order to describe pornography’s harms in the twenty-first century, an age of un- precedented access to Internet technology, some advocates—including activists, re- ligious leaders, politicians, and scientists—use a medical/scientific framework to claim that pornography is biologically addictive. This article examines public dis- course on “pornography addiction” to extend theories of sociology of science and sociology of sexualities about scientific knowledge and the biomedicalization of sex and sexuality. Using content analysis of over 600 documents, including scientific studies, newspaper articles, and state government resolutions, we show how ref- erences to pornography as addictive emerged in the twenty-first century and grew most substantially in the last decade.

  • The Consequences of Sexting Sexting Warrants Help from Parents Being Proactive
The Consequences of Sexting In an effort to connect with peers, some youth begin to send sexually explicit text messages to their friends. They may also send photos that include full or partial nudity. This is called “sexting”. Some teens don’t see it as a big deal but the consequences of sexting may be very significant. Sexting Warrants Help From Parents Sexting often occurs when a boy or girl asks someone else to send them nude or semi-nude photos. Many girls who have sent such pictures say they did so because a boy pressured them. Other times, a girl may volunteer to send sexual images of herself, or even ask a guy to send indecent snaps. The feeling of being wanted or the excitement of exploring sexual curiosities can be very enticing to some teens. Given the consequences of sexting, help from parents is advised. Sexting is damaging for girls and guys. Girls, who should be treated with honor and respect, are instead viewed as objects whose purpose is to provide gratification. They often begin to see themselves in that light. Guys quickly learn lessons about male-female relationships that are unrealistic. This can lead to pornography addiction and relationship failures. Beyond that, transmitting naked pictures of a minor (in most states, a person under 18) legally constitutes child pornography. Many adolescent minors have faced charges for transmitting nude pictures of themselves. Additionally, some teen boys have even faced child pornography charges. One of the consequences of sexting is being placed on sex offender registries for sharing pictures of girlfriends.

  • The Addictive Potential of Sexual Behavior (Impulse) Review2
Page 1 of 9 Impulse: The Premier Journal for Undergraduate Publications in the Neurosciences Submitted for Publication January, 2018 The Addictive Potential of Sexual Behavior Heather Bool D’Youville College, Buffalo, New York This paper examines the addictive potential of sexual behavior through behavioral and neurophysiological mechanisms analogous to other formalized addictions. Sexual behavior refers to any action or thought preformed with the intention of sexual gratification, such as the consumption of explicit material, masturbation, fantasizing of sexual scenarios, and sexual intercourse. Addiction is defined by the presence of tolerance, preoccupation, withdrawal, dependence, and the continuation of behavior despite risk and/or harm. Sexual addiction demonstrates high relapse potential due to the frequency of reward-associated cues encountered in daily life, and the low effort and risk required for sexual pleasure. Currently, sexual addiction lacks a formal diagnosis despite behavioral, psychological, and physiological evidence. An official diagnosis recognized by a governing authority, such as the American Psychological Association, would offer greater access to treatment, funding for research, and exposure and education for the general public about this disorder. SAA was founded in 1977 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Today SAA is an international fellowship with meetings in many countries. Is sex addiction real? This is a common question. We can defi nitely say that for us, sex addiction exists. It’s true that not every person who has an affair, watches pornography, or uses a dating app is a sex addict. We have found most sex addicts experience one or both of these characteristics: once we start we can- not control our behaviors, or when we make up our mind to quit, sooner or later we return to those behaviors. We have also found that sex addiction is progressive, with the behaviors and their consequences usually becoming more severe over time. Examples of addictive sexual behavior • Porn addiction, cyber stalking or sex • Compulsive sexting, using social

SEX ADDICTION AND DIVORCE Cynthia L. Ciancio, Esq., and David A. Lamb, Esq. August 2015 – Family Law Institute 1. Sex Addiction, What is it? Is it Even Real? While there still does not appear to be an official diagnoses of “sex addiction,” it certainly is real, and it is a growing prevalent problem in society. As divorce practitioners, we are experiencing more and more cases driven by an underlying sex addiction by one or both spouses. The degree and severity of the addiction vary widely from case to case. The DSM-IV and V refer to sex addiction as “Hypersexuality” and/or “Sexual Disorders Not Otherwise Specified.” Web MD uses the term “hypersexual disorder (HD).” Other experts have referred to it simply as an “addiction disorder” or a “behavior disorder,” and others refer to sex addiction as being associated with “obsessive compulsive disorder.” One treatment oriented website, The Recovery Ranch, had a concise definition followed by a criteria list as follows1: DSM 5 PROPOSED DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA FOR HYPERSEXUAL DISORDER Over a period of at least 6 months, recurrent and intense sexual fantasies, sexual urges, or sexual behaviors in association with 3 or more of the following 5 criteria: 1 Should Sexual Addiction Be In the DSM-V, http://www.recoveryranch.com/articles/sexual-addiction-hypersexuality-dsm-v/ 1 1. Time consumed by sexual fantasies, urges or behaviors repetitively interferes with other important (non-sexual) goals, activities and obligations. 2. Repetitively engaging in sexual fantasies, urges or behaviors in response to dysphoric mood states (e.g., anxiety, depression, boredom, irritability). 3.

Then, you can log in, go to "My Account" and under "Courses I Need to Take" click on the blue "Enter Answers" button. After completing the post test, you can print your certificate. Topics in Human Sexuality: Sexual Addiction Introduction No study of human sexuality is complete without a discussion of sexual addiction. For most people, sex enhances their quality of life. However, about 6% to 8 % of Americans have sexual problems indicative of an addiction (Ewald, 2003). Sexual compulsivity and sexual anorexia, which Patrick Carnes (2001) describes as “sex in the extremes,” affects all facets of individuals’ lives. Addiction to sexual activities can be as destructive as addiction to chemical substances. Sexual addicts may experience psychological distress, lose their livelihoods, and ruin meaningful relationships. The literature on sexual addiction provides important insights into treating these difficult disorders. There are many facets to treatment, including helping clients to recognize the function of this behavior in order to decrease the tremendous shame around it. Carnes (2001) attributes the etiology of this disorder to a combination of psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral factors. He stresses abstinence, shame reduction, and rebuilding the capacity for healthy intimacy as primary tasks of the first three years of treatment. The following discussion will expand upon these concepts. Educational Objectives 1. Define sexual addiction and the sexual addiction cycle. 2. Define sexual anorexia. 3. Describe prevalence and gender differences in sexual addiction. 4. Discuss the role of trauma in the development of sexual addiction.

RESEARCH SYNTHESIS The Effects of Pornography on Individuals, Marriage, Family, and Community Patrick F. Fagan, Ph.D.1 December 2009 Pornography, as a visual (mis)representation of sexuality, distorts an individual’s concept of sexual relations by objectifying them, which, in turn, alters both sexual attitudes and behavior. It is a major threat to marriage, to family, to children, and to individual happiness. Social scientists, clinical psychologists, and biologists have begun to clarify some of the social and psychological effects of pornography, and neurologists are beginning to delineate the biological mechanisms through which pornography produces its powerful effects on people. Pornography’s power to undermine individual and social functioning is powerful and deep. • Effect on the Mind: Pornography significantly distorts attitudes and perceptions about the nature of sexual intercourse.
