In this philosophical autobiography of her DOI: https://doi.org/10.7202/1013257ar encounters with Hegel, Heidegger, and Derrida, Malabou introduces “plasticity,” suggesting that the more contemporary notion of plasticity supersede Derrida’s proposal of writing as motor scheme. A Conversation with Catherine Malabou
CATHERINE MALABOU University of Paris X-Nanterre NOËLLE VAHANIAN Lebanon Valley College A CONVERSATION WITH CATHERINE MALABOU he questions of the following interview are aimed at introducing Catherine Malabou’s work and philosophical perspective to an audience who may T have never heard of her, or who knows only that she was a student of Derrida. What I hope that this interview reveals, however, is that Malabou “follows” deconstruction in a timely, and also useful way. For one of the common charges levied against deconstruction, at least by American critics, is that by opening texts to infinite interpretations, deconstruction unfortunately does away with more than the master narratives; it mires political agency in identity politics and offers no way out the socio-historical and political constructs of textuality other than the hope anchored in faith at best, but otherwise simply in the will to believe that the stance of openness to the other will let the other become part of the major discourses without thereby marginalizing or homogenizing them. How does Malabou “follow” deconstruction? Indeed, she does not disavow her affiliation with Derrida; she, too, readily acknowledges that there is nothing outside the text. But, by the same token, she also affirms Hegel’s deep influence on her philosophy. From Hegel, she borrows the central concept of her philosophy, namely, the concept of plasticity; the subject is plastic—not elastic, it never springs back into its original form—it is malleable, but it can explode and create itself anew. In this way, there is nothing outside the text, but the text is no less natural than it is cultural, it is no less biological than it is spiritual (or mental), it is no less material than it is historical. -

What do you do that brings feelings of joy and excitement into your life? No matter what your relationship status might be, taking time to relax and have fun is integral to your overall health and happiness. For those in a relationship, time spent together having fun is important in helping to maintain feelings of closeness and connection. With all of the day to day responsibilities and stressors that are a regular part of life, having fun together is a necessary ingredient for a healthy, happy lifestyle. In my experience, couples who aren’t having fun together outside of the bedroom are far less likely to be having fun together inside the bedroom. Frequently, clients come to me for help in their relationships and their reason for seeking treatment is because they no longer feel close, connected, or “happy” with their partner. When I explore what they typically do for fun together, many identify things like: watching TV, reading a book, going out for meals, etc. Those are nice hobbies, and perhaps they are part of one’s much needed daily self-care regimen; however, I question whether or not these things truly bring them a feeling of fun or excitement. Lucky for us, the summer is the perfect time to embark on a new adventure and find new ways to add more fun and excitement to our lives. Whatever your interests may be; whether you’re partnered or single—there is something for everyone. -

By deconstructing the pseudo-opposition between capitalism and socialism, my research demonstrates that, although the country was subject to the unchallenged rules of capital and its accumulation in both domestic and international spheres, Maoist visual culture was intended to veil China’s state capitalism and construct its socialist persona. This historical analysis illustrates the ways in which the Maoist regime recoded and resolved the versatile contradictions of capital in an imaginary socialist utopia. Under these conditions, a wide spectrum of Maoist images played a key role in shaping the public perception of socialism as a reality in everyday lives. -

Box 6313, Santa Barbara, CA. 93160 Email: [email protected] The Pioneers: Biographies of Nudists Leaders Who Made a Difference Lee Baxandall (1935-2008) Founder of the Naturist Society and the Free Beach Movement in America NATURIST SOCIETY FOUNDER LEE BAXANDALL DIES AT 73 November 27, 2008 - The man credited with starting the modern Free Beach Movement in America and founding its national conscience, The Naturist Society, has died after a long illness. Lee Baxandall succumbed Thanksgiving Day after fighting Parkinson’s disease for the past decade. Baxandall began his work as a naturist activist more than 30 years ago. With a background in writing and publishing, Lee's naturist passion led him in 1976 to form the Free Beaches Documentation Center, which he located in his hometown of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Baxandall organized the Naturist Society at Elysium Fields in 1980 after numerous attempts failed to form a “beach committee” inside AANR (landed club owners feared a “free beach” alternative would hurt their membership numbers). To this day, some animosity still exists between old time AANR members and TNS for daring to split the “creditable voice of reason” about nudism into two national organizations. Yet in reality both groups have complimented each other in both focus and expertise, with TNS providing expert legal assistance to persons and clubs trying to establish or maintain the clothing optional status of beaches, rivers, lakes, and other public lands while AANR focused on supporting the 270 private resorts and nudist parks scattered across the country. -

Ugly and Monstrous: Marxist Aesthetics Chris Rasmussen University of Nebraska–Lincoln Abstract An analysis of Marxist conceptions of the good and the beautiful and their relationship to alienation, “Ugly and Monstrous” argues that Marxism was ulti- mately a set of aesthetic beliefs, one that paradoxically called for the temporary cessation of all attempts to create beautiful artwork. Marx understood beauty as Kant had – that it is the result of the harmonization of the faculties that occurs when a disinterested observer encounters a work of art. Capitalism gives to all works (art included) monetary value, and all observers become interested con- sumers, debasing art appreciation and killing the human desire (and need) to experience the beautiful. Th e work of later Marxists, particularly Walter Benjamin and Herbert Mar- cuse, take the Marxist position to its logical conclusion, that any art in the age of capitalist exploitation and worker alienation must, by its nature, be political. -

Note on French Theory Today: An Introduction to Possible Futures by Sarah Resnick The originating conceit: A seminar covering five philoso- phers over five days and titled “French Theory Today: An Introduction to Possible Futures.” Proposed and taught by Alexander R. Galloway through the Public School New York, a self-organizing educational program where class ideas are generated by the public, “French Theory Today” explored a new generation of French voices—Catherine Malabou, Bernard Stiegler, Mehdi Belhaj Kacem, Quentin Meillassoux, and François Laruelle—whose work has, to varying degrees, only recently emerged in the English-speaking world. Each night, the seminar comprised a lecture followed by questions from and discussion with class participants. As Galloway suggests in the online class proposal, the goal was “not to set in aspic a new canon for French philosophy, but to proceed inductively, tracing some recent experiments and possible futures.” This is not to say that these five philosophers comprise any new totality of contemporary French thought, but instead that they provide an opening onto some of its current concerns and interrogations. Nor do they represent a compatible worldview—in fact shared positions among them are few. Nevertheless, over the course of the week a through line came into relief, a set of tendencies that depart from the highly influential French theory of the 1960s and 1970s. Primary among these is the displacement of hermeneutic models centered on the text, a turn away from the realms of discourse, language, subjectivity, and culture, toward materialist and realist possibilities. And in the work of Meillassoux and Laruelle, a still more radical break: the refusal of Kantian correlationism—that is, the assertion that our knowledge of reality is mediated through and marked by the limitations of our rational capacity— inviolable since the mid-eighteenth century.
