Travel Trade Show Booth, Long Beach Saturday January 19, 12 Noon - 5PM This year our annual holiday party was held at The Mandarin Nude at the Getty Museum King Restaurant on Sunday 12/16. Twenty-five people attended on a rainy day in Northridge. Monthly Meet-up Dinner Meetings Tuesday, January 8, 6:45 – 8:30 PM, Van Nuys The meal consisted of appetizers (Chinese Chicken Salad, Egg Monday January 21, 6:45 – 8:30 PM, Pasadena Rolls, and Egg Flower or Hot & Sour Soup) followed by five Wednesday, January 23, 6:45 – 8:30 PM, Torrance main dishes: Sweet & Sour Pork, Moo Goo Gai Pai, Mongolian There is no Meet-up in Ventura or West LA this month. Beef, Shrimp with Lobster Sauce. Mandarin Soft Noodles, and Fried & Steamed Rice. All were delicious. SCNA EVENTS IN FEBRUARY 2013 President Rolf Holbach then welcomed everyone to the party Sunday February 3, Noon - 7:00 PM and gave a short summary of the accomplishments and activities Annual Super Bowl Party/Chili Cook-off, North Hills achieved by SCNA during 2012. He then announced our annual Saturday February 23, 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM award winners: Nude Bowling, Montrose First, 10 Year Membership Certificates were awarded to Joe Monthly Meet-up Dinner Meetings Rubin, Valentina Arizo, and Bob Rubin. Rachel Smith was Tuesday, February 12, 6:45 – 8:30 PM, Van Nuys awarded the “Rubber Chicken Award” for being best potluck Monday February 18, 6:45 – 8:30 PM, Pasadena cook. Jim Carter received the New Member of the Year Award. Wednesday, February 27, 6:45 – 8:30 PM, Torrance He then presented Valentina “Paki” Arizo with the Robin Martin There is no Meet-up in Ventura or West LA this month. Volunteer of the Year Award. The most important Ankh Award was given to Allen Baylis of the Naturist Action Committee who has been extremely helpful to SCNA with legal advice and in our Santa Barbara beaches campaign. Unfortunately Allen could not make the luncheon, so we will give it to him at the Western Gathering this summer. Allen did express his gratitude by phone: “Sometimes you think you are alone sticking your neck out [on the beach and nudity issues] as we so often do. So I am grateful to SCNA for this award and knowing someone out there cares.” Last, Rolf made some Special Presidential Citation Awards to each of the members of the Board for their tireless volunteer work during the year and helping with the transition in leadership from Gary to Rolf. After the awards were all presented, we proceeded to the raffle. President Rolf Holbach welcomes members to annual holiday party. A mechanical talking parrot was the funniest item opened and it exchanged hands several times before Bill Caskie finally got the bird. The other item that was passed around the most was a Starbucks gift card. There were also books, candles, coffee cups, and a dish set exchanged. Everyone walked out with something, which helped make the day a great success. SCNA Newsletter for January 2013 Page 2 of 10 OTHER SCNA NEWS JOHN HARVANCHIK PLACES 4TH IN SENIOR BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIP John Harvanchik came in 4th Place overall in the California State Senior Bowling Association tournament held 11/26/2012 in Modesto, CA. John's high score was 256, with a combined 3-game score of 708 for 3 games (236 average). His 4th place was achieved by combining his scores in the singles, doubles, and team competition with a total 2167 points. The winner scored only 57 more pins than John. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR JANUARY TRADE SHOW BOOTH Rolf and Gary with some of the 500 pounds of donated clothes and dry goods. Fortunately there were no injuries, and the blaze was extinguished in under a half hour. The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but the restaurant is now closed indefinitely for repair. As a result SCNA must cancel its monthly Meetup dinners there (usually the third Thursday of each month) until either the restaurant re-opens, or we can find a suitable replacement spot for our Meetup. SCNA Newsletter for January 2013 Page 3 of 10 OTHER NUDIST NEWS NUDIST REPS MEET WITH SANTA BARBARA COUNTY OFFICIAL ABOUT LOCAL BEACHES 12/5/2012 – Gary Mussell (past SCNA president) and Walt Stephens (AANR-West GAT Chair) had a meeting this afternoon with Eric Friedman, the Exec Assistant to Santa Barbara Supervisor Salud Carbajal, whose First District covers Carpinteria and Bates Beach. Gary, Walt, and Sonya met with him three years ago about re-opening the nude section of Bates Beach, and he expressed support after hearing our presentation about the positive economic impact the beach would have on the south county. Eric gave us a long list of key people in the county to talk to in order to seek their support. This is what we did during the 3 years, and now it was time to report back and take the next step. What do you do that brings feelings of joy and excitement into your life? No matter what your relationship status might be, taking time to relax and have fun is integral to your overall health and happiness. For those in a relationship, time spent together having fun is important in helping to maintain feelings of closeness and connection. With all of the day to day responsibilities and stressors that are a regular part of life, having fun together is a necessary ingredient for a healthy, happy lifestyle. In my experience, couples who aren’t having fun together outside of the bedroom are far less likely to be having fun together inside the bedroom. Frequently, clients come to me for help in their relationships and their reason for seeking treatment is because they no longer feel close, connected, or “happy” with their partner. When I explore what they typically do for fun together, many identify things like: watching TV, reading a book, going out for meals, etc. Those are nice hobbies, and perhaps they are part of one’s much needed daily self-care regimen; however, I question whether or not these things truly bring them a feeling of fun or excitement. Lucky for us, the summer is the perfect time to embark on a new adventure and find new ways to add more fun and excitement to our lives. Whatever your interests may be; whether you’re partnered or single—there is something for everyone.

By deconstructing the pseudo-opposition between capitalism and socialism, my research demonstrates that, although the country was subject to the unchallenged rules of capital and its accumulation in both domestic and international spheres, Maoist visual culture was intended to veil China’s state capitalism and construct its socialist persona. This historical analysis illustrates the ways in which the Maoist regime recoded and resolved the versatile contradictions of capital in an imaginary socialist utopia. Under these conditions, a wide spectrum of Maoist images played a key role in shaping the public perception of socialism as a reality in everyday lives.

Lee Baxandall succumbed Thanksgiving Day after fighting Parkinson’s disease for the past decade. Baxandall began his work as a naturist activist more than 30 years ago. With a background in writing and publishing, Lee's naturist passion led him in 1976 to form the Free Beaches Documentation Center, which he located in his hometown of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Baxandall organized the Naturist Society at Elysium Fields in 1980 after numerous attempts failed to form a “beach committee” inside AANR (landed club owners feared a “free beach” alternative would hurt their membership numbers). To this day, some animosity still exists between old time AANR members and TNS for daring to split the “creditable voice of reason” about nudism into two national organizations. Yet in reality both groups have complimented each other in both focus and expertise, with TNS providing expert legal assistance to persons and clubs trying to establish or maintain the clothing optional status of beaches, rivers, lakes, and other public lands while AANR focused on supporting the 270 private resorts and nudist parks scattered across the country.

Bacher Preface THE UNITED STATES LAGS FAR BEHIND most of the rest of Western Civilization in its negative attitude toward the human body. While most of Europe is comfortable with the concept of nude recreation on beaches and in vacation resorts, here in the U.S., conservative political action groups seek to criminalize even the most innocent exposure of the human body. Often these groups gain support by purporting to defend "family values" or "Christian morality." Although these groups are growing in political power, they represent only a small portion of the American population. And participation in nude recreation is also growing. More and more Americans are discovering the pleasures of skinny-dipping with their families in the local reservoir, or sunbathing in the buff at the local beach. Membership in nudist organizations is growing by leaps and bounds. More than ever, Naturists need powerful arguments to defend their chosen lifestyle against those who cannot see beyond their own misconceptions and preconceived notions. We need evidence and testimony to encourage others to give Naturism a try. For several years, I found myself making claims like these: "Actually, Mom, taking the kids to a nudist park is good for them." "The ideals of Naturism are consistent with the goals of women's rights." "A lot of famous people don't think skinnydipping's such a bad thing." "There's nothing in the Bible that says it's wrong to go nude." "Naturism has some real psychological benefits." "Not everyone in the world thinks nudity is so bad, you know." I knew that these statements were true, but when pressed, I could not back them up with concrete references.

There might be such a thing as nude recreation, but it would not be informed by the community spirit that is central to the naturist ethos. Thus this handbook, a primer for the naturist volunteer. My hope for this booklet is that it live up to its title—Grassroots Naturism: A Guide for the TNS Volunteer. If that goal is met, if this guide proves useful to naturists in the communities in which they live, this undertaking will have been a success. If it is, much of the credit must go to the TNS Member Advisory Board, which offered valuable comment and criticism along the way. As for whatever shortcomings may appear on the following pages, I take full responsibility. I do so, however, with one caveat. I ask that any errors of omission or commission found on these pages be brought to my attention so improvements can be made in future editions.
