Travel Trade Show Booth, Long Beach Saturday January 19, 12 Noon - 5PM This year our annual holiday party was held at The Mandarin Nude at the Getty Museum King Restaurant on Sunday 12/16. Twenty-five people attended on a rainy day in Northridge. Monthly Meet-up Dinner Meetings Tuesday, January 8, 6:45 – 8:30 PM, Van Nuys The meal consisted of appetizers (Chinese Chicken Salad, Egg Monday January 21, 6:45 – 8:30 PM, Pasadena Rolls, and Egg Flower or Hot & Sour Soup) followed by five Wednesday, January 23, 6:45 – 8:30 PM, Torrance main dishes: Sweet & Sour Pork, Moo Goo Gai Pai, Mongolian There is no Meet-up in Ventura or West LA this month. Beef, Shrimp with Lobster Sauce. Mandarin Soft Noodles, and Fried & Steamed Rice. All were delicious. SCNA EVENTS IN FEBRUARY 2013 President Rolf Holbach then welcomed everyone to the party Sunday February 3, Noon - 7:00 PM and gave a short summary of the accomplishments and activities Annual Super Bowl Party/Chili Cook-off, North Hills achieved by SCNA during 2012. He then announced our annual Saturday February 23, 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM award winners: Nude Bowling, Montrose First, 10 Year Membership Certificates were awarded to Joe Monthly Meet-up Dinner Meetings Rubin, Valentina Arizo, and Bob Rubin. Rachel Smith was Tuesday, February 12, 6:45 – 8:30 PM, Van Nuys awarded the “Rubber Chicken Award” for being best potluck Monday February 18, 6:45 – 8:30 PM, Pasadena cook. Jim Carter received the New Member of the Year Award. Wednesday, February 27, 6:45 – 8:30 PM, Torrance He then presented Valentina “Paki” Arizo with the Robin Martin There is no Meet-up in Ventura or West LA this month. Volunteer of the Year Award. The most important Ankh Award was given to Allen Baylis of the Naturist Action Committee who has been extremely helpful to SCNA with legal advice and in our Santa Barbara beaches campaign. Unfortunately Allen could not make the luncheon, so we will give it to him at the Western Gathering this summer. Allen did express his gratitude by phone: “Sometimes you think you are alone sticking your neck out [on the beach and nudity issues] as we so often do. So I am grateful to SCNA for this award and knowing someone out there cares.” Last, Rolf made some Special Presidential Citation Awards to each of the members of the Board for their tireless volunteer work during the year and helping with the transition in leadership from Gary to Rolf. A mechanical talking parrot was the funniest item opened and it exchanged hands several times before Bill Caskie finally got the bird. The other item that was passed around the most was a Starbucks gift card. There were also books, candles, coffee cups, and a dish set exchanged. Everyone walked out with something, which helped make the day a great success. SCNA Newsletter for January 2013 Page 2 of 10 OTHER SCNA NEWS JOHN HARVANCHIK PLACES 4TH IN SENIOR BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIP John Harvanchik came in 4th Place overall in the California State Senior Bowling Association tournament held 11/26/2012 in Modesto, CA. John's high score was 256, with a combined 3-game score of 708 for 3 games (236 average). His 4th place was achieved by combining his scores in the singles, doubles, and team competition with a total 2167 points. The winner scored only 57 more pins than John. The West LA Grill in Santa Monica Blvd, formerly known as Dolores Restaurant and the location of our SCNA monthly Meetups, was struck by flames on Christmas Eve. Fortunately there were no injuries, and the blaze was extinguished in under a half hour. The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but the restaurant is now closed indefinitely for repair. As a result SCNA must cancel its monthly Meetup dinners there (usually the third Thursday of each month) until either the restaurant re-opens, or we can find a suitable replacement spot for our Meetup. SCNA Newsletter for January 2013 Page 3 of 10 OTHER NUDIST NEWS NUDIST REPS MEET WITH SANTA BARBARA COUNTY OFFICIAL ABOUT LOCAL BEACHES 12/5/2012 – Gary Mussell (past SCNA president) and Walt Stephens (AANR-West GAT Chair) had a meeting this afternoon with Eric Friedman, the Exec Assistant to Santa Barbara Supervisor Salud Carbajal, whose First District covers Carpinteria and Bates Beach. Gary, Walt, and Sonya met with him three years ago about re-opening the nude section of Bates Beach, and he expressed support after hearing our presentation about the positive economic impact the beach would have on the south county. Eric gave us a long list of key people in the county to talk to in order to seek their support. This is what we did during the 3 years, and now it was time to report back and take the next step. Attorney Allen Baylis (Naturist Action Committee) was NUDE SUNBATHERS ARE supposed to join us, but he got caught in court this morning in Huntington Beach and couldn’t make the long drive in time for BEACHLESS IN N.J.
