To the women of the 1790s who inspired my research, thank you for your stories, your writings, your material world, and everything you left behind. It has been so rewarding to learn about you and recognize the impact you left on this country. Thank you. III Introduction It was a sunny summer day when I visited one of the last remnants of Federal America in New York City; a yellow and white building, matching porches on each side, and an entrance porch complete with Neoclassical columns. This was the Grange, known to the world as the home of Alexander Hamilton, but best known to me as the home of his wife, Eliza Hamilton. Now run by the National Park Service, it was a home I had visited before, but I was excited to return for a celebration of Eliza’s birthday and what I hoped would be a reinterpretation focused on her life. Eliza spent about thirty years in the Grange, compared to Alexander’s four, yet the interpretation of the home focused on his life, his politics, and his death. The entrance hall was decorated with an enormous portrait of the former Treasury Secretary, nearly taking up an entire wall, and a marble bust of Hamilton by Ceracchi. The parlor was where he retired with his family, ever the doting father, and the dining room held a replica of the silver wine cooler gifted to Alexander by George Washington during the unfolding scandal of the Reynolds Pamphlet. Eliza was an afterthought. Eliza Hamilton lived during a time when women’s lives were becoming increasingly politicized, and America was changing drastically. As the United States government formed, Eliza enabled discussion in her parlor, hosting receptions where she led conversations on congressional debates. Her dining room was a place where she helped to form American identity through food choices and decorative styles, visually communicating classical motifs. In the privacy of her bedroom, her close relationships further enmeshed her in the political world, connecting her to an infamous Federalist leader as well as a beloved First Lady. She was never 1 fully cloistered away in the Grange, however, and walked the streets of New York City, the United States capitol between 1789 and 1790, to attend politically driven performances in theatres or engage with sessions of Congress. Her political activity can be traced through the various spaces she inhabited, best of all at her home at the Grange. I started my research with two ideas; women of all classes were political actors in the 1790s United States, and the spaces they inhabited and navigated through were vitally important to understanding their political work. Though I have found documentary sources illustrating women’s political beliefs, feminine words from the eighteenth century are less privileged than those of men. Additional details about the experience of women can be reconstructed, however, through non-traditional sources, namely material culture, to match the non-traditional avenues they used to express themselves.     Key Facts about Kenmore, Ferry Farm, and the Washington and Lewis families. The George Washington Foundation The Foundation owns and operates Ferry Farm and Historic Kenmore. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Foundation (then known as the Kenmore Association) was formed in 1922 in order to purchase Kenmore. The Foundation purchased Ferry Farm in 1996. Historic Kenmore Kenmore was built by Fielding Lewis and his wife, Betty Washington Lewis (George Washington’s sister). Fielding Lewis was a wealthy merchant, planter, and prominent member of the gentry in Fredericksburg. Construction of Kenmore started in 1769 and the family moved into their new home in the fall of 1775. Fielding Lewis' Fredericksburg plantation was once 1,270 acres in size. Today, the house sits on just one city block (approximately 3 acres). Kenmore is noted for its eighteenth-century, decorative plasterwork ceilings, created by a craftsman identified only as "The Stucco Man." In Fielding Lewis' time, the major crops on the plantation were corn and wheat. Fielding was not a major tobacco producer. When Fielding died in 1781, the property was willed to Fielding's first-born son, John. Betty remained on the plantation for another 14 years. The name "Kenmore" was first used by Samuel Gordon, who purchased the house and 200 acres in 1819. Kenmore was directly in the line of fire between opposing forces in the Battle of Fredericksburg in 1862 during the Civil War and took at least seven cannonball hits. Kenmore was used as a field hospital for approximately three weeks during the Civil War Battle of the Wilderness in 1864.

    'DEPRIVED OF THEIR LIBERTY': ENEMY PRISONERS AND THE CULTURE OF WAR IN REVOLUTIONARY AMERICA, 1775-1783 by Trenton Cole Jones A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland June, 2014 © 2014 Trenton Cole Jones All Rights Reserved Abstract Deprived of Their Liberty explores Americans' changing conceptions of legitimate wartime violence by analyzing how the revolutionaries treated their captured enemies, and by asking what their treatment can tell us about the American Revolution more broadly. I suggest that at the commencement of conflict, the revolutionary leadership sought to contain the violence of war according to the prevailing customs of warfare in Europe. These rules of war—or to phrase it differently, the cultural norms of war— emphasized restricting the violence of war to the battlefield and treating enemy prisoners humanely. Only six years later, however, captured British soldiers and seamen, as well as civilian loyalists, languished on board noisome prison ships in Massachusetts and New York, in the lead mines of Connecticut, the jails of Pennsylvania, and the camps of Virginia and Maryland, where they were deprived of their liberty and often their lives by the very government purporting to defend those inalienable rights. My dissertation explores this curious, and heretofore largely unrecognized, transformation in the revolutionaries' conduct of war by looking at the experience of captivity in American hands. Throughout the dissertation, I suggest three principal factors to account for the escalation of violence during the war. From the onset of hostilities, the revolutionaries encountered an obstinate enemy that denied them the status of legitimate combatants, labeling them as rebels and traitors.

    CAMPBELL, THERESA J., Ph.D. Political Friendship in Early America. (2010) Directed by Dr. Robert M. Calhoon. 250 pp. During the turbulent decades that encompassed the transition of the North American colonies into a Republic, America became the setting for a transformation in the context of political friendship. Traditionally the alliances established between elite, white, Protestant males have been most studied. These former studies provide the foundation for this work to examine the inclusion of ―others‖ -- political relationships formed with and by women, persons of diverse ethnicities and races, and numerous religious persuasions -- in political activity. From the outset this analysis demonstrates the establishment of an uniquely American concept of political friendship theory which embraced ideologies and rationalism. Perhaps most importantly, the work presents criteria for determining early American political friendship apart from other relationships. The central key in producing this manuscript was creating and applying the criteria for identifying political alliances. This study incorporates a cross-discipline approach, including philosophy, psychology, literature, religion, and political science with history to hone a conception of political friendship as understood by the Founding Generation. The arguments are supported by case studies drawn from a wide variety of primary documents. The result is a fresh perspective and a new approach for the study of eighteenth century American history. [FILM 380] Alexander, William (1726-1783). Selected papers, 1767-1782. 1 reel. William Alexander, also known as “Lord Sterling,” first served as colonel of the 1st NJ Regiment. In 1776 he was appointed brigadier general and took command of the defense of New York City as well as serving as an advisor to General Washington. He was promoted to major- general in 1777. Papers consist of correspondence, military orders and reports, and bulletins to the Continental Congress. Originals are in the New York Historical Society.
