Donin DATE: February 12 and 24, 2009 PLACE: Hanover, NH DONIN: All right, so today is Thursday, February 12, 2009. My name is Mary Donin and we are in Rauner Library with Edward M. Bradley—Professor Edward M. Bradley. Professor emeritus, I guess I should say. That was as of 2006 that you became emeritus? BRADLEY: 2006. Yes. DONIN: I guess weʼd like to start out, Professor Bradley, hearing about how it is you ended up coming to Dartmouth back in—I think it was 1963? BRADLEY: Yes. DONIN: Did you find Dartmouth or did Dartmouth find you? BRADLEY: Dartmouth found me. Dartmouth found me initially, I think, at the annual meeting of the Classical Association of New England in Lakeville, Connecticut. This must have been in the spring of 1962, where I met Norman [A.] Doenges and I was at that time working on my doctoral thesis and trying to find gainful employment. -

Aiken, 1865-1866 Edwin David Sanborn, 1866-1874 Louis Pollens, 1878-1886 Marvin Davis Bisbee, 1886-1910 Nathaniel Goodrich, 1911-1950 Richard Morin, 1950-1968 Edward Lathem, 1968 - 1978 Margaret Otto, 1979 -2000 Richard Lucier, 2001- 1770 - Eleazar Wheelock brings his library to Hanover, mostly religious tracts, Bibles, and primers, approximately 300 volumes he had assembled, or received as donations from supporters in England and Scotland for his work in Moors Indian Charity School. 1773 - The library is housed at Bezaleel Woodward's house, and he is appointed librarian. 1774 - While visiting for Commencement, Jeremy Belknap records in his diary: "The College Library is kept at Mr. Woodward's. It is not large, but there are some very good books in it." 1777 - The library is moved to a College building. 1 1779 - John Smith appointed librarian. Use of the library restricted to officers and students of the College, and resident graduates. The availability of the collection is limited: 1 - 2 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. 1783 - Library relocated to President Wheelock's house. Society of Social Friends founded. 1786 - United Fraternity founded The two literary societies maintain their own libraries, volumes of more practical use than the College library, and with significantly more availability to undergraduate members. For many years, the literary societies' libraries would be the primary source of books for students and faculty alike. -

North © Columbia's Legacy: Friends and Enemies in the New Nation Conference at Columbia University and The New-York Historical Society, Dec. 10, 2004 Sarah Jay wrote her husband [Oct. 1801]: "I have been rendered very happy by the company of our dear children . I often, I shd. say daily, bless God for giving us such amiable Children. May they long be preserved a blessing to us & to the community." Who were these 'amiable' children, and what were they like? The happy marriage of John and Sarah Jay produced six children: Peter Augustus, born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, in 1776; Susan, born and died in Madrid after only a few weeks of life, in 1780; Maria, born in Madrid in 1782; Ann, born in Paris in 1783, William and Sarah Louisa, born in NYC in 1789 and 1792 respectively. As you can see by the birthplaces of these children, their parents played active parts on the stage of independence, doing what needed to be done, wherever it needed to be done, at the end of a colonial era and the birth of a new nation. John Jay held a greater variety of posts than any other Founding Father, posts he insisted he did not seek but felt it his duty to his country to assume. Sarah Livingston Jay, brought up in a political household, was a strong support to her husband, astutely networking with the movers and shakers of the time (as a look at her Invitation Lists of 1787–1788 shows). -

1 LEARNING TO SEE A TRANSLINGUAL PAST Consciousness is reflected in a word as the sun in a drop of water. A word relates to consciousness as a living cell relates to a whole organ- ism, as an atom relates to the universe. A word is a microcosm of human consciousness. L.S. Vygotsky, “Thought and Word” L. S. VYGOTSKY AND M. NOURBESE PHILIP SUGGEST THAT words— even a single word— lie at the center of memory, like atoms to a uni- verse. Words, it is often said, are what make the United States exceptional: it was the first modern nation to be founded by virtue of written documents rather than evolving history. These documents contain the words that Amer- icans cling to: “truth,” “happiness,” “self- evident,” “created equal,” “We the people.” They are words subject, necessarily, to both the initial and ongoing work of democracy. They are invoked, argued over, lamented, deconstructed, cried about, revered, worshiped, cursed, rejected, doubted, prayed over, and entrusted with faith. They are used to bring people in and to shut people out. But there is something about these words that has not often been considered, a fact about them so obvious that it seems strange to notice: these words are in English. What if we imagined a United States of America not in English? What words would we discover that are also a part of the founding of the country? How would these words change our memory, our understanding, of what was going on when the country was founded, and thus our understanding of what has been since then? Economic factors greatly influenced accelerating departure rates through the 1860s and 1870s. The fates of only a tiny proportion of those who left can be sketched without knowing whether they were exceptional or the norm. McSally Abstract: Women have voluntarily served to defend America since the birth of our nation, often driven by necessity or the ½ght for equal opportunity, but always limited by law or policy grounded in accepted gender roles and norms. Today, women compose 14 percent of the total active-duty military, and more than 255,000 have deployed to combat operations in Iraq or Afghanistan. Despite their exemplary ser- vice and performance in combat, women are still restricted from serving in more than 220,000 military positions solely because of their sex. Women also continue to be exempt from the Selective Service System, for which their male counterparts are required by law to register. Are these continued inconsistencies be- tween the sexes in the area of national defense incongruent with democratic tenets? Have we gone too far or not far enough in allowing or compelling women to defend the nation if required?
