It focusses on a single province – Alberta – and utilizes an inter-disciplinary approach to understand how the interaction between the biological and the psychosocial conditions of the schools contributed to both immediate and chronic health problems for Aboriginal students. Through an examination of nutrition, sanitation, disease, healthcare interventions, and mental health in the schools, it is seen that any “progress” the Department made in regards to the health of students was circular. -

Olive Dickason
Dickason first became aware of her Métis ancestry as a young adult upon meeting some Métis relatives in Regina. Honouring her ancestors properly became a goal that would give her future academic work the deepest personal meaning. But before that, she entered the workforce. She began a 24-year career in journalism at the Regina Leader-Post and subsequently, worked as a writer and editor at The Winnipeg Free Press, The Montreal Gazette, and The Globe and Mail. She pro- moted coverage of First Nations and Women’s issues, becoming the Women’s Editor at both The Montreal Gazette, and later The Globe and Mail’s daily newspaper and magazine. At age 50, Dickason decided to continue her education, entering the Graduate program at the University of Ottawa. She had to struggle with faculty preconceptions regarding Aboriginal History – including arguments that it did not exist – before finally finding a professor to act as her academic advisor. Dickason completed her Master’s degree at the Olive Patricia Dickason University of Ottawa in 1972, at the age of 52. She Honorary Doctor of Letters went on to successfully defend her Doctoral Thesis, entitled The Myth of the Savage. Born in Winnipeg, Olive Dickason is widely Dickason then authored Canada’s First Nations: acknowledged as the key figure in making A History of Founding Peoples from the Earliest Times, Aboriginal History serious study in Canada’s the most definitive text on the subject at the time, academic world. and still widely in use. Introduction Since Time Immemorial, Human Beings Have Used Narrative
Chapter 1 – Introduction Since time immemorial, human beings have used narrative to help us make sense of our experience of life. From the fireside to the theatre, from the television and silver screen to the more recent manifestations of the virtual world, we have used storytelling as a means of providing structure, order, and coherence to what can otherwise appear an overwhelming infinity of random, unrelated events. In ordering the perceived chaos of the world around us into a structure we can grasp, narrative provides insight and understanding not only of events themselves, but on a more fundamental level, of the very essence of what it means to live as a human being. As the primary means by which historical writing is organized, narrative has attracted a large body of historians and philosophers who have grappled with its impact on our understanding of the past. Underlying their work is the tension between historical writing as a reflection of what took place in the past, and the essence of narrative as a creative, imaginative act. The very structure of Aristotelian narrative, with its causal link between events, its clearly defined beginning, middle and end, its promise of catharsis, its theme or moral, reflects an act of imagination on the part of its author. While an effective narrative first and foremost strives to draw us into its world of story and keep us there until the ending, the primary goal of historical writing, in theory at least, is to increase our understanding about the past. While these two goals are not inherently incompatible, they do not always work in concert. -

We conducted multi-level analyses of 327 Turkish-heritage ethnic Disruptive behavior minority early-adolescents in Germany (62 classrooms; Mage = 11.59 years, SDage = 0.76). Higher rates of PED Ethnic minority children were associated with more depressive symptoms and disruptive behaviors and lower general life sa- Perceived ethnic discrimination tisfaction—though these effects differed by gender. Unexpectedly, cross-ethnic friendships with ethnic majority Socioemotional adjustment peers exacerbated the negative effects of PED on socioemotional adjustment. This effect was decreased, though, when adolescents perceived the classroom climate to be supportive of intergroup contact toward majority- minority cross-ethnic friendships. Supportive classroom climate also buffered the effects of PED for youth with minority cross-ethnic friends. -
